Murano glass paper weights

 

Murano glass is glass made on the Venetian island of Murano, which has specialized in fancy glasswares for centuries. Murano’s glassmakers led Europe for centuries, developing or refining many technologies including crystalline glass, enamelled glass (smalto), glass with threads of gold (aventurine), multicolored glass (millefiori), milk glass (lattimo), and imitation gemstones made of glass. Today, the artisans of Murano are still employing these centuries-old techniques, crafting everything from contemporary art glass and glass figurines to Murano glass chandeliers and wine stoppers, as well as tourist souvenirs.

 

Today, Murano is home to a vast number of factories and a few individual artists' studios making all manner of glass objects from mass marketed stemware to original sculpture. The Museo del Vetro (Glass Museum) in the Palazzo Giustinian houses displays on the history of glassmaking as well as glass samples ranging from Egyptian times through the present day.

Located 1.5 km (0.93 mi) from the main city Venice, Italy, Murano has been a commercial port since as far back as the 7th century. It is believed that glassmaking in Murano originated in 8th-century Rome, with significant Asian and Muslim influences, as Venice was a major trading port[citation needed]. Murano glass is similar to the 1st-century BC Greek glasses found in the shipwreck of Antikythera[citation needed]. Murano’s reputation as a center for glassmaking was born when the Venetian Republic, fearing fire and destruction of the city’s mostly wooden buildings, ordered glassmakers to move their foundries to Murano in 1291. Murano glass is the largest proportion of Venetian glass.

 

Murano's glassmakers were soon the island’s most prominent citizens. By the 14th century, glassmakers were allowed to wear swords, enjoyed immunity from prosecution by the Venetian state, and their daughters permitted to marry into Venice’s most affluent families. Marriage between glass master and the daughter of the nobleman wasn't regarded as misalliance. However glassmakers were not allowed to leave the Republic. Exportation of professional secret was punished by death. Many craftsmen took this risk and set up glass furnaces in surrounding cities and as far afield as England and the Netherlands. By the end of the 16th century, three thousand of Murano island's seven thousand inhabitants were involved in some way in the glassmaking industry. French revolutionary armies occupied Murano in 1797.

 

Murano glass was produced in great quantities in the 1950s and 1960s for export and for tourists.

 

Murano glass chandeliers

 

In the 18th century Murano glassmakers started to introduce new products such as glass mirrors and chandeliers to their production. In history these glass chandeliers became popular after the iron, wood and brass era of chandeliers, and they were such a success that instantly brought chandeliers to a new dimension. The first Murano glass chandeliers to be produced by Venetian glassmakers date back around the year 1700. This new type of chandelier was called "ciocca", literally bouquet of flowers, for the characteristic decorations of glazed polychrome flowers. The most sumptuous of them consisted of a metal frame covered with small elements in blown glass, transparent or colored, with decorations of flowers, fruits and leaves, while simpler model had arms made with a unique piece of glass. Their shape was inspired by an original architectural concept: the space on the inside is left almost empty since decorations are spread all around the central support, distanced from it by the length of the arms. One of the common use of the huge Murano Chandeliers was the interior lighting of theatres and rooms in important palaces.

 

Giuseppe Briati was the most famous producer of these chandeliers. He focused his work on the creation of what are now recognised as the typical Murano chandeliers with multiple arms decorated with garlands, flowers and leaves, called "ciocche". Born on the island of Murano in 1686 from a family of glassmakers he apparently had the chance to work in a Bohemian glass factory, where he learned the secrets of working the crystal, that at the time was taking over venetian glass leadership on the European market. Briati contributed significantly to improve the fortunes of the Venetian glass, which after having experienced a period of success, was heavily decayed. His furnace became famous for the production of Bohemian inspired glass with a twist of eccentricity, that through colors and decorations gave them the look of triumph of polychrome flowers. Giuseppe Briati created what it's now called Rezzonico Chandelier, whose name derive from the first chandelier of its kind, that represents the classic Murano chandelier. It was designed by Briati for the noble venetian family Rezzonico and hung in their palace along the Grand Canal, now famed venetian museum under the name "Ca' Rezzonico". This kind of chandelier, completely realized by hand, required a particular working by the glassmakers due to the arms being formed by many small pieces of glass. Every shape of glass had to be masterly executed because any outsize piece wouldn't fit to be mounted between the others. Rezzonico chandelier is an example of the ability of the Italian craftmanship to adapt to changes and to offer new and innovative solutions to the mutation of architectural needs.

 

Murano glass chandeliers have a unique history and continue to be produced in Venice today, thanks to the success that makes them one of Venetian glass best-known and most appreciated products. These pretty and joyful glass chandeliers that became popular after the iron, wood and brass era of chandeliers, instantly brings a new dimension of fun and fashion to the idea of chandelier. Today they are widely appreciated as one of the most beautiful and decorative types of chandelier.

