Re:START, Christchurch - 2015

Possibly of the coolest stencils I've ever seen, it's Buzz Lightyear hiding in the Re:START Mall. The city is covered in very cool graffiti street art, but i laughed out loud when I saw this, so it won!

Smash Palace - 2015

Smash Palace is a classic New Zealand film, directed by Roger Donaldson, from 1981. It was set here at Horopito Motors, aka Smash Palace, in Horopito. The town was once busting, now nothing but the wreckers yard and a microbrewery are left.

And you may ask yourself

What is that beautiful house?

And you may ask yourself

Where does that highway go?

And you may ask yourself

Am I right?...Am I wrong?

And you may tell yourself

MY GOD!...WHAT HAVE I DONE?

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down

Letting the days go by/water flowing underground

Into the blue again/in the silent water

Under the rocks and stones/there is water underground.

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down

Letting the days go by/water flowing underground

Into the blue again/after the money's gone

Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

Smash Palace - 2015

Motor Holdings Trekka, New Zealands only homegrown production vehicle. It was designed and mass produced in Auckland 1966 to '73, with a total of about 2500 built. It is build with Skoda parts (because that's what the owner imported) and the outcome of the countries very strict vehicle import laws. They're not the most loved ute on the planet, they weren't very good, but are appreciated for the display of the Kiwi Can Do attitude. It's a rare find, and something I'd not have know about if I hadn't just read an article about it 2 days before.

Tiger Moth, Napier - 2015

This is one of the coolest things I've ever done - fly in a Tiger Moth Biplane. And what a awesome place Napier was to fly over, you're so low you can see the tree lined Marine Parade, and all the beautiful Art Deco buildings of the city. Unfortunately, it wasn't safe to take the camera up with me, so the experience is a memory - but what an amazing one.

The plane is made of canvas, and it putt-putt-putts away, low and slow. Built and designed by de Havilland, they were trainer planes from the 1930's, and weren't replaced until 1952. They saw service with many Air Forces around the world including the RAF and the Royal New Zealand Air Force too.

If you ever get the chance, do it!

This is completely natural, no digital manipulation - There was a polarizing filter on my lens that is it!

I wish there were not so much noise but I really have to up the ISO, this lens only goes to f5.6 & it was getting dark quick. If I would have had a tripod I would have used a longer shutter speed but I didn't so this is it for this time.

The sky was amazing & I was only hoping that I could catch what I saw with my camera, This is a good start :o)

The storm hit quick & the thunder & lightning was crazy, about 10 miles from us there were golf ball size hail reported.

Queenstown & Southern Lakes Highland Pipe Band - 2015

Early evening street entertainment, a traditional bagpipes band. Celtic culture is strong here in the south, they have their own tartans, and old and young stop to hear the sounds. Maybe it was the location, but this is the best pipes I've ever heard!

Wellington - 2015

Officially called the "Bucket Fountain" this is an iconic kinetic sculpture found in the pedestrianised part of Cuba Street. It has been here since 1969, and was designed by town planners Burren and Keen. However it was renovated by the council in 2003, and has come back 'splashier' - so even more water splashes out onto the pavement!

Quay Street, Auckland - 2015

Looking back at Auckland from Princes Wharf quayside, this may look like any other big city. But behind it lies a very unique country, with it's own World Famous brands, living dinosaurs, rare birds, endangered species, volcanos, history and heritage. Visit New Zealandif you can...

Te Papa, Wellington - 2015

Waharoa (gateway) in the entrance atrium, carved by Neke Kapua and his two sons (Tene and Eremiha) in 1906. Our guide said that the opening was narrow to stop other tribes entering the Marae (sacred place) with weapons.

Wellington - 2015

The Wellington Sculpture Trust has installed 27 public works of art around the city, with all but 4 being permanent pieces. This piece from 2006 drew me like a moth, I stood staring at it for ages mesmerised. The twisting neon represents handwriting, and are set out in a Fibonacci or Koru spiral.

Ahuriri - 2015

On Waghorne Street lies this brilliant Art Deco style Hotel. As mentioned before, the area was flattened by a huge quake in the early 1930 so, Napier and the surrounding towns were rebuild in this fantastic style.

This may very well be the last time in my life I see the corona of the sun with my own eyes. It may in fact be the last time I see a total eclipse with my own eyes.

I have no idea to these eventualities and anyone to speak with confidence that they do is foolish. The next total eclipse in the United States is on April 8, 2024. It will also cut across most of the United States though not nearly through as dry of locations as this. Early April weather in the central and eastern United States? Could be nice, could be a late season blizzard, could be a Nor'Easter, could be a tornado outbreak. Could be just fine.

