The Moon passed in front of Saturn on August 21, 2024

Credit: Giuseppe Donatiello

The Moon passed in front of Saturn, creating a lunar occultation visible from Latin America, Africa and Europe. Outside the occultation belt, a close conjunction was visible.

The occultation was visible from Oria with the disappearance of Saturn behind the Moon at 3:38 UTC, although at morning twilight. Its reappearance will be visible at 4:36 UTC now in daylight.

Due to the low altitude of the Moon above the horizon, the image is not very rich in details as the light had to pass through a thick layer of strata and relative air turbulence.

On the evening of July 10, 2022, through the gaps in the clouds, I was able to make a video www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ov71FGntlI of the occultation of Delta Scorpii (Dschubba) by the Moon, from my small homeland: Yuzhno-Morskoy, Nakhodka, Russia. I used my damaged Canon EOS 60D camera, focal length 135 mm, 640x480 video mode. This photo is stacked (in RegiStax 5.1) image from 400 frames.

I captured this occultation of Saturn by the moon using two telescopes, one was recording the event while I had my eye at eyepiece in the second telescope. I recorded the start and finish times as soon as I noticed them which were as follow:

* Occultation Start 18:35.51 AEST

* Reappearance Start: 19:19.37 AEST

* Occultation Finish: 19:21.20 AEST

My first altar, I wasn't entirely pagan yet, but definitely into the mystical and magical practices already (I was probably around 15 or 16 at the time. Not bad for someone that age in the late 80s!

The crescent Moon occults the crescent Venus during daytime on June 19, 2020.

The photo was taken moments after the beginning of the occultation, with the tip of the northern (upper) horn of the crescent of Venus just covered by the Moon.

In this image, it is very obvious how much darker the surface of the Moon is (in fact, it is as black as coal) compared to the highly reflective clouds in the atmosphere of Venus. The moon was hardly visible in the viewfinder of the camera, whereas Venus was bright and very easy to see.

Photo taken with a Canon EOS 550D trough a Celestron C-8 (2000mm focal length, f/10).

I captured my second asteroid occultation last night! Asteroid (1125) China passed in front of a magnitude 9.8 star (HIP 81295) at 10:27pm as viewed from Brisbane. This made the star "disappear" for approximately 3 seconds. To capture it, I set up my camera and 70-200 telephoto lens and took a series of consecutive 0.4 second exposures (@ f/4 and 25600iso), which I then stacked together to make a star trail image. All the stars show a continuous line except for the one which was briefly obscured by the asteroid passing in front, which has a gap. Also visible nearby is the planet Saturn and its largest moon Titan.

The crescent moon and the planet Venus in close conjunction on the morning of December 7, 2015 as seen from the west coast of the United States at 6:04AM PST.

Approximately two hours later during daylight hours the moon eclipsed Venus in an event called an occultation, something that happens only once every few years from any given viewing location on the earth. Observers in Alaska and western Canada were able to see the occultation during darkness, whereas in the remainder of North America the event happened after sunrise.

Taken with a Nikon D5100 and a Nikkor 70-300mm zoom lens (300mm at f/8) using a short series of 1/3 second exposures at ISO 800.

Occultation of Mars by the Moon Jan 13, 2025. The egress is repeated at the end in case you missed the first few frames of it. 12 inch Meade SCT with ZWO ASI2600MC in 8 bit video mode.

This is the occultation of the Pleiades star cluster by the waning crescent Moon before dawn on July 20, 2025, with the Moon in colourful clouds.

This was at about 3:27 am MDT with the Moon about to occult the star Alcyone left of the Moon, and with the star Electra about to reappear at top. Merope is behind the Moon, so the familiar pattern of the Pleiades is not obvious.

As I started shooting some local cloud formed around the Moon, but it was well-placed and added to the scene. The clouds add a rainbow of colours from the diffraction effect of light, called a lunar corona, created by water droplets in the clouds. The effect is brightest and most colourful around the lunar crescent

Despite the clouds, the "dark side of the Moon" is visible, illuminated by faint Earthshine, sunlight reflected off the bright almost-full Earth in the lunar sky.

The Moon was moving from upper right to lower left here over the morning with respect to the stars, due to its orbital motion around Earth, causing it to pass in front of stars one by one, hiding then revealing them. The timing of the occultation was almost perfect for my location in southern Alberta, with the Moon high in the eastern sky for all the event. The clouds moved off to leave the Moon is a clear pre-dawn sky for another series of shots 30 minutes later also in my collection.

The field of view is 5º by 3.3º.

Technical:

With the Askar SQA85 astrographic refractor at f/4.8 and the Canon R5 at ISO 200 for greatest dynamic range. The sky, clouds, stars and Earthlit dark side of the Moon come from a single 10 second exposure. To preserve details in the bright crescent and render the image as the eye could see it through optics, the bright crescent is a blend of 9 exposures from 5 seconds to as short as 1/50th second, blended with Lights1 luminosity masks created with Lumenzia in Photoshop.

The lunar disks were all aligned to each other as even during the short minute or so it took to take all the images, the Moon moved noticeably against the background stars.

Blue diffraction spikes added to the stars for artistic effect using AstronomyTools actions, to emphasize the Pleiades stars and make them "sparkle."

The scope was on the AP400 mount tracking the sky at the sidereal rate.

Getting some more work done on the sim... hope it looks ok >.>

Occultation of Mars by the full Moon Jan. 13, 2025; a few frames stacked from just after Mars emerged. (I had a meeting earlier so missed the ingress.)

A note for photographers: While this is a relatively challenging subject, it's made easier by the brightness of the Moon and similar brightness of Mars. Therefore a single frame can capture both with good exposure. Also, it's not too hard to estimate exposure of the Moon if you think about that it's a rock (albeit fairly dark basalt), fully illuminated by the Sun, so a normal daylight exposure using the "sunny 16" rule is a good starting point (f/16, 1/ISO sec.), and similarly for Mars. But the Moon is still fairly small in the sky (1/2º in diameter) so a long lens is needed to get decent size in the frame, which means a tripod is recommended.

I obtained a vintage ouija board for a photographic project I'm currently working on, but I'm too scared to actually sit in a dark room and give it a go. Perhaps I'll just take photos of it, eh?

The July 13, 2024 occultation of the bright star Spica by the first quarter Moon, which from my location in Alberta occurred in daylight. The reappearance of the star was just at sunset at 9:41 p.m. MDT. Here the star has reappeared from behind the bright limb of the Moon only seconds before.

This is a single 1/60-second exposure with the Canon R5 at ISO 100 on the Askar V80mm refractor with its 1.2x Extender for 600mm focal length at f/7.5. On the Star Adventurer GTi for tracking. The image has been cropped in from the full frame.