Conditioned by the gusto of recovery and revival which had decreed the nineteenth century re-launching, modern glass-making on Murano was born relatively late on, that is, in the first years of the century while it gave original results only in the second decade at the time when the great foreign Art Nouveau glass-makers had already given their best works.

 

In the first twenty years of this century the glass of modern style was produced at Murano quite discontinuously, for the most part on the occasion of the Venice Biennale exhibitions and of the Fondazione Bevilacqua la Masa at Ca’ Pesaro. Only in the immediate post-war period did the factories begin a normal production of non-traditional models which often constituted the development of attempts made in previous years. In the 1920s Muranese glass-making positively felt the changes which had taken place in the international artistic world to a greater extent than had been the case in the pre-war period. In the 1930s and 1940s we have the happy union to Art Deco, with its preciosity and decorative fancies. The handicraft of production which will continue to characterize the Muranese glass-works in the 30’s and 40’s in such a way that at the dour Biennale of 1942, invaded by praise of war, the Murano glass constituted a vivacious and almost anachronistic note. Having come out from the nightmare of the dictatorship and the war, those who operated in the interior decorating sector took up activity once again with enthusiasm, nevertheless showing themselves divided between the desire to renew themselves on the bases of rationalist principles and the continuous and inevitable reference to the experiences of the 1930s.

 

The modern furniture market was covered almost completely by Swedish production for the whole of the 1950s. The rationalists produced furnishing objects which were practical and simple, even programmatically modest. The rationalist instances were generally ignored in Murano, while the attempt was made to stylistically renew the product. In this way the glass-makers, exploiting traditional manual techniques, shaped vases in elementary forms, often square, in bright and provocative colors, with schematic motifs, sometimes geometrical whilst others were inspired by abstract painting. This was an exasperated and provocative affirmation of modernity which, shortly after, would be resolved in more meditated ways.

Some of Murano's historical glass factories remain well known brands today, amongst them De Biasi, Gabbiani, Venini, Salviati, Barovier & Toso, Pauly, Berengo Studio, Seguso, Formia International, Simone Cenedese, Alessandro Mandruzzato, Vetreria Ducale, Estevan Rossetto 1950 and many others. The oldest glass factory is Antica Vetreria Fratelli Toso, founded in 1854.

Overall, the industry has been shrinking as demand has waned. Imitation works (easily recognizable by experts but not by the common client) from Asia and Eastern Europe take an estimated 40% - 45% of the market for Murano glass, and public tastes have changed while the designs in Murano have largely stayed the same. Due to these factors, as well as the difficult and low-paying nature of the work, the number of professional glassmakers in Murano has decreased from about 6000 in 1990 to fewer than 1000 today.

 

In an effort to curb imitations, a collection of companies and concerned individuals in Murano created a trademark to certify authenticity. Today about 50 companies use the Artistic Glass Murano® trademark of origin.[6] The trademark was introduced by and continues to be regulated by Region of Veneto Law no.70 of the 23/12/1994. Factories on the island are not required to apply for the trademark and many choose not to, but if a work carries the trademark, its authenticity is guaranteed.

 

Materials

 

The other raw materials, called flux or melting agents, soften at lower temperatures. The more sodium oxide present in the glass, the slower it solidifies. This is important for hand-working because it allows the glassmaker more time to shape the material. The various raw materials that an artisan might add to a glass mixture are sodium (to make the glass surface opaque), nitrate and arsenic (to eliminate bubbles) and coloring or opacifying substances.

Colors, techniques and materials

 

The Murano glass is made up of 70% silica sand, added to a 30% of other substances called “fluxes” and "stabilizers" (soda and lime). These added “fluxes” allows the glass to be melted at a lower temperature, and the "stabilizers" prevent the glass's solubility in water. When the glass melts at a lower temperature, it is possible to create homogeneous and bubble free Murano glass. The Murano glass in its basic composition is colorless. The colors are obtained by adding small amounts of minerals, oxides, and chemical derivatives to the base composition of the glass powder. This is the Murano magic that creates infinite combinations of transparent colors, crayons and alabasters.

 

Colors, techniques and materials vary depending upon the look a glassmaker is trying to achieve. Aquamarine is created through the use of copper and cobalt compounds, whereas ruby red uses a gold solution as a coloring agent.

 

Murrine technique begins with the layering of colored liquid glass, which is then stretched into long rods called canes (see caneworking). When cold, these canes are then sliced in cross-section, which reveals the layered pattern. The better-known term "millefiori" is a style of murrine that is defined by each layer of molten color being molded into a star, then cooled and layered again. When sliced, this type of murrine has the appearance of many flowers, thus mille- (thousand) fiori (flowers).

 

Filigree (a type of caneworking), glass engraving, gold engraving, incalmo, lattimo, painted enamel, ribbed glass and submersion are just a few of the other techniques a glassmaker can employ.