I would also like to chase the eclipse in Iceland, August 12, 2026. There has never been nor shall there ever be a guarantee about the quality of weather in Iceland though if the eclipse doesn't work out, you're still right there in Iceland. Also on August 12, 2026, I will be 43 years old. What will change between now and then? Will I be able to travel then? What will life be like? Will I be alive? Will the bombs have fallen by then or a bus taken me out when I walk downtown to work?

I could confidently declare myself an eclipse chaser and prepare for my next, and one track of me will certainly do just that. I won't kid myself though that things change, things get in the way, things get worse sometimes and maybe this was it... and if it was I am infinitely grateful that it all worked out just this once.

Chinese Theatre, Hollywood, 1931

Quite worth a look Large and Dark if you have a moment.

Taken on the night of travel disruption but before I knew the extent of the chaos... a shot of the glass just outside the northern end of St Pancras (the 'new bit') which curves rather nicely towards one of the entrances.

I'm still unsure about the 'northern add on new bit' to St Pancras - it's rather fine inside, and I love the architecture, but it still seems an uneasy bedfellow when positioned right up against the original trainshed. The contrast of the huge arch of cast iron, now beautifully restored, against the flat roof of the extension doesn't feel prudent... but then again, an extension which aped the original would be positively grim so I struggle to see what alternatives there were.

It had been raining on the evening in question - as I'm sure you can tell from the shot - and I was listening to the seminal 80's beat combo Talking Heads, specifically the soundtrack from Stop Making Sense. The track "Once in a lifetime" was playing... always a joy, but the lyrics are somewhat intractable (e.g remove the water at the bottom of the ocean). A rare chance to use them as a title.... although long term acolytes of APS may recall another shot with a title taken from the same song.

Enjoy

Horned Grebe

Podiceps auritus

The waters around the cannery at Monterey Bay were full of awesome birds - Brandt's and Pelagic Cormorants, Surt Scoter, Eared Grebe and this stunningly handsome Horned Grebe. I knew it was going to be a nice shot but this turned out better than I could have hoped. Slightly cropped to create a widescreen shot.

An #amazing site to see at #night. Few people make the effort to visit #antelopecanyon after dark to see the #mystery in this #wonderland . Everyone should visit #onceinalifetime. Shot with a Nikon D850, 4s, f/3.2 ISO 2500 24mm.

Great breaking, sadly the autofocus started to focus and I missed some cool shoots.

My once in a lifetime photo :)

Not counting some more recent ops for me in person it has been two years since I've documented anything in daylight on CSX's Lehigh Spur. Yes I've seen shots from all over in daylight but I am speaking with respect to catching things "in person". What's even more intriguing is getting CSX and FEC power together in one shot, a shot that is not easy to get except in Jacksonville. What helps the nostalgic aspect of it is that in this frame the CSX power is solid YN2 and the FEC unit is in the "Going Places in Florida" livery.

Brecon St, Queenstown - 2015

Queenstown is hilly place, it's a resort in summer and winter, day or night.

It has been three weeks since my last photo of this Harvard's Agave (Agave havardiana). The peach colored blossoms have boomed into helios-green flowers on a tall, branched spike up to 23 feet (7 m) high. The plant has spent its lifetime saving up energy to send up this "death bloom", a single flowering stalk that blooms before it dies. It blooms after 20 to 40 years.

Mission Estate Winery, Napier - 2015

The oldest winery in New Zealand, established by French Missionaries in 1851, and is renown for some of the finest wines in the country. This La Grande Maison, or Big House, was built in 1880, and moved up hill due to floods in 1910.

Wellington - 2015

Cafe De Luxe on Kent Terrace at the Embassy Theatre. The theatre building was built in 1924, and is the New Zealand equivalent of a Listed Building. The cafe name comes from the original theatre name; De Luxe Cinema, however it has been known as Embassy Theatre since 1945!

Wellington - 2015

This little bit of Oriental Bay Parade reminded me of home. Although these are small boat sheds, we have similar looking brightly coloured beach chalets at home.

Zealandia - 2015

The eco-sanctuary is based in a valley, and the lakes used to be reservoirs for the city. The valley used to be dense forest and, despite being burnt for farming in the mid-1800s, is returning to what it was. The site is a 10 min (free) bus ride from the iSite centre in the middle of Wellington, so for the chance to see something completely unique it's easy worth it. There are many paths and walks to choose, the shortest is about 2 hours, but much more time is needed to fully enjoy the sights, sounds, creatures, flora, and fauna of the area.

This is taken looking back down the lower valley from the Upper Dam.

Tongariro Alpine Crossing - 2015

It was a very early start, and this is what lay ahead of us for the day; the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing. It's a 19.4km (12 mile) walk over an active volcanic area, in the shadows of Mt. Doom (Mount Ngauruhoe), and climbing about 1000m in elevation. The trek takes about 8hrs, the terrain varies, and there are only toilets at the start and end. The National Park is also a Dual World Heritage Area - obey the signage!
