Johnny Ramirez, radio operator, both with 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit's Command Element, prepare to launch the lofted communications balloon from the port side elevator of USS Kearsarge, Oct. 15, 2010. 26th MEU Marines first experimented with the lofted communications system during their 2008 deployment and have continued training with the system during their 2010 predeployment training period and deployment. The lofted communications system can extend the range of Marine Corps radio communications by hundreds of miles. 26th MEU is currently embarked aboard the ships of Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group operating in the 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