 

Sommerso

 

Sommerso (lit. "submerged" in Italian), or "sunken glasses", is a form of artistic Murano glass that has layers of contrasting colors (typically two), which are formed by dipping a gather of colored glass into another molten glass and then blowing the gather into the desired shape; the outermost layer, or casing, is often clear. Sommerso was developed in Murano during the late thirties and was made popular by Seguso d'Arte in the fifties. This process is a popular technique for vases, and is sometimes used for sculptures.

 

Tools

 

Special tools are essential for Murano artisans to make their glass. Some of these tools include borselle (tongs or pliers used to hand-form the red-hot glass), canna da soffio (blowing pipe), pontello (an iron rod to which the craftsman attaches the object after blowing in order to add final touches), scagno (the glass-master's workbench) and tagianti (large glass-cutting clippers). The tools for glass-blowing have changed little over the centuries and remain simple. An old Murano saying goes "Good tools are nice, but good hands are better," reinforcing the artistic nature of the glass-making process, which relies on the skill of the worker rather than the use of special tools.

In The Sopranos episode, "A Hit Is a Hit", Tony Soprano's neighbor, Jean Cusimano, hosts a dinner party, at which she comments about the Soprano home: "Oh, but that bar with the goombah[disambiguation needed] Murano glass". Dinner party guest (and Tony's psychiatrist), Dr. Jennifer Melfi, responds: "I like Murano glass". This exchange occurred in the context of a larger conversation that addressed the blurred distinctions amongst various socio-economic classes of Italian-Americans and between gangsters and successful professionals.

Nearing the end of it's 2.5 journey across the country, this train originated in Perth on Australia's west coast and is seen about an hour away from it's destination of SCT Logistics depot in Laverton, Melbourne.

 

Seen here hauling 26 wagons, it is a relatively small load compared to the majority of SCT's trains which operate on this route with around 50-80 wagons.

 

Departing Perth on a Tuesday night, this service has been added to SCT's weekly schedule from early in 2018, in part due to picking up extra loading since the recent demise of the Aurizon company operating their intermodal freights on this route.

The Gravensteen is a castle in Ghent originating from the Middle Ages. The name means "castle of the counts" in Dutch.[1] The Gravensteen is situated at an altitude of 9 meters.

History[edit]

The present castle was built in 1180 by count Philip of Alsace [2] and was modeled after the crusaders castles that Philip of Alsace encountered while he participated in the second crusade. Before its construction, there stood a wooden castle on the same location, presumably built in the ninth century. The castle served as the seat of the Counts of Flanders until they abandoned it in the 14th century. The castle was then used as a courthouse, a prison and eventually decayed. Houses were built against the walls and even on the courtyard and the stones of the walls were used to erect other buildings. At one time it even served as a factory. At the end of the 19th century, the castle was scheduled to be demolished.

Renovation

In 1885 the city of Ghent bought the castle and started a renovation project. The newly built houses were removed and the walls and keep were restored to their original condition.

 

The castle has been repaired enough to allow people to travel through it and climb on top. It is still partly surrounded by the moat. Inside is a museum with various torture devices (and a guillotine) that were historically used in Ghent.

Referring to him as a God who is able to response to the calls of the people, bring rain when drought is prevailing, clear up the sky when rainy, in order to protect abundant grain to sufficiently satisfy the people need. The City God also acts a local officer of hell by administering the underworld affairs of that locality and all things that people fails to reach. People believe him to possess the power to punish and appease the evil spirits. Taoist priests performing rite to reach the underworld to release a soul of a newly deceased from purgatory have to notify the City God by way of a "City God official document" in order to be able to arrest and escort the soul of the newly deceased to the altar. In a word, the scope of duty of City God is closely related with the life of the common people and it seems that the common people, believes in the City Gods ability to protect their livelihood and live, brings many material benefits and utilities. So, the belief in City God just becomes widely popular and a religious activity of the common people with energetic influence.

The wild apple tree or European wild apple tree, or simply crab apple is one of the species of the genus Malus originating in central Europe. Its scientific name means "apple of the forest". In the past it was thought to be an important ancestor of the cultivated apple (Malus domestica), however it is now known to come mainly from the Central Asian species Malus sieversii. On the other hand, recent genetic studies confirm that M. sylvestris has contributed in a secondary, but significant way, to the genome of the cultivated apple tree.

On this day however a local job brought a solid block of Bellevues up from Maumee and a road crew was put on at Sumner St yard with a 344 symbol. It took them most of the afternoon before they finally got out at 287 which placed them right at sunset at Vickers but catching one of the remaining 5 high hood SD40's leading a road freight on the Chicago main was well worth a shot. 12/16/17

The Wendigo is a legendary creature which originates from Native American folklore, specifically the Algonquin speaking peoples from Canada and the north eastern part of the US today. It is described as a tall, emaciated creature, with deep eye sockets and greyish skin that has an ever lasting hunger for human flesh. The antlers seen in most popular depictions have no basis in Native American folklore and are just a Hollywood addition. The Wendigos are malevolent creatures born out of human greed and cannibalism. These creatures prefer to prey on people alone in the vast wilderness of North America.

