Parroquia de Alcoy | Santa Maria | Church interior | The Parish Church of Santa María de Alcoy is situated in the historic centre of Alcoy, in the Plaza de España. Neoclassical in style and built in the 18th century, its origins date back to the 13th century. The main façade is imposing and stands out for its neoclassical style with columns and pilasters, with two symmetrical bell towers flanking the façade. A large central rose window allows natural light to enter. There is a central dome over the transept, as well as side chapels between the buttresses. Its sober decoration is typical neoclassical, while its high altarpiece is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The church suffered major damage during the Spanish Civil War and had to be partially rebuilt. It is one of the most significant religious buildings in Alcoy and is still the centre of many religious and cultural celebrations in the city, including the famous Moors and Christians festivities.

Jaisalmer, nicknamed "The Golden city", is a town in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is located 575 kilometres west of the state capital Jaipur. It was once known as Jaisalmer state.

Jaisalmer is named after its founder Maharawal Jaisal Singh, a Rajput king in 1156 AD. "Jaisalmer" means "the Hill Fort of Jaisal". Jaisalmer is sometimes called the "Golden City of India" because the yellow sand and the yellow sandstone used in every architecture of the city gives a yellowish-golden tinge to the city and its surrounding area.

The town stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone, crowned by a fort, which contains the palace and several ornate Jain temples. Many of the houses and temples are finely sculptured. It lies in the heart of the Thar Desert (great Indian desert) and has a population of about 78,000. It is the administrative headquarters of Jaisalmer District.

The sound end of the Gramophone had me thinking a Hummingbird might mistake it for a flower. Such ornate hand crafted work is rarely seen today.

Velvet striped grasshoppers, Eritettix simplex, are widespread in North America. This youngster (note the tiny wings) was out early in March, basking on a warm afternoon, dreading the cold night that would render it immobile.

Utetheisa ornatrix (Ornate bella moth / Polilla Florida)

The ornate bella moth, Utetheisa ornatrix (Linnaeus), is one of our most beautiful moths. Unlike most moths, which are nocturnal, the Ornate bella moth is diurnal and flies readily when disturbed. Therefore, it is more commonly seen than nocturnal species of moths by the public.

The Ornate bella moth is found from Connecticut westward to southeastern Nebraska, and southward to New Mexico, southeastern Arizona and Florida. It is also found through Mexico and southward through Central and South America all the way to Argentina and throughout most of the Antilles. In the U.S., it is more common in the southern part of its range.

The hotel we stayed in on Borneo was partially chosen on account of the abundance of nature to be found within its grounds. I didn't take my golf gear but the hotel had a superb course set within many acres of lush surroundings. What this meant was that if I was prepared to venture out before the golfers there was all manner of wildlife to be seen and photographed.

So after a 05.00am rise we took a guided dawn walk around part of the course.

The subject here is an Ornate Backed Sunbird which is seen feeding in a similar manner to a hummingbird. A quick check of the cameras EXIF data will show the lack of light that was available at that early hour.

Just another #macro Monday. When I went out this weekend I knew the wildlife would be limited due to the time of year and heat so I decided to focus on macro subjects.

Bukit Batok Nature Park, Singapore. Twice a year, the yellow saraca blooms there attract birds such as this male Olive-backed Sunbird to feed on the sweet nectar and dance amongst the flowers.
