This was taken two minutes before Saturn was completely occulted by the Moon (which occurred at 17:21:22 from my location). Also visible here are the moons Titan (SVI), Dione (SIV) and Rhea (SV). Between Titan and Saturn is magnitude 7 star HIP 114054.

I have been waiting the better part of the year for that event. An occultation of Saturn by the moon, visible from Wakatobi (It happened a few times throughout the year but not visible from here). Sky was clear, and I managed to take some shots and videos. I was prepared, with both telescopes out and cameras rolling. This closeup is a composite of the surface of the moon and a capture of Saturn done under the same conditions a bit before. It is just not possible to have a decent view of the event as it happens too fast to get a lot of data and the difference of brightness between the moon and Saturn is just too great for any camera to handle. I could still see the action unfold live on the displays. That's what counts to me.

We read that God makes His ministers "a flame of fire" (Heb. 1:7). His people should be torches. Not only evangelists, but witnesses, ministers, church officials, leaders, workers, teachers and administrators should all glow with the Holy Spirit, like torches in a cold street. God bless you. Occultation de Saturne par la Lune - 5h28 AM
Ce matin, aux alentours de 5h28, un phénomène plutôt rare s’est produit en France : Saturne a progressivement disparu derrière la Lune. Cette occultation est due à l’alignement parfait entre la Terre, la Lune (distante de 357 000 km) et Saturne (distante de 1,3 milliard de km). Il faudra attendre janvier 2025 pour que ce phénomène se reproduise
Phénomène compliqué à capturer, compte tenu d’une météo capricieuse et de la présence d’un voile nuageux qui a opacifié et altéré la netteté des photos. Plutôt une photo souvenir qu’autre chose, mais je vous la partage quand même…

Mars can be seen below and to the left of the full moon, about 26 minutes before lunar occultation. The North Berkeley hills are in the foreground. Seen from César Chávez Park in Berkeley, CA.
This is a handheld photo; I had forgotten to bring my tripod. The exposure was 1/60 second. The image stabilization must have been working great, since the details of the homes are so crisp.

Certainly, one could never put one's finger on it. The Professor I mean. He was...odd. And not just the odd of someone who prefers the company of books to people (to which he was also inclined). Was it the strange Mesopotamian-sounding name? Was it the unsettling green eyes defect? His rare odeur, something of a fusion between incense and freshly-dug earth? To wit, he simply appeared at the museum with a fresh curio from God-knows-where, collected his mail and disappeared again. As in, literally disappeared; he had no known lodging address, here or abroad.
A strange beast that one.
Here is a view of the occultation of the star 14 Tauri that occurred on 5 April 2022 at 00:32 (UT). 14 Tauri has a visual magnitude of 6.14 and can be seen in the lower left section of each image. From Wikipedia, “The term occultation is most frequently used to describe lunar occultations, those relatively frequent occasions when the Moon passes in front of a star during the course of its orbital motion around the Earth.”

Occultation of the bright star Aldebaran by the Moon on December 23rd 2015 as seen from London
A sequence of images were taken 20 seconds apart before and after occultation. These were blended in lighten mode in Photoshop to create two composite images. The composite images were then added to a 6 panel mosaic image of the Moon taken just after the post occultation images had been acquired.

The real trick was climbing down off the roof after a few too many drinks, combined with the cold weather causing me to lose all feeling in my hands.

What a view this was! I Love these astro events. They get my blood pumping. This is my first crack at processing the data I collected during the occultation of Saturn by the moon, just before sunrise on Friday morning, viewable from South Africa. About five minutes after this, Saturn disappeared from view, hidden by the moon. For almost two hours.
It's a composite image made from 2 sets of RGB data, one for the moon and one for Saturn.
I used an ASI290MM monochrome camera and a motorized filter wheel, the imaging telescope was a 12" RC.
I used FireCapture and some custom scripts to automate the process as much as possible.
I had to make a composite image because the moon is far greater than the brightness of Saturn. To get a decent image I needed to use much higher gain for Saturn, which would blow out the moon exposure. So the moon and Saturn were processed separately and combined.
I'm dedicating this image to our late dogchild, Holly, who passed away the night before this event. Usually she would be keeping me company in the backyard when I image, and she was missed this time.

Betelgeuse occultation by (319) Leona

A more accurate analysis of the Betelgeuse occultation by (319) Leona to more precisely establish the central time of the event, estimated at 01:13:04 and lasting approximately one second. The locality is in the grazing zone.
Visually (but also in my and other videos), with the image in focus, I perceived a quick flicker of equal duration before and after. Could this tremor be associated with topographic roughness on the asteroid? Or to the photospheric macrocells of the star?
I was very lucky because the weather was terrible everywhere. In practice, I was in one of the few areas free of clouds and with really good seeing. Some in the central area saw nothing! What's more, it wasn't even a given that I would see anything since I was in the northern limit zone. The theoretical upper limit was about 100 meters north of my position.
Nonetheless, both at the telescope eyepiece + video recording in the first location, and in the startrails in the second (this image), I managed to capture the event. This means that the prediction was incorrect, perhaps by a kilometer. The time, however, was very precise, with a difference of 2 seconds. A second or so, but it was one of the most exciting phenomena I have witnessed!

The disappearance was 2 sec from occultation (left), re-appearance was 7 seconds from emergence. Captured in Tucson AZ with a Takahashi 120 mm, Televue 2X Powermate, and a Nikon Z7II camera. Each image processed separately and then combined and labeled.
I really enjoyed planning for this and getting up in the dead of a freezing cold night to experience it….my image showing the apparent path of the planet Mars as it was occulted by the moon in the early hours of 8th December. Mars was covered by the moon at about 5am and reappeared about an hour later. Each photo showing the apparent motion of Mars, before and after the occultation, was taken 1 minute and 40 seconds apart. This is quite a rare celestial event, rarer still for it to be visible from our little island, the UK, and rarest of all getting a clear sky in Cumbria on the night of such an interesting astronomical event, it’s like winning the lottery 😁 - twice!!
Photos were taken at 600mm with a Sony RX10 bridge camera on a star adventurer to track the moon and keep it in the frame, using an external power supply and a heater to keep the intense cold at bay… ❄️
A star, SD-16 3939, in the constellation of Libra at a distance of 1.4 degree SSW of Zubenelgenubi is going for an occultation by the eclipsed moon precisely at 42 minutes and 10seconds past 1am on the night between 4th and 5th May, 2004 in Karachi. Only the eclipsed moon made the star bright enough to be snapped in this picture. An ohterwise full moon would have hidden the star in its glow. This picture needs to be seen in sequence with the preceding and following ones, in which the star is farther and then is almost gone in the respective pictures.

Moon Occults Aldebaran

The tiny bright star at upper left region of moon is called Aldebaran or Rohini as per Indian mythology. On 9th of Jan 2017 moon covered this bright star which could be seen through most of regions of Asia.

This is a sequence composite of the Occultation of Aldebaran along the graze line on Saturday, March 4, 2017. The graze line is a narrow geographic region along the edge the occultation visibility zone where the Moon will just graze past Aldebaran. This will allow for views of topographic features along along the edge of the Lunar disk that are usually not visible as Aldebaran passes behind them. The graze line passed through the University of Rhode Island campus in Kingston, RI.
