This image was produced from a series of original negatives used to promote the French Fleet of that era. Most of the negatives in this collection received retouching modifications for contemporary postcard or offset printing processes. The retouching was carried out to facilitate or improve the negatives tonal range for the printing process. Some enhancements such as fake clouds, waves, smoke and highlights might still be seen in this reproduction from those negatives.

The Rainbow Box, by Designer/illustrator Norman Laliberté and author Joseph Pintauro.
This product is in mint condition, with possible exception of box itself which is still amazing, but with a sticker pull and hard to notice edge wear, but barely worn at all. Interior, books and poster appear brand new.
Produced in limited edition of 15,000, this consists of the box itself, four books—A Box of Sun, The Peace Box, The Rabbit Box and The Magic Box plus “The Peace Poster”, which says "Make the World Attractive to the Rest of the Universe" - which honors in art and poetry the four seasons plus the times of life. The idea was to present these four different subjects in individual books that were then put together in as colorful and as exciting a manner as the books themselves were. The concept of the cube represented the multifaceted views of time and life as presented within the books. To produce so many pages of color in a special package at a minimal price required the integration of the efforts of the poet, the artist and the printer to get maximum benefit at minimal dollar cost.
Special Features: The box itself was manufactured by The Box Shop, New Haven, Connecticut, who also assembled the pieces into the cubes and manufactured the color space interiors.

Having fun with a photo I took at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve last October.
It all started when I found a tutorial on how to create a scalloped edged frame.
First, I processed the original photo with Photoshop's HDR image adjustment. The image was then processed with Photoshop's dry brush filter. The colors were bumped up in intensity, especially yellows and reds.
I added an antiqued postcard border and old-style text, and processed the whole image area (excluding border) with a Photoshop grain texture filter to make it look like offset printing.

Printing services and high quality printing materials were one of the key factors when we designed and pre-press for our clients. We have been cooperating with Control P printing house for a great number of years and there is a good reason for that; they deliver one of the best printing qualities in this part of Balkans. Over the years they have proven to be one of the rare printing houses that can deliver even the most complex types of printing. We tend to be demanding and look for even the tiniest errors when we control the printing process and we can say with confidence that Control P has given us the best printing service than any other printing house we came in contact with.
We never had any problems with Control P during the printing services for our clients unlike other printing houses that unfortunately, have no professional attitude and perfect final product. We always consult and point our clients that use our graphic design services to Control P. One of the basic reasons is that consistent quality no matter what size of the job is. We tend to provide maximum service quality, as our professional attitude and business codex point out and when we direct our clients to Control P we are positive that the design that we have made will be printed just the way we wanted, perfectly.
We have used the services of Control P printing house for over 80% of our projects that demanded printed material. A couple of those clients are: United Nations, Ergomade, HPD, Fertico, Fitofert, Centar Cad, Green Line, G&T Fruits, Vulkan AD, Goldys, RED BULL, Maplin, Tami Trade...

Offset printing is a service that Control P delivers on a very high level. Offset is a printing procedure of multiplication where the pressure is applied on the printing machine to reflect the painted image from the original printing form to the surface by using rubber base. Offset print provides high quality reproduction of multicolor originals. It also allows the use of multicolor printing on a wide range of materials. Offset printing has a range of techniques when printing: even, high and deep indirect print. The technique of even offset printing is one of the most widespread techniques in the world; it covers almost 85% of printing services. By using this technique we can print even the most difficult graphical solutions on a material such as:
Flyers, brochures, posters, memos, books, notes, catalogs, tags, magazines, calendars, maps, folders, cards, invitations …