 

The legend itself emerged as a way to preserve social cohesion in order to survive the harsh winters of North America. The legend has a strong emphasis on working together to survive as if one person decided to be greedy and hoard food, it could jeopardize the survival of the tribe.

  

I finally got around to using one of my monsters in a scene. It was an idea I thought of a while ago after watching Monster Quest and Lost Tapes. The shows themselves are kind of goofy, but they're fun to watch. I hope you guys enjoy!

On the road from Toledo to Granada, and possibly originating from a small Arab castle located by some historians in what is now the hermitage of San Juan, the town of Almagro was born - a city since 1796 - shortly after the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, which took place in 1212, and was granted a charter by Friar Gonzalo Yáñez de Noboa, IX Master of the Order of Calatrava, which was confirmed in 1222 by King Ferdinand III the Saint. The capital of the Calatrava family and of what was later called Campo de Calatrava, it soon became so popular that King Alfonso X the Wise convened the Cortes there in 1273.

 

The medieval square underwent a notable transformation during the 16th century, coinciding with the arrival in Almagro of the Fúcars - the Castilianisation of the Flemish surname Fugger -, bankers subject to the Emperor Charles V, who had been leased the Almadén quicksilver mines as a privilege for their financial support of the family bank during the wars in Europe. New buildings were built in the square and it is to them that we owe the influence of the glass galleries, with northern reminders, which ennoble and give a unique appearance to the two largest sides of this Plaza Mayor of Almagro, the name by which it has traditionally been known, although at different times it has received other names such as the Constitution, the Republic, the Royal or Spain, after the last Civil War. In the 1960s, restoration work began and was completed in 1967, as shown on a plaque placed on the Town Hall building. The work, directed by the architect Francisco Pons-Sorolla, restored the unique complex to its 16th-century nobility and splendour.

 

With an irregular rectangular floor plan, one of its larger sides opens onto the part corresponding to the Maestral Palace, and according to old plans it is 125 yards long by 44 wide, that is, approximately 104.5 by 37 metres.

 

The greatest uniqueness of this square is centred on its larger sides, where a harmonious group of houses stands, arranged on two-story arcades, supported by eighty-five Tuscan stone columns, on which rest the thick wooden foundations and beams painted in red ochre. These buildings made of modest materials have their greatest originality in the double-storey glass gallery, which provides a characteristic flavour and notable originality to the whole, as it is a unique case of Castilian architecture. These galleries were initially open, were public and were used to watch the shows that took place in the square. Later, they were closed. Their small balconies, like the turned bars, must have been painted red ochre, but later, on the occasion of the proclamation of King Charles IV in 1788, they were painted turquoise green. Above the galleries, simple corbels support the eaves, and on the roof, covered with Arabic tiles, there are whitewashed dormers, white chimneys and some iron weather vanes.

 

On the north side of the square, to the right of the Town Hall, is the Villar alley, where you can see the structure of the construction of the houses, as well as other elements, such as a column with a carved capital depicting a jar with lilies. On the south side is the old Toril street, today called Captain Parras, in memory of a son of this town who died in 1924 during the African War. On this street is the house of Diego de Molina el Viejo. The arcade and the glass galleries are truncated by two large granite columns that support foundations and a powerful beam with family shields. The stone-framed doorway, from the end of the 16th century, has a shield with the arms of Molina, Dávila and Fajardo. Other buildings maintain some kind of interest, such as two houses with stone lintels or the Rosales house, with a façade from the end of the 17th century.

En la década de 1960 se comenzó su restauración que concluyó en 1967, tal como figura en una placa colocada en el edificio del Ayuntamiento. La obra, dirigida por el arquitecto Francisco Pons-Sorolla, devolvió al singular conjunto la nobleza y el esplendor del siglo XVI.

 

De planta rectangular irregular, uno de sus lados mayores se abre en la parte correspondiente al Palacio Maestral, y según planos antiguos tiene 125 varas de longitud por 44 de anchura, es decir, 104,5 por 37 metros, aproximadamente.

 

La mayor singularidad de esta plaza se centra en sus lados mayores, donde se levanta un armónico conjunto de viviendas que se disponen sobre soportales en dos alturas, sostenidas por ochenta y cinco columnas de piedra de orden toscano, sobre las que descansan las gruesas zapatas y vigas de madera pintadas de almagre. Estas edificaciones de modestos materiales tienen su mayor originalidad en el doble piso de galería acristalada, que proporciona un característico sabor y notable originalidad al conjunto por tratarse de un caso singular de la arquitectura castellana. Estas galerías estuvieron inicialmente abiertas, eran de carácter público y se utilizaban para presenciar los espectáculos que tenían lugar en la plaza. Posteriormente, fueron cerradas. Sus ventanas balconcillos, al igual que los barrotes torneados, debieron de estar pintados de almagre, pero posteriormente, con motivo de la proclamación del rey Carlos IV en 1788, se pintaron de verde turquesa . Sobre las galerías, sencillos canecillos soportan el alero, y en el tejado, cubierto con teja árabe se levantan buhardillas encaladas, blancas chimeneas y algunas veletas de hierro.

