The first chrysanthemums originated in East Asia, with the majority coming from China. One of the first notes of chrysanthemums comes from the Chinese philosopher Confucious. Thousands of years ago he mentioned the chrysanthemum in his works. This reference described a simple golden flower rather than the chrysanthemums we know today.

A few hundred years later, Chinese people began cultivating these flowers. The Chinese held these flowers in a special light and many beautiful flowers were grown in China. Sometime during the fourth century, Buddhist Monks carried chrysanthemum plants to Japan. The Japanese quickly fell in love with the flower, so much so that they made it part of the Emperor’s crest and a symbol of the royal family.

Originating out Buddy Holly’s hometown of Lubbock, TX, BNSF 7369 West leads a unit train of cotton seed through the Tehachapis on its way north to Stockton. The distributed power on this movement was reminiscent of long heavy SP trains that once utilized swing and rear end helper sets on the mountain to help keep tonnage rolling.

Shambles originates from an Anglo-Saxon word for flesh market and some of the shops still have meat hooks in the walls. Many of the buildings date back to the 14th Century.

"Run, Forrest, Run!" is a meme that originated from the movie, Forrest Gump. When the bullies were chasing Forrest, Jenny (his mom) started yelling, "run, forrest, run!" and this helped Forrest run faster away from the bullies. This eventually led Forrest being able to run across the country many times when he was an adult.

Ortygia is a small island which is the historical centre of the city of Syracuse, Sicily. The island, also known as the Città Vecchia (Old City), contains many historical landmarks. The name originates from the ancient Greek ortyx, which means "Quail"

The Homeric Hymn to Delian Apollo has it that the goddess Leto stopped at Ortygia to give birth to Artemis, the firstborn of her twins. Artemis then helped Leto across the sea to the island of Delos, where Leto gave birth to Apollo. Other ancient sources state that the twins were born in the same place – which was either Delos or Ortygia – but Ortygia, according to Strabo was an old name of Delos. Further, there were perhaps a half-dozen other places called Ortygia, so that the identification is uncertain.

It was also said that Asteria, the sister of Leto, metamorphosed into a quail (Ortyx), threw herself into the sea, and was metamorphosed into the island of Ortygia. Another myth suggested that it was Delos, rather than Ortygia.

Eos, the goddess of the dawn, fell in love with the mortal hunter Orion and abducted him to Ortygia, where he met Artemis and joined her retinue. He was slain by the goddess either for because the gods did not approve of goddesses taking mortal men to lovers, or for challenging her in an archery contest, or trying to force himself upon one of her maids.

Ortygia was the mythological home of Arethusa, a chaste nymph who, while fleeing a river god, was transformed by Artemis into a spring, traversed underground and appeared here, thus providing water for the city. Arethusa and her pursuer, the river god Alpheus, came from Arcadia in Greece

Ortygia, being an island just off the coast, was easily transformed into a natural fortress with harbors and was big enough that it could hold a significant population in ancient times. Therefore, the history of Ortygia is synonymous with the early history of Syracuse.

Reynisdrangar are basalt sea stacks situated under the mountain Reynisfjall near the town Vík í Mýrdal in Iceland.

Legend says that the stacks originated when trolls dragged a three-masted ship to land unsuccessfully and when daylight broke they became needles of rock.

It's hard being a troll....

It's even harder finding the sea so flat, so a loooong exposure was needed here 'and' a wonderful sun.

All images are mine :-)

The name has nothing to do with ships, but with ducks. It appears in writing for the first time in 1656, and originates from the Mi'kmaq Sepagun-chiche, which roughly translates as "Ducks' transit route".

Mespelbrunn Castle is a late-medieval/early-Renaissance moated castle on the territory of the town of Mespelbrunn, between Frankfurt and Würzburg, built in a tributary valley of the Elsava valley, within the Spessart forest. It is a popular tourist attraction and has become a famous Spessart landmark.

