“Well, what shall we play now, gentleman? Happy Families?” – Mr. Yates the cardsharp in the Titanic’s smoking room from the 1958 film “A Night to Remember”, based on Walter Lord’s 1955 non-fiction book of the same title.
The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" the 29th of August is "game pieces", which was proposed by me. I recently acquired a wonderful pack of "Black Peter" printed by Ferdinand Piatnik & Sons in Vienna in the early 1950s. I have been wanting to use them for a photograph, and they seemed perfect for the theme this week. I have also included some ivory faced dominoes from the Eighteenth Century or very early Nineteenth Century, some Eighteenth Century carved ivory dice, pieces from my Grandfather’s Draughts set which I inherited from him when he died, some ebony and rosewood French wooden game chips from the early Nineteenth Century which are housed in their original carved rosewood "Puce" (French for "chip") box at the bottom of the image and some Bakelite chips from several 1920s games of mine in my collection. All the pieces are displayed on my Grandfather’s handmade marquetry chessboard. I hope that you like my choice for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile!
"Black Peter" is a European version of the game "Old maid", Known as "Schwarzer Peter" in German, it was one of the most popular children's card games for generations, reaching its zenith in the 1950s and 60s. The idea of the game is to draw cards and make pairs. This deck has images of birds, bears, rabbits, elephants, frogs, dogs and many more animals besides. Each card identifies its pair by a symbol appearing in the top left-hand corner. However, if you have Black Peter (in this case a grumpy and naughty black cat) in your hand at the end of the game, you have unfortunately had bad luck and lose. This pack, illustrated by Willy Mayrl is still being produced today.
Wiener Spielkartenfabrik Ferd. Piatnik & Söhne, commonly referred to as Piatnik, is an Austrian playing card and board game manufacturing company based in Vienna. The company was founded in 1824 by the card manufacturer Anton Moser (1784–1842) in Vienna's 7th district. Upon his death, his professional colleague the Hungarian-born Ferdinand Piatnik (1819–1885) took over in 1843, marrying Moser's widow a few years later. Piatnik's three sons joined the ranks in 1882 adding their names to their father's company name. Piatnik continued to expand and in 1899 bought the playing card manufacturer, Ritter & Cie in Prague. As early as 1923 Piatnik received an 'irrevocable' national award and thus the right to use the Austrian coat of arms in its business in perpetuity. In 1939, the Viennese parent company was incorporated into the family limited partnership Wiener Spielkartenfabrik Ferd. Piatnik & Sons. After the war, multi-colour offset printing was introduced in 1951. In 1956, the playing card factory expanded its range to include board games, and puzzles have also been produced since 1966. Piatnik Wien has since established itself as a major business, having sold twenty-five million packs of cards (including Tarot, Tarock, Bridge, Préférence, Schnapsen, Double German and French packs), one million puzzles and one million board games (such as Activity, Tick Tack Bumm, Abalone, Pass the Pigs and Scrabble) in over seventy two countries. The firm offers more than two hundred social and family games and one thousand play card pack variants.
These rather worn French dominoes that has come into my possession have earned each and every chip, dint and scratch they have, as they were made by hand in the late Eighteenth or very early Nineteenth Century. The black base layer is made of ebonised wood, whilst the top, white pieces, are ivory - now yellowed with age - with the circular grooves inked in black paint. The two layers are affixed together with a silver rivet in the centre of each piece.
The draughts set is a British set belonging to my Grandfather, who bought them from Hamley’s Toy Shop in Regent Street in London in 1933. He and I used this set many times to play draughts on his hand made chessboard.
The chessboard was made by my Grandfather, a skilful and creative man, in 1952. Two chess sets, a draughts set and three chess boards made by my Grandfather were bequeathed to me as part of his estate when he died.

