Cameron Orr frequently plays at the Atlantic Ave-Barclays N/R/D platform. Makes it a much nicer place to wait for the train.
The original of this photograph is framed and located near the display case which contains an exhibition dedicated to Boyd Orr, in the David Lubin Memorial Library of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Rome, Italy.
Photo of REM Orr taken by me. I pressed the shutter too late, he was skiing faster than I thought.
Once we had got the hang of not falling over we were going to go up the mountain. The ski lift consisted of T shaped pieces suspended from a cable. You were propelled up in pairs, one on each side of the T.
The trouble was, 200 yards from the start the snow was banked up against a stone wall. As absolute beginners, we fell off the T where we had to ski across this wall. We tried all afternoon, and very late in the day we finally passed this obstacle, reaching the top with no further problems.
At the top it was very cold, a glaze of ice was covering the surface of the snow. The last of the other skiers shot off down the mountain, leaving us alone. The sun was close to setting. We set off in the direction taken by the others.
We had luckily started to get the hang of steering, but were nervous of trying to brake on the icy surface. Half a mile down, the trail split in two. "Left!" I shouted. "No, right!" he replied. It was too late and we went our seperate ways.
I was correct, and at the bottom I found the rest of our group waiting for us.
We had to get our bus to take us back to the ship in Trondheim, and the mountain rescue party set off to find REM Orr in the falling darkness.
It was three o'clock in the morning when they found him. He had eaten all the emergency rations in a mountain shelter, and was fast asleep in the bunk.
I can't remember REM Orr's first name. I do know his nickname, but I will not repeat that here as his family might see this one day.
