The ICA launched an official poster for the International Year of Co-operatives in 2012 at the General Assembly in Mexico. The poster came out of an international competition, where co-operative creatives around the world came up with designs which expressed the virtues of the co-operative movement in the International Year.

Collage-No, a co-operative design agency based in Valencia, Spain are the winning designers of the ICA’s IYC Poster Competition and walked away with USD 3500 prize money.

The winning design was produced in a co-operative way, with each artist designing a different section using different techniques on a piece of paper folded into three, without being able to see what each other had created. They had no idea what the form would look like until they unfolded the piece of paper at the end of the process to reveal their ‘Exquisite Body’.

Colne and District Co-operative Society was established in 1886 through the merger of three seperate Societies at Parliament Street, Waterside, and Primer Bridge. The first President was Mr Joseph Chester, and the Committee consisted of Benjamin Marshall, John Duerden, William Dorrill, Isaac Heys, Edwin Scott, and W H Riding. Premises were erected at Church Street. By 1896 the Society had 9 grocery branches, 3 boot and shoe shops, and drapery, tailoring and coal departments. In 1897 a bakery, abbattoir, and joinery department were opened at Stanley Street. By 1906 they also had 9 butcher's shops. In 1903 Colne Hall was purchased and in 1907 all the departments were brought together in this building. In 1907 a branch was opened at Kelbrook, and in 1916 and 1921 Salterforth and Winewall Societies joined Colne. Further branches were opended at Laneshaw Bridge, Clare Avenue, Ruskin Avenue, and Harrrison Drive. In 1932 Earby Society amalgamated with Colne, and in 1935 Trawden joined them. In 1930 a boot and shoe repairing factory was opened at Albert Road premises, and extensions were made to the grocery warehouse in Brown Street East. 1930 also saw the purchase of the Royal Arcade which was opened in 1932. In 1935 half the share capital in Nelson CO-operative Society's laundry was taken up and it was renamed the Nelson, Colne and District Co-operative Laundries Association Ltd. In 1968 Colne and District Co-operative Society joined Pendle Co-operative Society which became part of the Co-operative Retail Services in 1971. Oldham Equitable Co Operative Society Ltd made a big statement with their building on Huddersfield Road. Completed in 1900 the design was by local architect Thomas Taylor. The building is asymmetric with this massive gable set well to the left of centre. Stained glass windows in the arched section above the carved relief name are at one end of a large dance hall. It is no longer in Co-operative occupation and much of the upper area is empty and in varying states of decay. It is listed Grade II.

Minister of Co-operative and Internal Trade Johnston Fernando assumes duties on Tuesday at the Ministry. Bandula Gunawardena, former Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardena and Ministry Secretary Anura Siriwardena were also present.

The Women’s Co-Operative Guild (WCG) was founded in 1883 as an auxiliary movement within the Co-Operative Wholesale Society (CWS) to promote and advocate for women’s social issues. It also provided educational and social activities for its members, as such the Guild quickly developed a wide support base. WCG campaigned on issues as maternity benefit, fairer wages, divorce reforms, peace movements as well involvement in politics. The Guild’s activities and membership reached a peak during the 1930’s with over 72,000 members across 1,513 branches throughout the British Isles. The Scottish Women’s Co-Operative Guild was established in 1892 and the first Irish branch in 1906.

The guild is still active today as the Co-Operative Women’s Guild but does not hold the same prominence as it used to. The WCG changed to their current name in 1963.

Can anyone please give an indication as to the age of this badge and whether it represents the Co-Operative Women's Guild or the Women's Co-Operative Guild?

Purple West Benhar Co-operative Society Ltd. 2/- token measuring 27mm diameter approx.Token appears to be plastic.

West Benhar Co-operative Society was established on 24th December 1885 and opened a branch in Harthill in 1886 and Blackridge in 1889. It joined West Lothian Co-operative Society in 1969, which became part of the Scottish Midland Co-operative Society Limited in 1982. One way to ensure the custom of members was to issue tokens for use in co-op branches. Most society had their own tokens, which could be purchased when funds were plentiful and used in exchange for goods, possibly towards the end of the week, when money was short.

The Co-Operative Group (Co-Op) is today the UK’s largest Mutual Business and its 5th largest food retailer. Rather than being run on the same business model as the major supermarkets, the Co-Op (like Credit Unions) is run for and by its members. Besides retail, the Co-Op’s family of businesses includes a retail pharmacy chain, funeral homes, independent travel business, legal services, own petrol stations, banking and insurance services. In total, they employ around 90,000 people in over 4,500 outlets across Britain.

The Co-Operative Wholesale Society (CWS) was formally established in 1863 and by 1867 also included the Co-Op Insurance Company Ltd followed by the Co-Operative Bank in 1872. Their first Congress was held in 1869 and represents the annual national conference of the UK Co-Op Movement. Congress venues are held at different locations and have issued specially designed badges for the events. In 1938 the venue was Bath that was attended by 1,944 delegates. On this basis, I presume around 2,000 of these badges were made.

Co-op department store, Eastbourne, late 1990s

Uploaded to coincide with Co-operatives Fortnight, 19th June-3rd July 2010

With the Baguette Express moving out of the Cowgate the old Kirkintilloch Co-operative Society's signage has been revealed with the renovation of the shop front. I don't recall a Co-op shop here so couldn't say what it sold. It's across the road from the Regent Centre behind the bus stop. I do remember there was a Lipton's store across the road from it with a 'Harry Worth' type mirror at the door where you could stand and lift one leg and arm and it looked like your were lifting both arms and legs at the same time! I hope the artwork is preserved under the new frontage.