CMYK stands for C yan, M agenta, Y ellow, and B lack
These are the four colors of ink used in the traditional method of printing hardcopies of images, called offset printing. The three colors, plus black, roughly correspond to the primary colors, from which can be mixed colors across the visible spectrum. CMYK is a color mixing system that depends on chemical pigments to achieve the desired hues.
Luke Ramsey is awesome. He creates beautiful, intricate pieces of artwork that include zines, murals, paintings and prints. He also runs Islands Fold, an independent publisher and artist residency in B.C., Canada.
We ran into Luke last summer at the Portland Zine Symposium, and saw him sketching in a Scout Book! Quickly gave him another, and within weeks he had filled it up and sent us images. At long last, here is what the fantastic Luke Ramsey did with the 32 grid pages of a Scout Book.
Awesome! Thanks, Luke.

Fun, funky work from Amy Martino! Amy is a NYC based graphic designer and illustrator, and her bright, textured work has us swooning.
She dressed this Scout Book up in ways we've never seen! Hot pink and neon green paper? Yes, please.
Oh yes, and metallic gold. Don't forget about the metallic gold.

As happens every fall, I’ve got calendars for sale! Go to www.budsalaskaphotos.com to order, or if you’re in Fairbanks just drop me a line and we can meet to deliver and avoid the mailing cost…and my time in line at the post office.
The calendars are printed on heavy weight glossy paper with 4 color offset printing (the same method used by magazines). They are 8.5 x 11 inches with a hole for hanging. We very excited that he took the time to fill this Scout Book so expertly with collage work. We even see some letterpress bits and pieces in there!

I was charmed by the offset printing on this old barn. I've seen lots of "mail pouch" barns in Pennsylvania, but this was the first printed like this one.

Side of an old building on Broadway that is apparently doomed to make way for an expanded Skytrain station. I didn't know that when I took this photo; just have always liked these signs but never happened past when the parking lot was empty before.
I photoshopped out a couple of "modern" parking signs from the brown lower wall.

The calendars are 8.5 x 11 inches printed with 4 color offset printing that provides excellent color and resolution, the same as is used for most magazines.

"Chandler & Price was founded in 1881 in Cleveland, Ohio, by Harrison T. Chandler and William H. Price. They manufactured machinery for printers including a series of hand-fed platen jobbing presses, as well as an automatic feeder for these presses (the Rice Feeder), paper cutters, book presses, and assorted equipment. Despite dominating the industry in the 1930s, by the 1950s the offset printing industry had eclipsed the world of movable type printing, and only Chandler & Price and Brandtjen and Kluge continued to make open platen (Gordon) presses. Chandler & Price ceased production of presses in 1964." Wikipedia
Yesterday at my print shop (offset printing) a retired couple from the neighborhood saw some photographic prints of mine and told me about this Holiday display they setup in their house but have never got any good photos. Both of us thought HDR might capture it... and it did. These are just the 1st drafts for them to select one for me to workup a little better.
Colombian master printers prepare the ancient letterpress machines for a new load in the print shop in Cali, Colombia. Letterpress printing, invented by Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th century, remained the primary way to print and distribute information until the second half of the 20th century. The process of letterpress printing consists of composing movable types into the bed of a press, inking it, and pressing paper against it to create an impression. Nowadays, due to the offset printing expansion, there are few commercial print shops in the world keeping this traditional craftsmanship alive. © Jan Sochor Photography

A wonderful, tipped in advert from the inner back cover of the March 1925 edition of the German book, publishing & print industry magazine the "Deutscher Buch - und Steindrucker". This double sided sheet is for the Colour Ink manufacturer's Gebr. Hartmann of Ammendorf - Chemische Fabrik Halle-Ammendorf, Druckfarbenfabriken in Ammendorf bei Halle, Saale.
The advert is entitled "Wir allein liefern Konzentrafarben für offsetdruck." - loosely translated as "We alone supply concentrate inks for offset printing." It shows three packaging designs - the type of design and printing that such inks could be put to good use for. It shows the designer as "Stoss, Bonn".
The back of the sheet is in some remarkable lettering or typeface and reads "Have you already tried our tried and tested offset inks?".
It certainly is a colourful advert for a colourful trade.