The first precursor of Mespelbrunn Castle was a simple house. The owner was Hamann Echter, vizedom of Aschaffenburg, a title which means that he was the representative of the ruling prince, the Archbishop of Mainz Johann von Nassau-Wiesbaden-Idstein (de) at the castle and town of Aschaffenburg. On 1 May 1412, Johann gave the site, a forest clearing next to a pond, to Echter, a knight, who constructed a house without fortifications. It was a reward for Echter's services against the Czechs. The Echter family (de) originates from the Odenwald region. Their name presumably means "der die Acht vollstreckt", the executor of the ostracism. In the 15th century the Spessart was a wild and unexploited virgin forest, used as a hideout by bandits and Hussites, who despoiled the regions nearby. Therefore, in 1427 Hamann Echter, the son of the first owner, began to rebuild his father's house to a fortified castle with walls, towers, and a moat using the nearby lake.

In 1957, Mespelbrunn Castle was one of the locations of the German film Das Wirtshaus im Spessart (The Spessart Inn, 1958), based on the novella by Wilhelm Hauff.

The church of St Michael originated as a mission church and from 1910 services were held in a temporary iron church in Golders Green Road. In 1914, when the parish was taken from that of St Mary, Hendon, work began on the building of a new church. This church, a large Gothic building of buff brick, was designed by J.T. Lee of Tufnell Park. Two more bays were added to the nave in 1925 and a low north western tower, surmounted by a classic cupola, was added in 1960. From 1970 the church was shared with a Greek Orthodox community, which had previously used Christ Church, Brent Street. St Michael’s Church was closed in 1979 on union with St Alban the Martyr and is now used wholly by an Orthodox congregation made up of Greeks, Cypriots, Russians, Romanians, Egyptians and English.

CSX's Q384 originated the day before in Grand Rapids, MI and has spent some time working Walbridge yard on the southeast side of Toledo but now has their train together and is heading south down the former C&O. The classic signals here at "Turnpike" have long protected this stretch of track but replacement work is under way and they'll be gone before the end of the year. 4/2/18

This is a female Village Weaver - Ploceus cucullatus. Originating in sub-Saharan Africa the species probably arrived on Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic) at the end of the 18th century on slave ships. It is happy in open habitats such as savannahs, fields, gardens, open woodlands and human habitation does not bother it. They build nests which hang from tree branches using grass and leaf strips which can be in colonies of from 8 to 100 nests per tree. They prefer large trees especially if they overhang water but they will also nest in reed beds by rivers and streams. Village Weavers forage on the ground as well as on crops, eating seeds, fruit, ant eggs, mealworms, insects, ripe cacti fruits, rice and even fresh vegetation. This one was seen in the grounds of our hotel in the Dominican Republic.

Iron horse is an iconic literary term for a steam locomotive, originating in the early 1800s, when horses still powered most machinery.

During the Iron Age, iron ore was converted to a useable metal in 'bloomeries' - small beehive shaped furnaces of hardened clay, using charcoal, which was produced by burning trees. Bloomeries were later superseded by 'blast furnaces'. This process was refined and continued through the Middle Ages and until the late 18th Century.

Camelot (73082) was built at Derby in July 1955 and was put to work on the Kent Coast line and on Dover and Folkestone boat trains which continued until the Kent Coast electrification scheme was completed in 1959,

On Christmas Eve 1964 the locomotive achieved a speed of 107mph through Andover

With the onset of dieselisation Camelot moved to Guildford in 1965 and withdrawn from there in June 1966. After storage at Eastleigh, Camelot was bought by Woodham Brothers and moved to the Barry scrapyard in November 1966.

Following a visit to the scrapyard in Barry the 73082 Camelot Locomotive Society was formed in March 1974 with the aim of buying Camelot and restoring the locomotive to working order

After several years, and several price increases, the money was raised and Camelot was bought in January 1979 for £8,100.

The Bluebell Railway was chosen as Camelot’s future home as they had already helped to obtain a suitable tender chassis from a South Wales steelworks as there were no Standard tenders remaining at Barry. Camelot was moved from Barry to the Bluebell Railway in October 1979.

“There is little information found about her life and work. It is known that she was born in about 1577 and belonged to the old noble Ukrainian family of Hulevych from Volyn region.

Her name Halshka originates from the Polish name Elzbieta that is Yelyzaveta. This form of the name was quite popular in those times.

