Rockefeller Chapel is, by order, the tallest building on the campus of the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. It was meant by patron John D. Rockefeller to be the "central and dominant feature" of the campus. At 200.7 feet it remains the tallest and most monumentally imposing building on campus.

Designed by architect Bertram Goodhue between 1918 and 1924, and built between 1925 and 1928 without the use of structural steel, it contains about 70 integrated figural sculptures by sculptors Lee Lawrie and Ulric Ellerhusen, and interior work by mosaicist Hildreth Meiere. Today the chapel is used for ecumenical worship services, weddings, university convocations, guest speakers, musical programs, and occasional film screenings. It occupies most of a block and can seat 1700 people.

The woodcarvings that adorn the organ and South balcony were created by Alois Lang, a Master Woodcarver at the American Seating Co., and one of the artists responsible for bringing the medieval art of ecclesiastical carving back to life. His pieces in Rockefeller Chapel are carved from White Appalachian Oak.

The chapel contains the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Carillon and tower, a separate gift from John D. Rockefeller, Jr. in 1932 in honor of his mother. This 72-bell carillon is the second-largest carillon in the world by mass, after the carillon at Riverside Church on the Upper West Side of New York City, which Rockefeller Jr. also donated in honor of his mother (Wikipedia)

In 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 authorizing the internment of tens of thousands of American citizens and resident aliens of Japanese ancestry. Wendy Maruyama, a third generation Japanese-American and highly regarded artist/furniture maker based in San Diego, has created a compelling body of work examining this period in American history.

The exhibition includes three integrated parts: Executive Order 9066, the Tag Project, and a selection of historical artifacts. Executive Order 9066 involves a series of wall-mounted cabinets and sculptures referencing themes common in the internment camps. Maruyama's pieces integrate photo transfers based on the documentary photographs of Dorothea Lange and Toyo Miyatake in conjunction with materials such as barbed wire, tarpaper and domestic objects. The Tag Project consists of groupings of 120,000 recreated paper identification tags suspended from the ceiling. The suspended tags evoke a powerful sense of the humiliation endured by the internees and the sheer numbers of those displaced.

Maruyama's inclusion of actual objects owned or made by the internees brings an intensely personal awareness to the impact of Executive Order 9066. Included objects range from actual suitcases used by families during their relocation to an array of items made by internees from available materials in the camps.

New York Army National Guard Soldiers and their guests attend the annual Order of St. Barbara Dinner held by the 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery in New York, N.Y. on Dec. 7, 2018. At the annual dinner the battalion recognizes outstanding artillery Soldiers by presenting them with the Order of St. Barbara. St. Barbara is the traditonal patron saint of artillerymen. One guest at this year's dinner was World War II veteran Charles Brown who fought with the 258th Field Artillery in German in 1944 and 1945. Got a new Canon printer scanner so not used to it yet.

Automatic scans as a PDF file and you have to screenshot and individually crop those.

But found that they were too small and didn't look too good.

Also tried the Scan app on Windows 10, but with auto on the photos looked too red even after editing.

The best results was indidually scanning as JPEGS (had to change setting on scanner). And then edit them.

At one time all train stations had order boards on the roof -- a type of a semaphore signal to tell the train crew when to stop or when the line was clear. A few still have them just for display purposes, not (obviously) for signalling. Like the ones in Reading and Andover, the metal part of this order board is stamped "B&M Signal Department," and is probably original. The blades and lenses are almost certainly modern additions though, since they are in such perfect shape.

This the announcement that the forest service has posted at the first river crossing at Paradise. Note that this order forbids any access to the national forest along the river, with the threat of $5,000 or 6 months in stir! There was a report on the Santa Barbara Edhat a couple of days ago that *someone* was actually handing out citations. (Paradise, Santa Ynez River, 16 October 2013)

Maybe this nonsense is finally done? I've heard rumors that "They-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" have finally agreed to a settlement, at least until the new year. I hope the river opens again tomorrow, though I'm not holding my breath. And I found a backup - see my [Next] photo!