It’s been a bit of a rough year for travel, but I’ve put together my 2021 calendar and it’s now ready for sale. Hopefully I can get support from folks online as the location of many past sales, the Christmas Bazaars are all on hold due to the virus, so I’ll be depending on sales to folks who follow my flickr page of my travels in Alaska, so I really appreciate your support this year. As before it is printed in 4 color offset printing that provides vivid color and high resolution. I charge $15 + SH for one or $130+SH for an order of 10. To order please go to my web site WWW.budsalaskaphotos.com. A few people have had an issue where the web page comes up with last year’s calendar, if so simply click on refresh and it’ll bring up the current website as well as a different way to look at photos for anyone who desires prints.

I believe this to be the "Printer's Proof" that was used as the gold standard for comparison purposes when offset printing any subsequent copies of the 21'x10' "Size A" billboard version. Look at the cross hair markings, the hand written symbol in the bottom right corner and the mostly trimmed off color scale at the top right. Another clue is that the line of copyright text in the bottom right corner is only printed on the billboard size, not the smaller posters. Another difference here is the presence of a pale green background inside the rainbow in the billboard version that is white in the smaller 34"x21" "Size C" posters.
This treasure came from the estate of a 7Up executive and was behind glass in a sealed frame, probably since it was acquired by him in 1969. It is therefore in nearly perfect New Old Stock (NOS) MINT CONDITION!!! This is the 3rd and final acquisition from the same source. The "Visit Un-Derland" (also by Kim Whitesides) has even more printer's proof markings. The 3rd "Turn Un" by Pat Dypold was significantly trimmed during framing to just the central image, but based on what I've seen from this source, it was also likely a printer's proof. Note: The "Turn Un" Printer's Proof is the ONLY KNOWN COMPLETE COPY of that image in ANY SIZE.
The only repair needed was 2 very small pieces of acid-free scrapbooking tape behind the top left corner. Some of the mat board was stuck to the paper 48 years ago. Only the central image was visible when I purchased it. The rest was a pleasant bonus/surprise when the glossy paper was removed from behind the mat board and glass.
Kim Whitesides's signature* is on the right side, just above the first "Un". * = None of the signatures on the 7Up posters or billboards are hand written. They are on the original artwork only.
My 3 companion Size "A" billboard versions are the 3rd 21'x10' 7Up UnCola billboard image to be issued in 1969 to introduce the hugely successful "The UnCola" ad campaign to America. The rainlap diagram on the back lists this as [Design] DES 69-3 - "Un & Un Is Too" (2 guitar players).
There are 4 images by Kim Whitesides for the 7Up UnCola ad campaign that I'm aware of. The most common is this "Un & Un Is Too" from 1969. My collection includes 2 billboards and some smaller posters of this image. More can be seen on-line being offered for sale.

There are at least 53 billboard images in the entire body of work spanning from 1969 until the mid-1970's. Only up-and-coming artists of the day were invited to submit designs which were then judged by the client. The J. Walter Thompson [advertising] Co. in Chicago orchestrated the entire ad campaign.
Twin copies of the billboard version were up BEFORE Woodstock in mid-August of 1969!

Tipped into the Printing Review for Spring 1932 is this well printed four page advert supplement using Tullis Russell's "Mellotex" paper that was intended as a competatively priced, quality paper for offset printing. The supplement uses various illustrations and type to display the types of use the paper could be put to for advertising and publicity work. The cover is very much in the contemporary style whilst the illustrations inside are very typical of much early 1930s work.
Tullis Russell Co Ltd were a major paper manufacturer whose range included many specialist types of paper for a wide variety of uses. The company's origins date back to 1809 when Robert Tullis acquired the Leven Mill in Markinch, Fife, that had been constructed in 1804. Tullis later constructed the adjacent Auchmuty Mill and acquired the Rothes Mill. By 1875 the company had moved into the coated paper business, based at Bollington in Cheshire. After 1947 a trust was set up by the Tullis family and over the proceeding decades the company moved into employee ownship and is still in business although the Scottish mills have been closed.

