At Columbus and Union. The books are blank if viewed from below, their words having fallen down and embedded into the sidewalk below. Later, they flashed on and off.
Sorting through some photos from last year and felt compelled to post this. A Feruginous Buzzard at Suffolk Owl Sanctuary
Mapperley Tunnel was worked from six construction shafts with three of them being retained for ventilation purposes. Today, only the southernmost shaft remains open as the northernmost shaft has been capped. This presumably happened when the tunnel was backfilled up to its midpoint. The central shaft is still technically open but so much rubbish has been thrown down it that only a small bit of light can make it down.
Therefore, other than the southern portal, this open shaft is the only point where natural light can enter the bore. The shaft is supported by a cast iron ring and signs of this tunnel's problem with water ingress are clearly visible at this point. This can be noted by both the presence of calcite running down the walls and the fact that almost all the bricks have lost their facings. If the bricks still had their facings, this section of the tunnel would be predominantly blue.
Today was Lothian Buses Doors Open Day 2012. There was a selection of vintage uses as well as a selection of Lothian Buses serving fleet. There were various tours around the depot, you could jump on the Hybrid buses and go through the bus wash. Take a trip on an old LRT vintage bus from 1964 round the depot or take a modern look through the depot using open top buses.
Today was a large improvement from previous years. There were far more buses and lots more to do!
Aluminium boei, tegenwoordig een zeldzame strandvondst. Kan mij niet heugen wanneer het de laatste keer was dat ik een aluminium boeitje op het strand vond. Inmiddels ben ik zuinig op degene die ik in de loop van de jaren verzameld heb.
Er is een grote verscheidenheid in het patroon op de aluminium boeitjes, van geheel glad tot enkele en meerdere ringen, van Noorse en Engelse makelij.
Een zoektocht op het internet leerde dat deze aluminium fishing floats in Amerika ook als een great decorative piece worden gezien, maar dan mag je daar wel 75 US dollar voor neerleggen.
Ben benieuwd wanneer dat in Nederland gebeurt.
Voor strandjutters is dit al jaren een 'great decorative piece' , maar dat idee moet natuurlijk eerst door een binnenhuisarchitect à la Bouvrie gejat worden om pas echt door de trendvolgers opgepakt te worden.
Ik herinner mij nog goed de eerste keer dat ik een aluminium boei vond. Toen ik op de lagere school zat, ging ik samen met vriendjes naar het strand om te jutten. We vonden toen geregeld kurken drijvers in de vloedlijn, en waren daar al erg blij mee. Een enkele keer een roestig ijzeren boeitje, maar nooit een aluminium boei. Dat waren de vondsten waar we op zaten te azen.
Topvondst was natuurlijk een reddingsband, maar van deze kwamen we een enkele keer een gebroken, gemaakt van kurk tegen.
In die tijd ging ik ook vaak met mijn oom Idzard Vonk op de brommer mee naar de Vliehors.
Hij zocht en vond op de Vliehors stenen werktuigen uit de prehistorie en ik vermaakte mij daar ondertussen ook.
Op een dag zag ik een aluminium boeitje liggen tussen de vloedlijn. Er werd gestopt en ik raapte mijn eerste aluminium boeitje op. Als een kind zo blij.
Nu, een 40 jaar later, kan ik nog steeds blij zijn met zo'n vondst. Niet zo euforisch als toen, maar toch.

Formed 2009 by Ei Wada and college fellows Kimitoshi Sato, Haruka Yoshida, Takumi Namba and Masaru Yoshida (bass), Open Reel Ensemble combines old school, reel-to-reel (“open reel”) tape deck and modern technology into a musical instrument.
The group roots in leader Wada’s mid-teen days, when he obtained a reel-to-reel tape deck about to be discarded from a radio station. After fooling around not knowing how to operate it, he, at one point, misperceived it as a musical instrument. By touching the reel and the exposed magnetic tape, he experienced the sense of “physically intervening in music and time”, and “playing the sound of the tape itself”. In 2008, Wada and Sato began developing a reel-to-reel tape deck with USB ports by incorporating a computer in order to explore the potential of a reel-to-reel tape deck as an instrument. Civilization critic Ivan Illich once said: “A convivial tool offers the greatest opportunity to enrich the environment with the fruit of its user’s vision.” ‘Convivial’ derives from a French word that means to live together in joy; Illich described convivial tools as “tools used apart from their industrial values”. Precisely, Open Reel Ensemble pursues an alternative value of an obsolete tool as a “convivial tool”.To manipulate a reel-to-reel tape deck as a musical instrument, a USB port was attached to enable the computer (and Max/MSP) to control. This allowed originally impossible performances, remote control, OSC interface, and sounds created by controlling the spin of the reel. In addition, they attached a sound oscillator that directly vibrates the tape. Visualizing a world of people jamming with this instrument, they envisioned this project as a band as well. They construct music as an ensemble by manipulating reel-to-reel tape decks with all their might and by using voices and sounds sampled on the spot, pursuing an alternative value of a forgotten media form, and
attempting to explore the world of “convivial tools”.