Halshka's first marriage was quite short-lived and lasted for about 5 years. Her husband's early death made her get married for the second time in about 1601- 1602 to Stefan Lozka, a noble from Kyiv Region. From that time she and her husband settled down in Kyiv since Stefan Lozka had a manor house in Podil area.

At that time in Kyiv there was an escalation of religious fighting between the representatives of the Uniate Church and the Orthodox Church. As Halshka descended from an old Orthodox family, she decided to support the church financially. Back then the church was the centre of education and culture. Thus, in 1615 she made a gift deed for the land to Kyiv Brotherhood – a religious and cultural organization that protected Orthodox Christians from the pressure of the government and the representatives of other confessions within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

In the deed of gift agreement it was also noted that she was donating the property "for the school for children, both noble and bourgeois."

Nowadays historians are arguing about the accuracy of the deed of gift agreement as we only have the copy of the later time. Other documents, for example, a confirming act of the Polish King for the property of Kyiv Brotherhood, say that the patron donated only the "yard" that is to say the piece of land where they built a hospital and a church but there was no information about the school.

Putting aside the discussions around the text of the deed of gift agreement, it is a fact that Halshka was one of the first Kyivans that donated a significant part of her property to charity. Her donation laid the groundwork for the activity of Kyiv Brotherhood School, later on a college and eventually Kyiv Mohyla Academy – the first University in Eastern Europe.

After the death of her second husband in 1618 Halshka moved to Lutsk where she supported Lutsk Orthodox Brotherhood and its school. In 1641 she made the will according to which she left almost all her property to Lutsk Brotherhood School and the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. This fact proves us one more time that Halshka Hulevychivna consciously and successively supported the development of education and culture over the course of her life.”

Chrysanthemums originated in China and they were transported to Japan about 1500 years ago and then went to Europe in the eighteenth century. Chrysanthemums still grow in the wild in China and Far Eastern countries in many different aspects, which include grasslands, riversides, mountain slopes, fields and along the seashore. A couple of interesting facts I found out, which I thought other people might like to know, ‘The Chinese named their royal throne after the Chrysanthemum and the Japanese Imperial family use a Chrysanthemum Seal as the imperial seal of Japan,’ and ‘Chrysanthemum flowers are used to make Chrysanthemum tea in China.’ The Chrysanthemum plants of today come in a wide variety of different shapes, sizes and colour and they last such a long time either in the garden or as cut flowers.

Irlanda - Dublín - Guinness Storehouse

ENGLISH:

Guinness is an Irish dry stout that originated in the brewery of Arthur Guinness (1725–1803) at St. James's Gate brewery in the capital city of Dublin, Ireland. Guinness, produced by the Diageo beverages company, is one of the most successful beer brands worldwide. It is brewed in almost 50 countries and is available in over 120.

Guinness features a burnt flavour that is derived from malted barley and roasted unmalted barley. The use of roasted barley is a relatively modern development, not becoming part of the grist until the mid-20th century. For many years, a portion of aged brew was blended with freshly brewed beer to give a sharp lactic flavour. Although Guinness's palate still features a characteristic "tang", the company has refused to confirm whether this type of blending still occurs. The draught beer's thick, creamy head comes from mixing the beer with nitrogen and carbon dioxide when poured. It is popular with the Irish, both in Ireland and abroad. In spite of declining consumption since 2001, it is still the best-selling alcoholic drink in Ireland where Guinness & Co. Brewery makes almost €2 billion worth of the beverage annually.

The company was started in 1759 in Dublin, but had to move its headquarters to London at the beginning of the Anglo-Irish Trade War in 1932. In 1997, Guinness plc merged with Grand Metropolitan to form the multinational alcoholic drinks producer Diageo.

The Cape Cod Central Railroad's 5 PM dinner train which originated at North Falmouth on the remains of the former New Haven Woods Hole Branch made a run south down the Cape Main as far as the great marshes in Barnstable and is now headed back north to Canal Junction to get out of the way back on the Falmouth Line just ahead of the 7:10 PM arrival of the southbound CapeFLYER from Boston. They are at about MP 59.7 on the MassDOT owned and Mass Coastal Railroad Cape Mainline just north of the former location of the New Haven Railroad's Sagamore station.