This is the ONLY KNOWN HARD COPY of this image in a small poster size. 30" x 16.25". Likewise, my 21' x 10' Size "A" billboard version is also the ONLY KNOWN COPY in that gigantic size.
I believe this to be the "Printer's Proof" that was used as the gold standard for comparison purposes when offset printing any subsequent copies of the 21'x10' "Size A" billboard version. Look at the cross hair markings, the hand written notes for the 4 different CMYK colors and the color scale at the top. In this case, there are no other smaller posters to compare with.
This treasure came from the estate of a 7Up executive and was behind glass in a sealed frame, probably since it was acquired by him in 1969. It is therefore in nearly perfect New Old Stock (NOS) MINT CONDITION!!! This is the 2nd acquisition from the same source. The "Un & Un Is Too" (also by Kim Whitesides) has less printer's proof markings, but there was more trimming at the top. The 3rd "Turn Un" by Pat Dypold was significantly trimmed during framing to just the central image, but based on what I've seen from this source, it was also likely a printer's proof.
The only repair needed was a 1.5" piece of acid-free scrapbooking tape behind the top left corner to repair a short rip suffered during shipping due to inadequate protection (I asked the seller to pull it from the frame that I had no interest in). The blotch in the upper right corner is some of the mat board that I have not taken the time to remove just yet. Only the image was visible when I purchased it. The rest was a pleasant bonus/surprise when the glossy paper was removed from behind the mat board & glass.
Kim Whitesides's signature* is on the left side of the center 7Up circle. * = None of the signatures on the 7Up posters or billboards are hand written. They are on the original artwork only.
Refer to my other recent post showing a scale model of this billboard image. The JPG image used to print the color insert in the scale model graciously came from the artist himself prior to this original poster being acquired.

My companion Size "A" billboard version is the 4th 21'x10' 7Up UnCola billboard to be displayed in 1969 to introduce the hugely successful "The UnCola" ad campaign to America. The rainlap diagram on the back lists this as [Design] DES 69-4, C-2691. Kim Whitesides also illustrated DES-3 - "Un & Un Is Too" (2 guitar players), along with 2 others that I'm still trying to locate or acquire as of now.

Contact me if you have a serious interest in acquiring any of my dozen or so duplicate billboards. I'm also interested in trades that will complete my collection.
My prices would be FAR more reasonable and come with in-depth accurate research compared to my $15,000 (linen backed) & $12,500 competition:

There are at least 53 billboard images in the entire body of work spanning from 1969 until the mid-1970's. Only up-and-coming artists of the day were invited to submit designs which were then judged by the client. The J. Walter Thompson [advertising] Co. in Chicago orchestrated the entire ad campaign.
Twin copies of the billboard version were up BEFORE Woodstock in mid-August of 1969!
This image appears to be a slender girl dancing or tiptoeing through the tulips which are common in many of Whiteside illustrations. This also follows falsetto voiced Tiny Tim's "Tiptoe Through The Tulips" done in 1968.

