The British Pullman takes its name from George Mortimer Pullman, an American, who in 1864 built The Pioneer, the first railway carriage designed with true comfort for the passenger. The later creation of the Pullman Car Company in 1882 led to his domination of luxury train travel in the US and later, Great Britain. Rail cars based on the principles of full-service Pullman rail travel were included in many trains across Europe. After a period of decline in the second half of the twentieth century, the Venice-Simplon Orient Express led the way in introducing the travelling public to the delights of luxury trains once again, resulting in this sister train that has carried Royalty and Heads of State around Great Britain.

With sleeping carriages and restaurant cars in place, Nagelmackers was finally able to fulfil his dream and on 4th October 1883 the first Orient-Express train service was inaugurated. The initial route ran from Paris to Giurgi (on the Danube in Romania), via Strasbourg, Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest.

"The Orient Express was a long-distance passenger train service created in 1883 by Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (CIWL).
The route and rolling stock of the Orient Express changed many times. Several routes in the past concurrently used the Orient Express name, or slight variations. Although the original Orient Express was simply a normal international railway service, the name became synonymous with intrigue and luxury travel. The two city names most prominently associated with the Orient Express are Paris and Constantinople (Istanbul), the original endpoints of the timetabled service. The Orient Express was a showcase of luxury and comfort at a time when travelling was still rough and dangerous."
I had the opportunity to meet Michael Gale (FX Bricks) and chat about LEGO and Trains and 9V and all that fun stuff. I brought my 9V Power Pickup wheelsets from Bevin Bricks, and we gave them some testing on the huge Test Track Michael had brought.
After using it for a more standard train motor, I did some quick and dirty mods to put it on my Orient Express, and the impossible became possible, as my power functions-powered train was now running off of 9v power.
Op 13 juni 2013 kwam de OrientExpress nog eens naar ons land. Tot FBMZ werd de loc gereden door een 3000 van de CFL, vanaf daar mocht een reeks 20 de trein overnemen tot in Oostende en terug.
De trein kon ik platen in Westrem. Het is ook de enige keer dat ik een loc uit de reeks 20 deftig op de foto kon vastleggen, al maakte de loc het er zelf niet makkelijker op door het zand dat gestrooid werd in combinatie met heel wat wind.

Taken around 4pm, just as the rain stopped. I believe the railway sheds on the left are called the Grosvenor Bridge Depot or simply Grosvenor Shed? "The Golden Age of Travel by Steam" trip costs £395 per person and includes a five-course lunch with champagne and half a bottle of wine per person.

La Venise-Simplon-Orient-Express reliant Venise à Paris passe sous les premières lueurs du jour à Labergement-Sainte-Marie. Sur la marche entre Vallorbe et Paris-Austerlitz, il est tracté par la BB26019 arborant une livrée spéciale, montée HLP pour venir le chercher la veille.

On my birthday in June 1999 the family enjoyed a day trip to France ending up in Boulogne. Sadly travel was not possible but the rejuvenated Orient express stock was in the harbour station and available for a photograph. Just look at the state of the track bed and cobble stonework. Looks like the Maritime branch is on its last legs.
Une semaine après la fermeture de l'Orient Express, j'apprenais par un des employés du feu cinéma, qu'un article sur notre soirée d'adieu avait été écrit dans Télérama (Télé quoi ? mais si, le magazine "bobo" & snob !).
Ni une, ni deux, j'ai lancé un appel aux âmes charitables, afin de me transmettre une copie de ce papier.
Visiblement, aucune personne dans mes connaissances et encore moins dans mon lectorat n'était en mesure de me fournir ce dont je demandais...
Bref... après moult recherches voici donc l'article :
On pourra retenir cette phrase qui ne fait que confirmer que son auteur (Mathilde Blottière) ne doit pas fréquenter souvent les salles de cinéma, où alors seulement celles des quartiers chics & hipster...

Am 5. Juni 1883 fuhr der legendäre Orient-Express der Compagnie Internationale Des Wagons-Lits", der nicht zuletzt durch Agatha Christies verfilmten Kriminalroman „Mord im Orient-Express" (1974 für sechs Oscars nominiert) so populär wurde, das erste Mal vom Bahnhof Paris Est in Richtung Osten.
Es handelte sich um einen Hotelzug mit Salonwagen, Schlafwagen und Speisewagen und es war der erste transeuropäische Kontinentalexpress-Zug. Ab 1888 fuhr der Zug in einer damals sensationellen kurzen Zeit bis Konstantinopel, dem heutigen Istanbul.
Der Orient-Express wurde zum Inbegriff für Glanz und Glamour, Stil und Eleganz der oberen Zehntausend. Doch der schnellere Flugverkehr führte zum Abschied von einer Legende - am 19. Mai 1977 fuhr er zum letzten Mal. Der Name Orient Express wird für einige Nostalgiezüge genutzt, die mit alten, aber nicht unbedingt Original-Orient-Express Wagen touristische Fahrten unternehmen. Seit 2003 fährt der Pullman Orient Express nach einer kompletten Renovierung und Wiederherstellung nach alten Vorlagen wieder in seinem vollen Prunk in Tagesfahrten in Frankreich oder wird an Reisegruppen vermietet.
