Old fashioned stores are getting rare those days! I like the way "they" catch sunny light when opened :-)
ODC2: OPEN
This is my first ODC as i have only just joined, the reason i chose to do this specific photo was because i thought that i should look at this challenge differently to something that 'opens'. So the way i interpreted this specific challenge was that i got my model for today, my brother, and i had him stand in an open spaced area that has no boundries which shows he is capable of doing anything. which is the beautiful open ocean. To show how he feels open and free to the surroundings, he has 'opened' his arms out.
i did find this challenge quite a challenge haha, i hope you like ;)
Enjoy the wonderful sun everyone :)

My local open farm was Revesby Farms, part of the Revesby Estate. It was a well run event, with great weather and the chance to see beyond the farm gate.

Lisa Strausfeld and James Nick Sears designed the illustrations for the cover story of the 3 December issue of The New York Times Magazine. The piece, titled "Open-Source Spying" is about whether blogs and wikis could be used by agencies like the C.I.A. and F.B.I. to combat terrorism. The visualizations create a three-dimensional space in which the physical relationship of actors, weapons and targets suggest their level of connection in an attack. An explanation about the visualizations, reprinted from the magazine:"A number of times each year, we find that our cover article is better suited to illustration than to photography (...) it could be that the substance of the reporting doesn't ultimately exist in the corporeal world - which is the case this week, with Clive Thompson's article on the intelligence community's quest to better utilize the tools of digital technology. Thompson, a contributing writer, reports regularly on high-tech matters. Lisa Strausfeld, who with James Nick Sears created the cover illustration and those accompanying Thompson's article, is a partner at the Pentagram design studio, where she heads a team specializing in digital-information projects ranging from software prototypes to computer-generated visualizations of the kind they created for us. Drawing on information maintained on a large counterterrorism database, the team created a pictorial equation in which terms that showed up most frequently in word searches interacted with one another. The resulting patterns are quite revealing, and quite beautiful."

Believe it or not, this is one of the windows in the school where I teach. It's a rather old building, and unfortunately needs some TLC. I did get quite a few odd looks from the lunch aides as I was snapping away! :o)

Last week hundreds of people came down to Backwoods Gallery to see off one of Melbourne’s most prolific street artists, James Reka. Before moving to Europe next month, he put on a pop up show that tied together all of the loose ends of his decade long career. Featuring a final fresh body of exhibited work alongside selected works from 2004 to 2006, fans came down in hordes to pay their final respects to one of Melbourne’s finest.
The new body of work was exclusively painted on rusted found objects such as spray cans, corrugated sheet metal and antique gold-mining pans that were found walking the train lines and salvaged from abandoned warehouses. Referencing his beginnings as a graffiti artist, the walls were strewn with scrunched butchers paper to create texture and act as an urban framework for the works. It was a process-driven concept, with Reka organically using every aspect of the spray cans to create artworks, from turning the paper labels into collages to painting the shell of the can itself.
In addition to this new body of work, Reka pulled a large collection of old works out of the vault from some of his original shows in the early to mid 2000s. Many of these canvases haven’t been seen for six or seven years and produced a huge, esteeming response from the crowd. Displaying works that have been painted over a decade apart, the audience could see Reka’s transformation from being known as having the strongest graffiti inspired line-work in Australia to his now renowned free-form canvases. Whether it is one of his iconic characters from the early 2000s or an incredibly intricate new work, Reka’s style is revered within the community and has continues to influence younger artists. There is no doubt it is commendable to already have such a strong retrospective of work and such a huge turn out of admirers in what is guaranteed to be a long and illustrious career.
Australia is losing one of their best to the bright lights and bigger walls of Europe, but there is no doubt that Reka’s legacy will continue both on the laneway and gallery walls for years to come. Gone, but not forgotten.