 

En el lado norte de la plaza, a la derecha desde el Ayuntamiento, se abre el callejón del Villar, donde puede observarse la estructura de la construcción de las viviendas, además de otros elementos, como una columna con capitel tallado en el que figura una jarra con azucenas. En el lado sur se localiza la antigua calle del Toril, hoy del Capitán Parras, en recuerdo de un hijo de este pueblo que murió en 1924, durante la Guerra de África. En esta calle se encuentra la casa de Diego de Molina el Viejo. On the north end of the five car train is FL9 2026 which was blt. Sept. 1957 as New Haven 2007 while on the this end is three year younger sister 2011 blt. Sep. 1960 as NH 2038. Both of these units are very much on home rails as FL9s were common on the New Haven's passenger trains here until the cessation of service at the end of the 1964 summer season.

 

This famous structure was constructed during the depths of the depression by the Public Works Administration. At the time of its completion in December 1935 it's 544 ft vertical lift span was the longest such in the world. Supported by a pair of 271 ft towers, when the span is fully raised it provides 135 ft of clearance for vessels passing beneath.

The last two Leica clones from a line that originated with Nicca before they were bought out by Yashica. The YE in the foreground is an improved version of a Leica IIIf based on the Nicca 33, while the YF in the background is a mishmash of features gleaned from Leica IIIf and M3 models that were used on the Nicca 3L

 

Improvements on the YE include: Consecutive speeds on the Slow Speed dial (though they only go down to 1/2 second); Lever winding; and a better Viewfinder/Rangefinder.

 

The YF looks and handles like an M3, with a view/rangefinder that is equivalent to a 35mm FOV with parallax corrected fixed bright lines for 50mm and 100mm; a film loading Back Door for bottom loading; and a single stroke Winder Lever that is mounted below the top cover of the camera. The lens mount is LTM (L39, M39).

 

These were also the last two interchangeable lens 35mm rangefinder cameras produced by Yashica which decided they didn't want to participate in the high-end camera market, catering instead to the consumers who didn't need all the features of the YE and YF.

It's taken me a while to get this pair together. I had the Yashikor lens that came on a different camera, and the YF body, but they were not a match as the Yashikor 50/2.8 came standard on the YE, and the YF had the Yashinon 50/1.8 (later the Super-Yashinon, a change in name only for marketing purposes). I'd like to say they are ready to go now but the YF has a busted shutter curtain. Now that I have the proper lens for it, I am incentivized to send it off for repairs.

### Will Apple Listen to Mark Zuckerberg’s Criticism?

I Don’t Think So—At Least Not for Someone Enchanted by the Apple Vision Pro.

 

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently appeared on a well-known podcast, where he criticized Apple for failing to release an innovative product since the iPhone and for experiencing a decline in sales.

 

Appearing on a podcast originating from Apple and then proceeding to criticize the company might seem like a lighthearted joke, but I believe he was serious.

Why? Because he now wields a weapon—the AR glasses.

 

With the support of various institutions and a team of highly skilled professionals, he has likely achieved some notable milestones. Yet, as someone who has been a devoted Apple user since the PowerBook 540c, I still do not sense any real craftsmanship or identity in what he creates.

 

This sentiment extends to other IT giants that currently dominate the world—Meta, Amazon, Tesla, Microsoft, and Google.

Just by listing their names, readers of this text are likely already picturing their respective CEOs.

 

In the past, I wrote that Steve Jobs was not an artist.

What he excelled at was weaving together scattered ideas from across the world, expanding upon them, and linking them to the future.

The true creator was Jonathan Ive.

A minority of people may share this perspective with me.

 

However, when I see these IT moguls quickly shifting their corporate stances the moment the possibility of Trump returning to power emerges, I feel compelled to speak my mind.

 

The AR glasses, the cars—everything they create lacks a fundamental concept.

Call it ideology or, in lighter terms, identity.

 

It is true that Tim Cook and Apple’s current team have become more prone to letting slip details about upcoming products before their official release.

 

I have always loved music.

Artists shut themselves in a studio, cutting off the outside world, pouring their anger, hatred, joy, and sorrow into each note with intense focus.

It’s as if they are entrusting something to their music.

 

And when they finally release their album, they explain the emotions and thoughts behind its creation.

(Prince, whom I admire, rarely spoke about his work, so understanding his art required engaging with the final product itself.)

 

Until an album is complete and released, artists say nothing.

It was those artists who moved me to my core.

 

The faint glow of Apple’s innovation still remains within me.

Not even last year’s widely criticized "failure"—the Apple Vision Pro—could extinguish it.

In fact, it shines even brighter than the iPhone.