The advantages of offset printing regarding to other methods are:
- High quality of the image. Offset print gives sharp and clean images.
- Easy and fast production of the printing plates
- Longer life span of printing plates for Glossary Link printing because there is no direct contact between the plate and the printable surface. Adequately developed plates can last over one million printing presses if the optimized colors are applied.
- Offset printing is one of the cheapest way to produce a high quality print for commercial usage when doing a larger amount of printing material.
With blindruck printing we can achieve a 3d effect.
With punching we can achieve any shape that we want that cannot be cut by a knife. We use it when we design folders, labels, catalogs, packages, boxes or any other item that has random different shapes.
With plastification we apply a thin layer of PVC (glossy or matte) on a printing material. This is done so that it can provide protection and longer life span of the item and a certain visual effect is achieved.
UV lacquer or offset lacquer are one of those finishing touches that make a certain segment of the print stand out in an attractive way.
Control P printing house was founded in 2003 in Nis, Serbia
They started working with low quantity prints and pre-press. Now they are known as the pioneers of big format print in Nis.
- 2004 they bought the first 152cm width plotter, ENCAD NOVA JET 880
- 2007 the first cutter-plotter was purchased and that made it the only one in Nis
- 2008 they made a great leap forward in digital printing by buying first digital printer, OLYMPIA class.
- 2011 they bought another top class digital printer , Konica – Minolta Bizhub Pro. Since they were involved a lot in industry print for high formats they bought another printer StarJet 2502 with 250cm width.
In the meantime the company expands and has over 1000 companies on their client list and seven highly qualified employees.

Brooklyn photographer Jason Kempin had this business card printed, and boy is it lovely. The custom square shape makes it unique, and Pantone black soy inks printed on 100% recycled chipboard is always a great, classic combination.

Singing choruses of Solidarity Forever, 26 striking pressmen at the Washington Post are arrested at the AFL-CIO headquarters on 16th Street in Washington, D.C. February 20, 1976 after they sought a stronger commitment from labor chief George Meany to settle the strike.
The pressmen were permitted to stay in the building until closing. Meany, who was in Florida at the time, sent word that if they left the building, he would issue a new statement but would not give in to “pressure.”
The pressmen refused the offer and Meany ordered them arrested at about 7:15 p.m. after the building closed to the public.
According to the Washington Post, as the first men were placed under arrest, James Dugan, president of the striking union, Local No. 6 shouted: “this is what the AFL-CIO is all about.”
About 40 supporters gathered outside the AFL-CIO building to give encouragement to the pressmen.
Labor relations between the Post and its unions had been deteriorating for several years (see flic.kr/s/aHsjtYXDE7) as the Post management began aggressively preparing for a confrontation with the pressmen’s union. From 1973-75, the Post management openly trained dozens of non-union employees on how to running printing presses and other production jobs.
The strength of the unions was further undercut by advances in technology that made new offset printing and computer typesetting possible (eliminating much of the skills of pressmen, printers and photoengravers). The Post overtly made plans to open new offset printing plants in Maryland and Virginia.
The craft unions at the newspaper were also predominantly composed of older, white males during a time when African Americans and women were pushing to break into skilled occupations.
When the strike occurred October 1, some pressmen sought to undercut the Post’s advantages by sabotaging the Post printing presses. A shop supervisor was also assaulted during first minutes of the strike. Some Newspaper Guild members (reporters and editors) who crossed the pressmen’s picket lines were also physically accosted.
The newspaper was forced to suspend publication, but published an edition October 3rd using offset presses at other facilities. Helicopters were used to ferry key workers to the Post headquarters and to send copy to the outside printing plants.
Two other unions called strikes of their own and the other craft unions honored picket lines. The leadership of the Newspaper Guild (reporters and editors) issued statements in support of the strike but the violence isolated the pressmen’s union in the community.
The Newspaper Guild members defied their leadership and voted to withhold support of the strike and cross picket lines. The local AFL-CIO labor council voted to launch a boycott against the Post and stickers reading “No Grapes, No Lettuce, No Post” (also refering to the Farmworkers boycotts) were widely distributed throughout the Washington, DC area.
Many businesses initially shifted their advertising to the rival Washington Star. However, as the Post began to restore the publication to its pre-strike condition, businesses began to return to the Post. The pressmen responded by setting up picket lines outside of advertisers who returned to the Post.
The Post management also began exploiting charges of discrimination against the pressmen’s union. A quick settlement was reached with the predominantly African-American Washington Printing Specialties and Paper Products Union 449, which represented paper handlers and press room general workers.
A grand jury investigation into the violence cast a cloud over the strike. The Post hired permanent replacements—mostly African Americans and women--for the pressmen and some members of other unions began drifting back to work.
On February, 17th the Mailers union (who sort and bundle the newspapers) reached an agreement with the Post and returned to work along with the printers union (those who set the type)—representing about half of the 1,400 craft union workers. Most of the other unions and their members followed shortly thereafter and the strike was essentially lost at this point.
The U.S. Attorney obtained indictments against 15 pressmen. On the one year anniversary of the strike, close to 1,000 pressmen and their supporters rallied at McPherson Square and marched to the Post building where they burned Katherine Graham in effigy (see flic.kr/s/aHsju9eWWj). On May 20, 1977, fourteen pressmen were given sentences that ranged from fines to one year in jail.
Local 6 ceased to exist largely as a result of the strike followed by the folding of the Washington Star newspaper in 1981. In 2005 the national body, by then renamed Graphic Communications International Union, merged with the Teamsters. The Washington Post continues to publish.

