The soil is a reddish tan, the skies pale blue, the geologic formations strange enough to be called hoodoos and goblins. It's not Mars, but it is Goblin Valley State Park in Utah.
My family and I vacationed around the Colorado Plateau this summer and while driving from Moab to Capitol Reef we took a quick opportunity to visit this unique location. Because it was a brief stop on a long vacation drive, it was the middle of the day with temperatures hovering around 100°F - not optimum for photography, or long exploration. I captured a few images while here and hope to come back at some point and do some night sky photography.
Hopefully, I won't come across any rock monsters or cannibals from Galaxy Quest.

A perfect evening. The guests are seating themselves, the fondue oil is reaching an optimal temperature, the scallops have come off the ice and I am driving, five minutes from the house. Then this happens.

Double Arch is a natural sandstone formation in one of the best (in my opinion) parks in all of America, Arches National Park. This particular set of arches were formed differently from most of the arches in the park. It is what is known as a pothole arch, formed by water erosion from above rather the standard erosion for arches, which is normally from the side. The larger opening has a span of 148 feet (45 m) and a height of 104 feet (32 m). These dimensions give the arch the tallest opening and second-longest span in the park. For scale, the lower right of this shot contains a group of people sitting in shadow.
The arches are open for exploration, but you have to be pretty nimble to get up to the top of the “window”. This open permission to climb can make photographers have to wait quite a while to get a clear shot like this one as the area can be crawling with tourists. Normally I avoid crowds by going very early for sunrise or late for sunset, but this tactic doesn’t work with Double Arch as it lies in shadow and mostly along an East-West axis, so the light for sunrise and sunset is not optimum to catch that natural amphitheater effect you see here.
Arches National Park contains the highest density of arches in the world, more than 2000 natural sandstone arches. It also features a variety of unique geological formations such as Balanced Rock, The Three Gossips and The Tower of Babel. It borders the Colorado River on the Colorado Plateau and is 4 miles north of Moab, Utah. It’s truly high desert, receiving an average of less than 10 inches (250 mm) of rain annually. In spite of it’s relatively remote location the park received more than 1.6 million visitors in 2018 and the lines to get in can be long…so get there early!
The shot: Admittedly I have glaring vertical polarization here from the CPL. At the time there was a lot of stray light flooding into my viewfinder and I didn't catch the mistake. A 90 degree turn of the filter could have fixed it. I have since started using a large oval eyecup to prevent light pollution into the viewfinder, and I highly recommend this useful addition to your camera.

The challenge today at We’re Here!: Wiggly Tin. I originally planned to visit Mare Island Naval Shipyard this evening to look for some “wiggly tin”, but two nights ago I was driving down Lake Herman Road and spotted this farm I’d never noticed before. That’s the funny thing about “We’re Here” challenges – you find yourself looking at the world a different way. This place is situated such that I thought morning light would be optimal, so I got up early today and drove back out there before work.
I give you: Wiggly Tin and a cow.

Baby killdeer walking through the grass. The light was pretty harsh and far from optimal but you hardly notice baby killder that is cooperative and do not run away as quickly as possible. So I laid down in the grass and let this little guy run around me. It was still not easy since it was pretty skittish plus its parent was screaming crazily at my slightest movement. Nevertheless, after they got used to my presence, they calmed down and there were few moments when the chick got reasonably close to me. Whiel it was not easy to focus through the grass, I managed to take bunch of shots, some of them I am showing here
One morning, before the sun rosen this tree alone and prominently attracted my attention immediately. It was one of those few mornings where the sky opens on a background of clouds thickened by the rising sun. As I could not get closer, I had to use my 70-300mm to fit in an optimal way.

Another entry from the old NBST files. Less than optimal light but the sun and snow bounces a little back onto the nose, besides it's hard to find fault with a lashup like this. The signboard for New Richmond is located about halfway along the siding and while not a far walk it usually doesn't show up well in my photos. It's nice to have it in this look back. This is just about the spot where the original mainline diverged southwest across the present day golf course on it's way to the old crossing of the St. Croix River. From here west the Minneapolis Sub follows the new alignment built at the same time as the high bridge (1911). January 18, 2002.

Conditions weren’t optimal, but with the weather forecast for the next week, I decided to go out and at least give it a try. Heavy mist overhead and lots of fireflies. 5 shots for the foreground with a touch of light painting on the corn, stacked and blended in Photoshop, and a four-frame vertical panorama for the sky, consisting of 5 shots each. Sky was stacked in Sequator, then photo-merged in Lightroom. Final two frames were then stacked in Photoshop.

I'm not sure this composition works since there is so much going on, but I'm putting it out here anyway. A cedar swamp is a complex place.
She may have been looking for a place to set up a nest. Sometimes ducks set up nests in weird or non-optimal places. Whatever the case, I got a few decent shots.
Pairs of Black-capped Chickadees (Poecile atricapillus ) are cleaning out nest sites throughout much of North America. Cavity nesters, they are finding hollows in trees and excavating, as necessary, teaming up for the laborous work. Once the hole is large enough, the female will build her nest with mosses and twigs, and lining it with pillowy goodness like rabbit fur. But they are picky. And they will sometimes start--or even build--up to five nests prior to selecting the optimal one for their eggs! In coming weeks, we'll see if this site is a winner.
As I was waiting for the optimum colour from astro twilight I noticed a Starlink train, these were spread out so took a while for them to all go thru.

A wider version of "Shadowplay:" If you remember my last image I posted last week, called, "Chasing Shadows," there was an ulterior reason why I used that title, besides the obvious, in that, yes, there were clouds casting a shadow on the East Mitten at Monument Valley. The truth is, I was the one actually chasing the shadows: my intent was to capture the shadow of the West Mitten onto the East, which only aligns with the sun in such a way to create this event bi-annually. Well, the first two nights of my attempts to capture this, were thwarted, including a full-on snow storm the first attempt, and a very last-minute usurping of the sun by a wall of storm clouds on my second attempt. The second evening, as the snowstorm had seemed to move on past, I watched with growing anticipation as the shadow began to creep up the opposing monolith, in reverse mirror image fashion, only to fade away before rising into proper position, with yet another large storm system blowing through on the western horizon. Luckily, I had a little flexibility in my schedule that allowed me to stay just one more night to try for a re-take. Three time's a charm! While the alignment may not have been as optimal as the previous night's, at least I was able to come away with a couple images that hopefully you can enjoy. This photo can be printed with minimal cropping on the sides in a 1:2 aspect ratio (sizes 10 x 20, 20 x 40, etc.).
