Assessment, Assembly, Action. Whatever your task, you do three things. Start by assessing what you already have and what you'll face, the problem. Then you plan with those variables in mind. Take what you have, get what you need, assemble things, people. Finally, you take action. Simple.
…or where the fire meets the houses. The CalWood fire reaches the base of the mountains after a downhill/ downwind sprint (see previous post for more thorough description). With minimal warning, all residents of houses in the potential path of the fire were able to evacuate, some with harrowing stories of driving vehicles past exploding trees. Sadly 26 homes were lost to the fire, though it could have been far worse. The fire hit the boundary with the former Overland fire (2003, on the left in the photo) with a loss of fuel (trees) and began to slow down significantly. Flames are faintly visible in the lower center of the picture burning through grass. The fire continued to burn slowly toward the south for a few days, but has been largely contained and will probably be extinguished by 2 cold fronts coming through the area in the next 4 days. The brownish color of the clouds is real and is the result of the ash emitted by the burning vegetation. Cumulus clouds of water droplets are visible in the back, partially obscured by smoke from different fires to the west (left).
Or maybe she was shocked to see me in my birthday suit. lol No word of a lie, I was sitting in the hot springs when I said to my friend... "Ahh, this feels good, now if only a bear would come and make my day." Much to my surprise ( jaw officially on the ground) not more than 10 minutes later out came a mama bear with two of the cutest baby cubs ever. They couldn't be more than a few months old. Mama bear told them to climb up to the tree top while she feasted on dandelions. I never got a shot of the babies, but the memory of them bouncing on spruce tree limbs will be something I'll never forget as long as I live. It really was a beary special moment.
Paulownia tomentosa, common names princess tree, empress tree, or foxglove-tree, is a deciduous hardwood tree in the family Paulowniaceae, native to central and western China. It is an extremely fast-growing tree with seeds that disperse readily, and is a persistent exotic invasive species in North America, where it has undergone naturalisation in large areas of the Eastern US. P. tomentosa has also been introduced to Western and Central Europe, and is establishing itself as a naturalised species there as well.
In Japan, where the tree's name of Princess Tree originates, its name stems from the practice of planting seeds of the tree when a couple has a daughter; it is said that by the time the daughter is in her older teens or at the peak of adulthood when she is ready to marry, the tree by this time has also grown to maturity, which is then felled and made into a tansu dresser as a wedding gift.

1 Corinthians 3:7 “It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow.”

Exposition Ramsès & l'or des pharaons, Paris La Villette

Canvases or gauzes were used primarily for religious and magical purposes. They were made for covering the head of the dead in the form of a headdresses. According to the beliefs of the time, the threads on these fabrics had to be spun in the form of an "S" in an anticlockwise direction. This thread, which had a magical character, was called lloque and, according to legend, the garments were infused with supernatural powers and served as protection in the afterlife.

Qurna is an abandoned village about 100m to the east of the Temple of Seti I. Until the early 19th century the community included at least parts of the Temple of Seti I. Several travellers, including Richard Pococke or Sonnini de Manoncourt even name a Sheikh of Qurna. Edward William Lane relates in 1825 that the village was abandoned and not a single inhabitant lived there. Comments by Isabella Frances Romer suggests that the resettling started in the late 1840s. Hassan Fathy alleges that the inhabitants of Qurna lived in poverty and thus were robbing ancient tombs as means of subsistence. In order to stop the looting the Department of Antiquities expropriated the land on which the Qurnis lived and decided to move them to a new settlement, to be designed and built by Hassan Fathy himself. New Qurna was built in the 1940s and early 1950 to house the then residents who strongly resisted the move.

"I ask myself every night
Time is up, it's do or die
Yeah
I don't wanna break on the shore like a wave
But I feel like I'm all outta time
All my energy wasting away
All play on my mind
I ask myself every night
How it feels to be alive
To let it go, let it ride
Time is up, it's do or die
I ask myself every night
How it feels to be alive
To let it go, let it ride
Time is up, it's do or die
Only die, only die once
Clock is ticking, guess you better run
And don't stop breathing till you'rе done
I know, I know, I know it's do or die
I don't wanna watch evеry hour as it fades
Or think of the years passing by
I keep adding the fuel to the flames
I'm burning bright
Only die, only die once
Clock is ticking, guess you better run
And don't stop breathing till you're done
I know, I know, I know, yeah
I ask myself every night
How it feels to be alive
To let it go, let it ride
Time is up, it's do or die
I ask myself every night
How it feels to be alive
To let it go, let it ride
Time is up, it's do or die
Only die, only die once
Clock is ticking, guess you better run
And don't stop breathing till you're done
I know, I know, I know it's do or die"
