Origin: Italy. Circa: 1890. Period: 19th Century. Venetian Mirror, Murano, Italy c. 1890. This elegant example of the Venetian art of mirror and glass making showcases the various aspects that have made these mirrors objects of desire for hundreds of years. Please use the zoom feature offered on our website to enlarge the additional photographs in order to see the components that create this beautiful mirror. As a bit of history the inventive skill of Venetian glass and mirror makers lay in their understanding of how to take the technical limitations of their time and use them to highly decorative advantage. When mirrors were first invented and able to be made in an ongoing manner the entire industry was removed from Venice proper to the isolated island of Murano to limit the danger to the city if a fire was to break out. Until the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries large sheets of mirror glass were not able to be made with any great quality control so large and grand mirrors were assembled from smaller pieces and built up within frames that could support a multitude of separate pieces of mirror glass. What a beautiful evening teaching the origins of Bhangra and some dance moves. Opportunity to experience nature and story though cinema, visual Sences and touch. Darnall Allotment Project we’re juicing apples and pears- delicious and the fish heads were amazing musicians. Culminated in a parade, an amazing meal and watching the 100th light come in along the canal at Victoria Quays. Just beautiful.

The Light Tree Celebrations is a festival held in honour of a strange and magnificent tree that once grew on the Sheffield Canal. Maybe the existence of the tree is just a rumour, or the fever dream of an old boat-builder, or maybe it was really there. Whatever the truth is, we’re celebrating. Prepare to be pleasantly dazzled.
This celebration event marks the end of a three year project, led by The Bare Project and commissioned by the Canal and River Trust. The Bare Project have led creative arts, food, and permaculture activities, working with communities in Darnall, Attercliffe, Tinsley and the Wicker – neighbourhoods which sit alongside the Sheffield-Tinsley canal. The national project is called Into The Hinterlands, a national arts programme delivered by the Canal and River Trust in collaboration with regional partners, promoting wellbeing and connecting communities, with participatory events along three remote rural, urban and suburban waterways: Pontymoile, Sheffield and Enfield & Tottenham.
This project has also received support from The Talbot Trusts, the Darnall Area Trust Fund and Arts Council England.

À l’origine, le château se trouve une vieille ferme, les moines y ajoutent un bâtiment de plusieurs étages. La construction est vendue en 1616. Un corps de logis est construit pour former le milieu du château actuel.
La maison passe de mains en mains jusqu’à ce que, sous Louis XIV, le duc de La Rochefoucauld la fasse achever.
La marquise de Pompadour l’acquiert en 1748, l’appelle « le petit château », ajoute de nouveaux embellissements, et y accueille Louis XV.
Dès 1750, Jacques-Jérémie Roussel, fermier général, remplace madame de Pompadour ; il construit le pavillon et l’aile nord, ainsi le château acquiert sa forme actuelle.
En 1804, le vicomte Morel de Vindé, pair de France, en devient le propriétaire ; il y entretient l’un des plus beaux troupeaux de moutons mérinos de France et y reçoit Louis XVIII.
En 1844, Jean-Pierre Pescatore l’acquiert, puis le château est légué à sa nièce Élisabeth Pescatore-Dutreux. Napoléon III y est reçu.
Par voie de succession, le château restera près d’un siècle en possession de la famille Dutreux.
En 1940, La grande duchesse Charlotte de Luxembourg y trouve refuge pendant une semaine ; puis les Allemands occupent les lieux.
Auguste Dutreux désire qu’après sa mort, le château et son parc soient conservés dans leur intégralité ; il les lègue, le 7 février 1951, au ministre des Affaires étrangères avec des conditions d’utilisation très strictes.

En 1775 le jardin à l'anglaise est crée par Jean-Marie Morel pour Panat de Chalandry
Jean-Pierre Pescatore, propriétaire du château de 1844 à 1855, embellit le parc avec le concours des frères Bulher, architectes-paysagistes de renom. Il constitua, entre autres l’« allée des arbres étrangers ».
Élisabeth Pescatore, sa nièce, hérita du château et, aidée de son mari Auguste Dutreux, entreprit d’importants aménagements dans le parc : de superbes arbres d’ornement en font encore aujourd’hui la beauté majestueuse et centenaire.
Le parc du château de La Celle-Saint-Cloud a été classé parmi les sites du département des Yvelines par un arrêté en date du 22 mars 1985.

Hardwick Hall was built by 'Bess of Hardwick', who, as history recalls her, rose from humble origins to become on of the most powerful people in the court of Queen Elizabeth I. She married four times, each time gaining more wealth and her fourth husband was the Earl of Shrewsbury, one of the richest and most powerful of the English nobles of the time. After his death, in 1590, she built Hardwick Hall. It stands on top of a hill, and can be seen for miles around. It is particularly notable for the number of windows, glass was very expensive at this time, and was known for having 'more glass than wall'. In order to obtain perfect symmetry some of the 'windows' are in fact false, but still contain glass. Her initials, ES, can be seen everywhere in the building.The architect is believed to have been Robert Smythson.

Cockatoo Island
Look closely at these walls and gates and you will not notice anything unusual. They seem to fit in beautifully, too, with the building they are situated in on Cockatoo Island.
I have visited the island 3 times before and walked past these walls a number of times.
Last night Brendan, one of the staff on Cockatoo Island, explained that these 'brick' walls were actually cardboard and the "iron" gate is really made of wood. We touched them and yes, they certainly are! Even at very short range it is impossible to spot the deception.

Tasting Britain got the invite down to Blessing’s Wine & Cocktail Bar in Spitalfields, London, to see what Abdulla Amin and Hugo Toland (AKA ‘Origins Of’) are all about. Londoners and friends of 20 years, this is Abdulla and Hugo’s first 'kitchen takeover’ - and as far as I can tell they’re strongly Middle Eastern inspired; flatbreads, falafel (etc). Abdulla started getting the ideas for a lot of these dishes when out in Afghanistan, and a few of the recipes (such as the 'hummus and pickles') have been handed down from his family on his mother’s side. That’s about all I can say about about the food having only had the chance to try a little of it - this place was uh…heaving.
As for Blessings - it’s a converted 3 story townhouse, cafe by day, bar by night and not so far away from Brick Lane or Spitalfields Market. Each floor gets used! The basement bar is perhaps the liveliest of them all, hosting live music and DJs at certain times of the week, on the first floor above this is Phil’s Bar (I am told that Phil is one of the owners…) - Phil’s Bar is a little more relaxed than below, full of comfortable sofas, chesterfields., and something they’re calling ‘a vintage den’ - great views of The City from there. Above that is the roof terrace, which is probably the strangest roof terrace I have ever seen - yes that is a bike embedded into the wall (...I’ll let the photos do the talking).