Because beyond its cutting-edge electronic components, I can sense a concept, an ideology.

We found the 8mm film of our honeymoon for the first time in decades, and burned it onto a DVD.

On June 6, 1993, we got married, and headed straight to Nassau, Bahamas, via New York.

Our destination was the pink sand beach where the late Princess Diana went on her honeymoon.

If you're heading to the Bahamas, this might be a good reference.

The hotel we stayed at was the Ramada Hotel, which no longer exists.

My wife is showing us the hotel room.

 

But now you can see the beautiful scenery in real time.

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

マークザッカーバーグ氏の批判に、アップルは耳を傾けるだろうか。

僕にはそう思えない。アップルヴィジョンプロに夢を見せられた僕には。

 

メタのマークザッカーバーグ氏は、有名なポッドキャストに出演し、アップルはアイフォン以来革新的な製品を発売せず、売り上げも落ちていると批判したようだ。

アップル発祥のポッドキャストに現れ、アップルを批判すると言うのは軽いジョークに思えるが、真剣に訴えたんだろうと僕は思う。

なぜなら、今の彼はARグラスという武器を手にしているからだ。

おそらく、さまざまな関係機関や優秀なスタッフが彼を支え、それなりの目標を達成したんだろうが、パワーブック540cから使い続けてきた僕のような古いアップルファンからしてみれば、まだ物作りのアイデンティを彼からはまったく感じない。

 

これは他の、現在世界を制覇しているIT企業らも含む。

メタ、アマゾン、テスラ。マイクロソフト。グーグル。

社名が並ぶだけで、このテキストを読まれている方は名前と顔をすでに浮かべているはずだ。

 

僕は以前、スティーブ・ジョブズはアーティストではないと書いた。

彼は、現世界に散らばったイメージを紡ぎ合わせ、それを膨らます。そして未来へリンクさせる。それが得意だっただけだ。

実際に創作していたのはジョナサンアイブだ。少数ながらも僕のような意見を持っている方もいるだろう。

 

しかし、先述したIT関連の面々が、トランプ氏に再び権力が戻るとなった途端に会社の方針を覆す様子を見ていると、僕は一言、どうしても意見したいのだ。

 

彼らが作ったARグラスや車などには、肝心な観念が欠けている。思想という重い言葉や、軽めのアイデンティティと言い換えてもいい。

確かに、ティムクック氏やアップルの現在のスタッフらは、発売前の商品に関して口を滑らせることが多くなった。

 

僕は、以前から書いているように音楽が大好きだ。

外界を断ち、アーティストらがスタジオにこもって、怒りや憎しみ、喜びや悲しみを一心不乱になって一音に吹き込む。何かを託すと言ってもいい。

そして、完成したアルバムを発表し、どんな思いを込めて制作したのかを語る。(僕が好きなプリンスはほとんど語らなかったので、完成された作品を理解する必要があった)

 

アルバムが完成し、発表するまで、彼らはひとことも語らない。

僕の胸を震わせたのは、そんなアーティストらだった。

 

僕の中に淡く灯っているアップルの革新性は、いまでも消えていない。

それは昨年、大失敗だと批判されたアップルヴィジョンプロでさえも消すことはできない。むしろ、アイフォン以上の強烈な光を放っている。

ただの斬新な電化製品ではなく、細かな電気部品の向こうに観念や思想を感じるからだ。

 

残念ながら、メタのARグラスやテスラの車に、僕がその観念や思想を感じることは今後もないだろう。

 

長々と書いてきたが、結論は以下の記事だ。

一読すると、ティムクック氏も他のIT会社同様、魂を売ったのかと思われるがそうではない。

ティムクック氏は個人的にトランプ氏へ献金をするが、アップル社だけは他社と同じようには献金していない。

アップルは、トランプ氏になびかなかったのだ。

 

アップル社の観念や思想とは、具体的に何かと訊かれたら、僕はこう答える。

アップルとは、自分自身を信じる人間が集まっているグループだ。

 

たぶん、天国のスティーブ・ジョブズは、僕がクソ真面目に書いたテキストを、鼻で笑っていることだろう。

トランプ氏に媚びない会社。

それがAppleさ。:)

1993年6月6日、僕らは結婚し、そのままニューヨークを経由して、バハマのナッソーへ向かいました。

目的地は、亡くなられたダイアナ妃が新婚旅行へ向かったピンクサンドビーチです。

もしもこれからバハマへ向かうならば、参考に見てもよいかもしれません。

泊まったホテルは、今はもうないラマダホテル。

妻がホテルの部屋を紹介しています。

 あらすじ

 大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。

 上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。

 そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。

 大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。

 「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」

 ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。

  

本編

 

人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。

 ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。

 もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。

 二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。

 再生だ。

 明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。

 それが再生の意味だ。

This beautiful plant or vegetable commonly known as a tomato plant, which belongs to the nightshade family, Solanaceae. The species originated in Central and South America. The Nahuatl (Aztec language) word tomatl gave rise to the Spanish word "tomate", from which the English word tomato originates.