A Colombian master printer works on the ancient letterpress machine in the print shop in Cali, Colombia.
Alright, it is with some satisfaction, relief and catharsis that I announce that my latest (and fourth...or fifth... or sixth depending on how you count) book is finished and public up on Blurb. I would link to it, but that is a no-no. So if you hop over to my profile it has links to all four of my Blurb books, as well as other stuff. Anyway, if your interest takes you, that is where to go.
In other related news, I have also secured the first showing of the work. I will be hanging a twenty piece selection (that is two images per bridge) at the City Club of Portland. No, there will not be an opening. Yes, they will keep open office hours should you care to go see it. And yes, this show will have legs and I will certainly be looking to have it up at least one other time later this year. I will post more info on the City Club and its hours come next week once the show is hung. I am pretty happy to be hanging there though. They are a pretty neat organization, having been around Portland for a very long time. They organize a variety of citizen-led research and other projects with the goal of improving Portland, including among other things, helping with the founding of Forest Park. So I am pleased with the quality of the audience this show will receive there. But I can talk about that a bit more later too.
What I wanted to talk a bit about right now was the process of making a book, or perhaps the process of working in a series, or both. First off, I have printed books three different ways, once through Lulu using a PDF I made myself. I don't show anyone that book and own the only copy in existence that I know of. Then I had a book printed for me by a company called GISI here in Portland. They basically used that book for propaganda for their better clients and paid me in boxes of books for myself. They did a fine job with it, almost too fine as it looked more like a serious book than a piece of advertisement for them. Years later, I still have people tell me that they have seen that pinhole book pop up here and there.
Eventually I moved to Blurb, where I have now made four books mostly on my own. Blurb is a print-on-demand service, like many others out there. Unlike many others out there, it is arguably the best at it. They have an excellent blend of print quality, design flexibility and marketing and promotional tools. If I chose to, I really would not have a hard time saying only good things about them. But I will be fair and offer up some of their weaknesses as well as strengths for those thinking about using them.
Advice #1. Print on the premium paper. Not much more expensive, but significant gain in print quality. As I said, their print quality is excellent. My eye still is more critical than their quality and yes, they leave room for improvement, especially compared to offset printing. But still, they are quite excellent. That room for improvement decreases noticeably with the use of premium paper.
Advice #2. Don't expect Blurb to make you rich. The trade off for the print-on-demand flexibility is much higher per book costs. This book costs me $48 to print for a 100 page book. How much can I reasonably mark that up? I currently have it set for $10 and at $58 the book is starting to seem a bit expensive to me. I did not make this book to sell it. I made it to scratch that creative itch that bugs me every year or so. So printing through Blurb is not an economical way of going if you are looking to become a photography book seller. Nonetheless, they do have a storefront to which you can direct others and they can buy direct from Blurb. So that is handy. They also give you a nifty preview widget to imbed all over the place, at least on-line. My profile has examples of mine.
Advice #3. If you make it, buy it. Once uploaded to Blurb you have to buy a copy of the book within 15 days or they delete, figuring you have moved on. But once you buy a copy, it is permanent.
Advice #4. You are probably a horrible graphic designer. Face it, you are a photographer right? Sure, some of you have graphic design backgrounds, and you will do fine. But most of you reading this don't. Just like how many photographers are amazed when they first witness the concept of weighting a mat, there are skills that we just don't practice at all or often. Now, if graphic design is not for you, go out and find a graphic designer to help you with your book. It will make a night and day difference, trust me. I look at the design of my first three books and yes, they get better and better as I get practice, but this last book was in the hands of an honest-to-god graphic designer (thank you again Patrick) and the effect is immediate and sublime.
The relation between good and poor book design is similar to how an amazing image can be brought down by clumsy printing, matting and framing. So too can a good book be tripped up by clumsy design and layout. Be aware of this.
Also, make use of Blurb's Booksmart. For the non-designer, a very handy piece of software. Chock full of templates and customization that will allow most novice book designers to do most anything they can think of to do, while still helping insure that they don't totally screw up the necessary specifications for the layout. Anyway, Booksmart is easily the best bookmaking software meant for non-designers I have seen out there. Sure, InDesign is much better, but you get my point.
Advice #5. Do it. Go on. Go make a book. It teaches you about photography. A good book is not just a collection of individual hero images. The images have to work together and with one another to tell a cohesive narrative, to get across a message. And that can be done with individually strong images, but it can also use images that do not stand alone by themselves, but must be involved in a group. And learning how to photograph in that fashion, where you are not just thinking about the one image in front of you and making a hero out of it, but how to look for the more subtle images that will effectively fill gaps is important.
Anyway, it is all good experience. This project started out as a self-assignment to encourage me to get out and make more photographs. It quickly developed a life of its own and I ended up learning things about these bridges that I had not anticipated. That too is the value of taking on a project like this. It grows and you grow with it. It is also an exercise in patience (sort of like reading some of my posts) and anytime you get to practice patience as a photographer, you should.
But yeah, I hope some of you head over to Blurb and check my book out. I even hope some of you buy it, though not because I am that desperate for ten bucks, just because I like to know my images are ending up in good homes. Even more so though, I hope some of you think about taking on your own projects, assigning some direction to your photography, turning your ideas loose and then holding on and seeing where they take you. And when you make books of your own, by all means, let me know, I would love to see them.