On the north end of the five car train is FL9 2026 which was blt. Sept. 1957 as New Haven 2007 while on the south end is three year younger sister 2011 blt. Sep. 1960 as NH 2038. Both of these units are very much on home rails as FL9s were common on the New Haven's passenger trains here until the cessation of service at the end of the 1964 summer season.

This view is taken from the sidewalk on the east side of the Sagamore Bridge looking compass east (railroad south) toward Cape Cod Bay. Immediately above the train is the blue water of the canal and on the shore can be seen US Coast Guard Station Cape Cod with the bay the first line of trees and the outer Cape toward Wellfleet the second line of trees on the horizon.

The bridge I'm standing on was built between 1933 and 1935 by the Public Works Adminstration (along with its sister span the Bourne Bridge to the west) and is 1408 ft long and 275 ft high with a rather narrow 40 ft width for four lanes. The bridges became necessary after the government purchased the privately owned toll canal in 1928 and began widening and deepening it between 1935 and 1940.

The swan originates from the Black Swan Hotel which stood on the corner of Southgate Street since the early 19th century. Before that, the building was an inn known as the Old Swan. The Black Swan Hotel was famously visited by Sherlock Holmes and Watson in Sir Arthur Conan Doyles’ ‘The Adventure of the Copper Beeches’.

The hotel was replaced in 1935 with Black Swan Buildings and the carved swan is the last remnant of the hotel. In 1945 the swan fell to pieces and members of the public raised £55 needed for local craftsman Edwin Laverty to carve a new swan.

Another colorful leader and consist appeared on the Seligman Sub today with an ethanol train from Lawler, IA to Stockton, CA. The train originated at the Homeland Energy Solutions plant and was handed off from the CPKC to the BNSF at Kansas City. BNSF is running it as the U-CLHEES7-30A with 98 loads at 5832' and 13,582 tons. Here the CSXT 3424 and 249, and KCSM 4515 have them climbing out of the sag at Bootlegger and into the curve under the San Francisco Peaks. Looking back over the train, one will see 2 BNSF mid-train DP's providing another 8800hp. The entire scene should be under the cover of snow, but the warm winter has prevented any moisture from staying in place except for at the extreme elevations of northern Arizona.

Normally the the Cape Cod Central Railroad's Friday dinner train originates from Buzzards Bay, but this particular day was one of the few times a year they board the train on the very south end of the Falmouth branch allowing for photos on the lower three miles of the line which is otherwise freight only

Here is the five PM train rolling north past the old Monument Beach passenger station at MP 1.8 on the surving northern end of the state owned and Mass Coastal Railroad operated former New Haven Woods Hole Branch now known as the Falmouth Line. They are headed to Canal Junction to nose out onto the Cape Cod Canal lift bridge where they would reverse direction and run south down the Cape Main to the great marshes in Barnstable before returning back to Canal Junction just ahead of the 7:10 PM arrival of the southbound CapeFLYER from Boston.

This little brick depot is the third on the site and was constructed by the New Haven Railroad in 1906 after the 1880 built second depot was destroyed by a fire that wiped out nearly all of the village1. The brick portion and platform canopy are original but the second story addition is new as the depot now serves as a split residence and rental property.

Amazingly this is one of four original depots that survive from the only 17 mile long Woods Hole Branch. Three remain in their original locations: this one and Cataumet beside the active line and Falmouth on the abandoned portion that is now a bike path along with Grey Gables which has been relocated to the Aptuxcet trading post museum next to the Cape Mainline.

On the north end of the five car train is FL9 2026 which was blt. Sept. 1957 as New Haven 2007 while on the south end is three year younger sister 2011 blt. Sep. 1960 as NH 2038. Though this may be historic 'home' rails for these beauties there is no evidence an FL9 ever ran down this line in service for its original owner. In the NH's last years of passenger service in the late 1950s and early 1960s this line was normally the domain of RDCs or RS3 hauled conventional consists.

Heard of TAOIST CITY GOD?

