A perfect evening. The guests are seating themselves, the fondue oil is reaching an optimal temperature, the scallops have come off the ice and I am driving, five minutes from the house. Then this happens.

This was computed for a loaded crude oil tanker, but it doesn't really matter. For a different type of large ship, the absolute values might change but the relative difference and especially the fundamental behaviour would be the same.
Scenario 1 - Crashback: Power from full ahead to full astern (BTW, in reality this takes some time to implement in reality), rudder a-port 25 degrees. The ship turns to port initially but as sshe loses way the effectiveness of the rudder is diminished and finally, inertia just has its way, the rotational energy of her engines turning and rotating her to starboard. She might end up colliding with her vulnerable side against the obstacle that the commanding officer was trying to avoid in the first place.
Scenario 2 - Crashback and rudder midships. As the rudder no longer counteracts her natural tendency to swing to starboard, the turn is much more pronounced. So it might seem that it is best to leave the hands off the rudder. But in fact that is not so.
Scenario 3: Crashback, rudder hard a-starboard. Now the rudder and the natural tendency to swing are acting together, increasing the initial rate of turn until the rudder becomes ineffective as she loses way.
And finally, scenario 4: leave her engines going at full ahead and do it all with the rudder, keeping mind she may have a preferred direction of turn. That will result in the shortest turn radius.

GREAT SAPPHIREWING (hummingbird) male Pterophanes cyanopterus. This male Great Sapphirewing is shown in profile hovering in the glorious early morning sunshine at the high altitude Yanacocha Reserve in northwestern Ecuador on July 23, 2013. Great Sapphirewings are very large and have relatively slow wingbeats.
The Great Sapphirewing is found in the Andes from Colombia to Bolivia.

Another entry from the old NBST files. Less than optimal light but the sun and snow bounces a little back onto the nose, besides it's hard to find fault with a lashup like this. The signboard for New Richmond is located about halfway along the siding and while not a far walk it usually doesn't show up well in my photos. It's nice to have it in this look back. This is just about the spot where the original mainline diverged southwest across the present day golf course on it's way to the old crossing of the St. Croix River. From here west the Minneapolis Sub follows the new alignment built at the same time as the high bridge (1911). January 18, 2002.

RED-BILLED PARROT Pionus sordidus. This wild Red-billed Parrot is seen in the top of a Guaba tree (genus Inga) in Mindo in northwestern Ecuador at 7:34 AM on January 21, 2016. A large group of these parrots were in this Guaba tree for over a half hour and were feeding on both the pulp and seeds contained within the long pendant seed pods of the Guaba.
The Red-billed Parrot is a member of the family Psittacidae and is found from Colombia and Venezuela south through Ecuador and Perú to Bolivia.

With my tessellation experiments I got addicted to spray paint. Here's how the same kusudama looks before and after spray paint. I specially leave traces of original color, trying to imitate metal corrosion.
The model is also not an ordinary one. It has the same principle as Paradigma: showing 50% of paper surface and having no flaps and no pockets. I have several variants of the same unit, this one is the only flat foldable unit. The others (maybe once I'll try them) won't be flat-foldabe at all. This one has also the most convenient measurements...
