A wonderful, tipped in advert from the inner back cover of the March 1925 edition of the German book, publishing & print industry magazine the "Deutscher Buch - und Steindrucker". This double sided sheet is for the Colour Ink manufacturer's Gebr. Hartmann of Ammendorf - Chemische Fabrik Halle-Ammendorf, Druckfarbenfabriken in Ammendorf bei Halle, Saale.
The advert is entitled "Wir allein liefern Konzentrafarben für offsetdruck." - loosely translated as "We alone supply concentrate inks for offset printing." It shows three packaging designs - the type of design and printing that such inks could be put to good use for.
The back of the sheet is in some remarkable lettering or typeface and reads "Have you already tried our tried and tested offset inks?".
It certainly is a colourful advert for a colourful trade.
These Scout Books are HOT!
Mt. Hood Community College’s Integrated Media Program recently had it’s yearly Portfolio Show featuring the work of 18 graphic design students and 12 digital photography students of the class of 2010. They handed these Scout Books out to more than 500 attendees of the show and encouraged them all to vote on their favorite portfolio. The book was also used to take notes on each participant and served as a great take-away.

When the New Graphic Design issue no.1 first came to our office in 1960, my husband studied it thoroughly to find the underlying grid that the whole publication was based on. (I still have the tissue paper system that he worked out.) He was fascinated with it since the grid is essential for organization of masses of information.
There is usually a grid automatically worked out in design work for letterpress (it's the nature of the process) but with the advent of offset printing, anything goes any old place you want and especially now with designing on computer.
Photograph from Vignelli: From A to Z, written by Massimo Vignelli, published by Images Publishing Group Pty Ltd.
"Establishing the most appropriate grid for a book on the Indy 500, based on 4 columns and 4 rows. This grid offers the possibility of having horizontal pictures based on the 2-to-3 ratio proportion (typical of slides) from small modules to a half page to a full spread".
Quote from Vignelli.

315 Main - 1901; restored - 1981 (NR, RTHL)
This replica of a medieval civic building is one of the architectural jewels of Sundance Square. It was designed by Sanguinet & Staats and built by William Bryce. Bryce served as Mayor of Fort Worth. The first Knights of Pythias Castle Hall ever built was constructed on this site in 1881, and it burned in 1901. Later that year, the building was rebuilt from the ruins and the design was altered somewhat by the addition of the gabled roof and the turret on the corner. The building was also the site of the first offset printing press and the first washeteria. In 1981, when the building was restored, a replica of the original knight (cast in 1882) was placed on the building. Thomas E. Woodward & Associates were the architects and Thos. S. Byrne was the contractor for the restoration. The principal tenant is Haltom's Jewelers.

The six self-governing Australian colonies that formed the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901 operated their own postal service and issued their own stamps. The Commonwealth created the Postmaster-General's Department on 1 March 1901, which took over all the colonial mail systems and the then-current colony stamps. These stamps continued to be valid and became de facto Commonwealth stamps. Some of these stamps continued to be used for some time following the introduction in 1913 of the Commonwealth's uniform postage stamp series. These stamps continued to be valid for postage until 14 February 1966 when the introduction of decimal currency invalidated all stamps bearing the earlier currency. The first definitive stamp inscribed "Australia" was a red 1d "Kangaroo and Map" stamp, the design of which was adopted in part from the entry that won the Stamp Design Competition. Although the delay between federation and the first stamps had several causes, one of the major reasons was political wrangling regarding the design. There was a considerable amount of opposition to any inclusion of British royal symbols or profiles.
Kangaroo and Map stamps: An Australian classic - The stamps and postal history of Australia can be divided into two periods: before 1913 with ‘Australian States’ stamps issued by the Australian colonies of Great Britain and after 1913 when the newly formed Commonwealth of Australia introduced stamps inscribed ‘Australia’. To showcase this new level of independence, a kangaroo was incorporated into the design of the first Australian postage stamps, within the outline of Australia. LINK - www.stanleygibbons.com/collecting-stamps/dispatches/kanga...
The design went through a series of changes, most notably from horizontal to vertical format. On the 2nd of January 1913, Kangaroo and Map stamps in 15 different denominations and colours were issued. It is worth noting that the stamps were not produced by any of the major overseas printers: they were designed, printed and perforated in Australia.
Below are some interesting ways in which you can start your Kangaroo and Map collection:
1. Colours: These stamps are known for their interesting colour varieties. The easiest way to start with Kangaroo and Map stamps is the 1d carmine stamp. Starting from 1d carmine, you can look for all the different colour shades and continue onto larger denominations.
2. Plate flaws: Known for a number of plate flaws, such as large retouches, these stamps can provide an entertaining challenge for a lifetime. The most popular flaws are the 2½d ‘Missing Fraction’ (caused by ink-clogging) and the 6d ‘Broken Leg’.
3. Cancellations: Circular datestamps are interesting to collect: a starting point could be finding issues postmarked in each month of 1913, their first year of issue.
4. Perfins: Stamps featuring OS (Official Service) government perfins are an interesting area of collecting Kangaroo and Map. Perfins vary in sizes and stamps with well-centred ones are particularly hard to find.
5. Watermarks: If you are collecting Kangaroo and Map stamps from throughout the period of the design’s use, until 1946, make sure to check the watermarks. Their varieties can make a huge difference in the value of the stamp. LINK - www.stanleygibbons.com/collecting-stamps/dispatches/kanga...