Numerous varieties of tomato are widely grown in temperate climates across the world, with greenhouses allowing its production throughout the year and in cooler areas. The plants typically grow to 1–3 meters (3–10 ft) in height and have a weak stem that often sprawls over the ground and vines over other plants. It is a perennial in its native habitat, and grown as an annual in temperate climates. An average common tomato weighs approximately 100 grams (4 oz). Its use as a food originated in Mexico, and spread throughout the world following the Spanish colonization of the Americas. Tomato is consumed in diverse ways, including raw, as an ingredient in many dishes, sauces, salads, and drinks. While tomatoes are botanically berry-type fruits, they are considered culinary vegetables, being ingredients of savory meals.

La Tumba de Dante (en italiano: Sepolcro di Dante) es un monumento nacional italiano de estilo neoclásico construido en 1781 sobre la tumba del histórico poeta Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). Está situado junto a la Basílica de San Francesco, en el centro de la ciudad de Rávena.

El monumento está rodeado por el área denominada "zona dantesca", en la que los visitantes deben permanecer en silencio y mostrar respeto. Junto al monumento se encuentra un pequeño jardín, históricamente conocido como Quadrarco di Braccioforte, el cual tuvo su origen en el claustro monástico. Esta área también incluye los claustros franciscanos, el complejo de museos y la Casa Dante.

En su lecho de muerte, Dante Alighieri expresó su deseo de ser vestido con el hábito franciscano. Eligió como lugar de sepultura el convento de los Frailes Menores, establecido en Rávena en 1261. En 1441, tras la expulsión de la familia Da Polenta por la República de Venecia, la celda que albergaba los restos de Dante quedó en estado de abandono. En 1483, el podestà veneciano Bernardo Bembo emprendió la restauración y ampliación de la tumba a sus expensas. Encargó el trabajo al escultor Pietro Lombardo, quien contó con la colaboración de sus hijos para la ejecución de la obra. En 1778, cuando Luigi Valenti Gonzaga asumió el cargo de legado pontificio en Rávena, el cardenal tomó la decisión de promover la construcción de un nuevo sacello, un pequeño edificio religioso destinado al culto. Para llevar a cabo este proyecto, confió la tarea al reconocido arquitecto de Rávena, Camillo Morigia, conocido por su talento y creatividad en el diseño de espacios arquitectónicos.

Construida entre 1780 y 1781 sobre una estructura anterior del siglo XV, la tumba tiene una planta cuadrada y está diseñada en forma de un pequeño templo neoclásico coronado por una pequeña cúpula, rematada con una piña. Separada de la calle por una estrecha delimitación, su fachada exterior es muy sencilla. Incluye una puerta sobre la que se encuentra el escudo arzobispal del Cardenal Gonzaga, y en cuyo arquitrabe se lee, de manera simple y en latín: Dantis poetae sepulcrum ("Tumba del poeta Dante")

Destacan dos elementos decorativos: una serpiente que se muerde la cola (Uróboros), símbolo de la eternidad de la fama del Poeta, y el escudo del cardenal Gonzaga. Las hojas de la puerta de acceso están hechas de madera.

A la derecha del monumento funerario se encuentra un pequeño jardín que incluye, entre otros elementos, el Quadrarco di Braccioforte. Desde 1921, este jardín está cerrado con una reja de hierro forjado diseñada por el artista veneciano Umberto Bellotto.

The Tomb of Dante (Italian: Sepolcro di Dante) is an Italian neoclassical national monument built over the tomb of the poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) in 1781. It is sited next to the Basilica of San Francesco in central Ravenna.

The monument is surrounded by a "zona dantesca", in which visitors have to remain silent and respectful. The small garden to the monument's right originated as the monastic cloister but now only has a colonnade on one side. The garden is traditionally named after the Quadrarco di Braccioforte, where two people invoked the "strong arm" of Christ to guarantee their contract and therefore had the image of that arm painted on the arch.

Dante spent his final years in exile in Ravenna and died there in 1321. The day after his death his funeral was held in the cloister of the basilica, then a Franciscan monastery, the Church of San Pier Maggiore, later called Basilica di San Francesco. He was then buried outside the cloister by the roadside in an ancient Roman sarcophagus, in which he still rests.

 

The sarcophagus was moved to the west side of the cloister by Bernardo Bembo, Venetian podestà of Ravenna, at the end of the 15th century.

A few years later Dante's hometown of Florence began making requests to have his remains returned. This had the support of two Medici popes, Pope Leo X and Pope Clement VII. The first request was supported by Michelangelo and in 1519 Leo granted Florence permission to move the sarcophagus there, but the Franciscans had enough time to make a hole in the wall and secretly move Dante's bones there. A Tuscan delegation duly arrived but found the sarcophagus empty. It was moved into the cloister and kept under guard.