UPDATE: 21 June 2011: Much to my surprise, the documentary filmmaker Errol Morris used this photo in a bibliographic footnote / aside part three of his New York Times piece, Did My Brother Invent E-Mail With Tom Van Vleck?. The footnote follows, but the whole series is fascinating and well worth reading:
[18] Van Vleck wrote to me, “We wrote a lot of memos during CTSS and Multics development. The general approach was to write in longhand and ask a secretary to type it up on a mimeograph stencil. The mimeo documents would be circulated for comments. When a document was approved, the secretaries would retype it and send it out for (2 sided) offset printing at the MIT printing plant (2 week turnaround). MSPM sections were typed on special typewriters called Flexowriters that also recorded their output on paper tape.”
Project MAC had an early Xerox machine but it was not for use by random programmers. It was kept in the room where the Felowriter operators worked, and professors could ask for things to be Xeroxed. It was not used casually because (1) it was prone to jam and eat input documents. (2) only a trained “key operator” could fix jams without breaking it. (3) sometimes these jams led to fires (4) it was expensive. When Xerox technology and prices improved, it was approved for memos if they were one side of one page and could be done in a day. Shorter memos ensued.”
Some of the early manuals have now actually become museum exhibits.

When Will Bryant and Mark Menjivar join forces, terrific things happen. Terrific chipboard things, to be specific.
Will and Mark worked together to create this identity system for the youth advocacy arm of Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA). Mark works with TRLA to offer aid to youth experiencing homelessness. He got in touch with Will to help him create a series of print items that could be at once beautiful, useful and durable. From that collaboration came three print pieces: a business card, a pocket postcard, and a Scout Book with custom-printed interiors that acts as a Youth Rights Booklet. Will also did the lettering and design for the snazzy TRLA Youth website. Chipboard internet? We’re into it.
In addition to being a chance to create a set of fun printed pieces, Will looks at this collaboration as an opportunity to help out: ”Enabling youth [with] the opportunity to better their circumstances is huge! Most of the kids come from rough backgrounds, so having access to this knowledge empowers them and provides hope for the future,” he told us. “It’s a blessing to be involved with a project that does this.”
Last week we sent a bunch of Scout Books to SXSW in Texas with @rohdesign and @austinkleon for their Visual Notetaking 101 Panel.
These guys take awesome notes, and they designed this pocket notebook to offer you a chance to create beautifully illustrated notes, too. The cover features illustration exercises for better notetaking.
Count yourself lucky if you were at the panel and received one of these! They ran out right away! Collectors item.