The typographic "Kangaroo and Map" stamps of 1913-1945 Australia, affectionately known as the 'Roos, are a delight for the WW collector and specialist alike. In fact, considering the 1913, 1915, 1915-24, 1929-30, 1932-36 five major issues (with five different watermarks as well), the watermark variations (inverted, sideways), the many recognized shades, and the four major die variations, the 'Roos offer a lifetime of study.
The (major number) issues...51 stamps
1913 Wmk 8 - 15 stamps
1915 Wmk 9 - 7 stamps
1915-24 Wmk 10 - 15 stamps
1929-30 Wmk 203 - 7 stamps
1932-36 Wmk 228 - 7 stamps
1945 Wmk 228 - 1 stamp (redrawn)

OFFSET PRINTING - In making the stamps, sheets of watermarked paper are printed between two rollers, somewhat like a huge mangle used on vintage washing machines. One roller contains the printing plate, made cylindrical, and fitted to its surface; the other steel roller is merely used to press the paper firmly against the inked surface of the plate. The vertical stamps have what is known as a series of partial offsets. An offset is caused when a printing press is set into motion without any paper fed into it, then the impression of the stamps will be printed on to the pressure roller with wet ink, so both rollers are now printing plates, and the next sheet to go through them will receive a printing on both sides.

The Voice of Mother Jones was the community newspaper of the Mother Jones Collective in Baltimore, Md. The collective functioned as a predominantly white organization organized similar to and parallel with the Baltimore Black Panther Party.
The organization existed circa 1970-72 after which many of its members joined the Revolutionary Union—a predecessor organization to the Revolutionary Communist Party.
The collective operated under a “serve the people” philosophy and ran a free lunch program for children in a working class community, a “liberation school,” a film program and a recreation program for children.
Politically, a spokesperson once described it as “Marxist-Maoist” and the group carried out demonstrations against conditions in the city jail, against rising bread prices, and in support of a bakery strike.
The group ran an offset printing press which the Black Panther Party printed their broadsides. Printing was done for other community a left-leaning groups in Baltimore as well.
It rallied community support to form a line of people outside the Black Panther Party headquarters in the city to protect that organization against an anticipated police raid.
It was itself raided by Baltimore police who failed to show a warrant and evidently planted drugs in the headquarters building of the no-drug group. Five members of the Mother Jones Collective were arrested.
Subsequently the group organized demonstrations against the raid and during the trial of Arthur Turco, the Patriot Party leader charged with ordering the murder of a Black Panther Party police informant.
The available issues of the Voice of Mother Jones are:

Chad Kouri loves paper. I might go so far as to call him The Collage Master. His work incorporates vintage ephemera, letterpress printing and found objects, which makes for a body of work that is at once tangible, nostalgic and visually spectacular. Find a bursting portfolio of Chad's work online at Long Live Analog, much of which lives happily in the interesting realm of digital-meets-analog. Geek out over projects such as his papercut desktop wallpaper for Kistune Noir, or his iPhone cases wrapped in digitized artwork of hand-cut vintage graph paper. Whoa.
Chad's Scout Book boasts a fantastic touch-and-feel, cut-and-paste quality. It makes me want to touch my computer screen.
