A little wider view of the area around the John Moulton Barn in the Grand Teton area. I posted one of my favorite images of the barn on another social media outlet and Aaron Moulton commented and liked my image, stating that it was his Great Grandpa's barn. It was such a wonderful thought to think that the relatives of this iconic barn are alive and well and still hold these places to be sacred.
Hrútárjökull, the glacier located on the left side of the photo, descends over a series of “steps” caused by resistive rock layers which results in steep areas of rapid ice flow and chaotic crevasses called icefalls. The term icefall was coined by analogy with the word waterfall, a similar, but much higher speed, phenomenon. The larger glacier on the left, Fjallsjökull, displays even more spectacular and pronounced icefalls. The two glaciers in southeastern Iceland are separated by a serrated ridge called by glaciologists an arête. The ridge forms a wall of uneroded rock that remains between the two glacial valleys. Both Hrútárjökull and Fjallsjökull descend from the icecap glacier on top of Öræfajökull, a large active volcano in southeast Iceland. A peak (Hvannadalshnúkur or Hvannadals Peak) on the northwestern rim of the Öræfajökull volcanic crater rises to 6,952 feet (2,119 meters), the highest peak in Iceland. Fjallsjökull and Hrútárjökull are two of several outlet glaciers descending from the volcano’s ice cap. The ice cap makes up part of the Vatnajökull glacier, a much larger ice cap that covers the top of several volcanos and has multiple outlet glaciers. The Vatnajökull ice field covers an area of 3,200 square miles (8,400 square km) with an average ice thickness of more than 3,000 feet (900 meters). It is the largest glacier in Iceland and second largest in Europe in area and volume after the ice cap on Severny Island which is the northern island of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago in Russia. Most of Vatnajökull including the two glaciers pictured lie in Vatnajökull National Park.
The Bangor and Aroostook heritage unit was our leader today going east on Job 2. We were spoiled with perfect weather all day, and good company. The train is seen crossing over the east outlet, where the Kennebec River flows from Moosehead lake.

On a frozen winter afternoon, Canadian Pacific train 142 crosses over the East Outlet of Moosehead lake just outside of Greenville, Maine. Nothing like standing in knee-high snow to get the job done.
Some fellow nature lovers looking down the log-jammed lake overflow outlet with some of the Ten peaks in view in the background.
The Rockpile is to the left.
Moraine Creek eventually flows into the Bow River..
Have a wonderful Wednesday!
Yamdrok Lake (also known as Yamdrok Yumtso or Yamzho Yumco; Tibetan: ཡར་འབྲོག་གཡུ་མཚོ་, Wylie: yar-'drog. G’yu-mtsho, ZYPY: Yamzhog Yumco; Chinese: 羊卓雍錯; pinyin: Yángzhuō Yōngcuò) is a freshwater lake in Tibet, it is one of the three largest sacred lakes in Tibet. It is over 72 km (45 mi) long. The lake is surrounded by many snow-capped mountains and is fed by numerous small streams. The lake has an outlet stream at its far western end and means turquoise in English due to its color. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamdrok_Lake

I headed to Birdlings flat this morning to hopefully grab a few photo’s, but in reality it was to escape life if I’m being true to myself.
When busy life and work pressures mount I find that getting away from people in general, and certainly the city is a good way to help clear my mind. The sea south of Banks Peninsular is a very wild place as far as Canterbury goes, steep beach’s, strong currents, wind and stirred up seas. It can be a great place for dramatic photos but more often its harsh environment isn’t conducive for photography. So after the 35 minute drive there and 20 minute hike along the beach to its North end with my gear and after a couple of photo’s I found myself just watching sea birds and the waves on the rocks. I packed up and headed over to the nearby calm but blocked off outlet of Lake Forsyth, such a contrast maybe only 25-30 meters away from the sea. Clam and a lot clearer air without the ever present sea spray, I sat there and just watched a few sea birds before taking any photos, no one for miles and with the sound of the sea as background it was just what I needed.