The Taoist City God is originated from people worshipping the natural world and is the god that guards the city in the ancient times legend. In the records of memorial ceremonies of early Zhou Dynasty, there were words of water (that is Huang) and city wall (that is Cheng). In ancient times, Chinese called the water moat outside a city wall as " pond ", and dry moat outside a city wall as "Huang". The Taoist City God as god is allegedly derived as according to the records of from the water (that is Huang) and city wall (that is Cheng) of memorial ceremony made to the Eight Zha God.

The Taoist City God was originally God of nature but accompanying the development and transformation of society; the people bestowed on him even more social functions. Hence, the Taoist City God gradually progressed to become God of the society. The most original and key function of the Taoist City God is to guard the city, protect the people, avert calamity and remove troubles. After the Song Dynasty, Taoism takes the City God as God of cutting down the evils, removing ferocity, protecting the country and ensuring peace in the nation. Referring to him as a God who is able to response to the calls of the people, bring rain when drought is prevailing, clear up the sky when rainy, in order to protect abundant grain to sufficiently satisfy the people need. The City God also acts a local officer of hell by administering the underworld affairs of that locality and all things that people fails to reach. People believe him to possess the power to punish and appease the evil spirits. Taoist priests performing rite to reach the underworld to release a soul of a newly deceased from purgatory have to notify the City God by way of a "City God official document" in order to be able to arrest and escort the soul of the newly deceased to the altar. In a word, the scope of duty of City God is closely related with the life of the common people and it seems that the common people, believes in the City Gods ability to protect their livelihood and live, brings many material benefits and utilities. So, the belief in City God just becomes widely popular and a religious activity of the common people with energetic influence.

This train originated in Blerick (NL) and consisted of the following ex-Nederlandse Spoorwegen DMUs: 3401 + 3416 + 3412 + 3451 + 3417 + 3418 + 3408. It was one of the last trains that morning which could escape the strike at DB Infra No between Regensburg and Passau this morning. The train runs in Austria, but the background is Germany. In between is the river Inn.

Originating at the foothills of Imbabura volcano, the Cascada de Peguche is considered an indigenous ceremonial site. The waterfall is said to cleanse the body and soul.

Langerei a canal and a name of a street in the Ezelstraat Quarter, northern Bruges, Flanders, Belgium.

The canal originates from the Spiegelrei and starts at the Carmersbrug and ends at the Dampoort. The street of the same name, located on the west bank, runs from the Golden Hand Bridge to the Wulpenstraat. The street on the other side of the water is the Potterierei.

The watercourse and the street have a slightly winding path, along the bed of the original river Reie. At the current 's-Gravenstraat, the Reie was deflected to the east in the late 12th century to connect with the shipping connection that led to the newly founded Damme. The Langerei is spanned by the Snaggaard Bridge, the Duinenbrug and the Leonardsstuwbrug.

The canal is bordered with quay walls made of brick, with on top of bluestone cover plates or an iron parapet. The buildings, of predominantly two or three storeys, have commercial and residential functions, and date from the 15th to the 20th century.

Originally the name Roye was used for the place. From the 13th century the name Houtbrekersdam is mentioned, which refers to the shipbuilding activities. For the area to the west, the toponyms Koetelwic or Ketelwic, or in short, the district, can also be found until the 16th century, which would be situated in that area. They point to a mooring and settlement that existed from the 11th century, and possibly already earlier. From the last quarter of the 16th century the name Langerei is used for the long stretch on the west bank of the canal.

From the Roman times until the 15th century, the watercourse was the most important maritime traffic route in Bruges. Through the later (and now disappeared) Dampoort complex there was a connection with the sea. The District had many trading activities until the end of the 12th century; then the center of gravity moved to the Kraanrei and Spiegelrei.

Between 1623 and 1855, the Langerei was still important as part of the canal between Ostend, Bruges, and Ghent. Then the Ringvaart took over this role. Until the 20s of the 20th century, inland vessels were arriving.

In the years 1972-1974 the swing bridges were replaced by solid stone bridges: the Carmersbrug, the Snaggaardsbrug and the Duinenbrug.