Meanwhile the bones were put in a new box in 1677 by Antonio Sarti, prior of the monastery. The sarcophagus was restored under armed guard in 1692. The bones were put back in their original sarcophagus in 1781, the same year as the monument was completed, having been commissioned from the local architect Camillo Morigia by Luigi Valenti Gonzaga, the cardinal legate in Romagna. Square in plan and with a small cupola and dome, it covers the sarcophagus. Its interior is covered in marble and stucco. Morigia planned to have images of Virgil, Brunetto Latini, Cangrande della Scala and Guido Novello da Polenta in the pendentives of the dome's interior vault, but this plan was abandoned.

Behind the sarcophagus is a 1483 bas-relief by Pietro Lombardo, which also stood in this position for most of the 15th century, showing Dante reading at a lectern. From the ceiling hangs an 18th century votive lamp, continually kept burning with olive oil from the Tuscan hills donated by Florence every 14 September, the anniversary of Dante's death. The monument's facade to the street is very simple, with a gate surmounted by Cardinal Gonzaga's archiepiscopal coat of arms and the simple inscription "DANTIS POETAE SEPULCRUM" ("tomb of Dante the poet"). The friars hid the bones in the 1677 box again in 1810 during the French occupation to prevent them being confiscated. They hid the box under an old doorway between the Basilica of San Francesco and the Braccioforte Chapel before leaving the city. Florence had not given up hope of having the remains removed from Ravenna, however, and in 1829 the city erected a cenotaph in Santa Croce Basilica, showing the poet seated in thought and a personification of Poetry weeping over the sarcophagus.

 

The box's location was forgotten until 27 May 1865, when it was found by a worker carrying out restoration work for the 600th anniversary of Dante's birth. A young student and later a respected notary, Matteucci Anastasio, noticed the words "OSSA DANTIS" (Dante's bones) on the box and saved it from being thrown into a common grave. (The full inscription stated: "Dantis ossa a me Frate Antonio Santi hic posita 1677, die 18 Octobris", written by Friar Santi.)

The almost complete skeleton of bones were rearticulated and put on display to the public in a crystal coffin for a few months before being reburied under the monument in a walnut chest protected by a lead cover. It remains in place and has never been returned to Florence.

In 1921 a bronze garland was added to the foot of the sarcophagus in memory of the dead of World War I, as well as a marble plaque to its right describing the various restorations of the tomb and an iron gate to the neighbouring garden, designed by the Venetian artist Umberto Bellotto. The bones were hidden yet again during World War II to prevent them being destroyed by bombing. They were buried in the garden from March 1944 to 19 December 1945 until they were returned to the monument, now marked with a plaque. The monument was restored in 2006–2007, including a complete repainting of its facades.

The Horton Flags (shale and greywacke, a coarsely-sorted sandstone) in the valley originated as material cascading over the edge of a Silurian continental shelf ~430 million years ago. About 100 million years later in the Carboniferous era, those deposits had lithified to become the bed of a shallow tropical sea, on which organic material fossilised to form the overlying Great Scar limestone. Subsequent erosion cut the valley of Crummackdale, re-exposing the older rock.

 

About 15,000 years ago, the glacier occupying Crummackdale scoured blocks of the Silurian greywacke from nearby low cliffs and the valley floor, transporting them about a kilometre before redepositing them here, high on the valley side, at the end of the Ice Age. That in itself is of interest to geologists, as the displaced boulders, or 'erratics' are ~100 million years older than the Carboniferous bedrock beneath them.

 

Greywacke is far more resistant to erosion than the underlying limestone, so over millennia, the ground level has been considerably lowered by solutional weathering – except where protected by overlying greywacke canopies. The result can look startling, with large boulders 'precariously' balanced on disproportionately narrow, half-metre high pedestals. It's no wonder that the Norber Erratics are of national importance to geologists and geomorphologists, not only as textbook examples (literally!) of the processes but also as dramatic inspiration to students. Even when not on the famous pedestals (and, frankly, few are), the Erratics are quite distinct from the native bedrock, as the the Silurian greywacke has been colonised by darker and greener species of lichen than the Carboniferous limestone (favoured by grey and white species), thereby amplifying the colour difference between the bare rocks.

 

As hinted above, it has to be acknowledged that that though Norber is densely-scattered with large blocks of greywacke dumped here by ice, most rest directly on the ground and the famous boulders on pedestals are the exception; this is the best I could find today. Publicity and visitors' photos might suggest they're everywhere, but I'd recommend looking towards the top of the field, rather than amongst the greatest density of boulders on the mid-slope.

In the background, the valley to the left of the boulder is the 'pass' between Austwick and Helwith Bridge; it doesn't seem to be a named glacial valley, but it's the best route I know to Ribblesdale, and hence Pen-y-ghent, from the west. Note it was formed by glaciation of the Craven Fault system, rather than carved by a river – as is typical for limestone, there are no significant surface watercourses.
