A common problem with landscape photography is "how do I make both the foreground and the distance look sharp at the same time"?
Where to focus
A foreground object and a distant background object are equally sharp when you focus twice as far away as the foreground object. For example, if there is a tree 1m away from you, you should focus at a point 2m away from you to render detail on the tree as sharply as details in the far distance.
What aperture to use
Wide apertures cause objects that aren't at the focus distance to become blurry (due to the Circle of Confusion). Small apertures cause the whole image to become more blurry (due to diffraction). This graph shows the best compromise between the two.
Returning to the tree example: if you were to focus at 2m using an 18mm lens, the graph shows that an aperture of f/16 would give you the sharpest detail on the tree and details in the far distance.
How the graph was calculated
The lines are drawn though points where the Circle of Confusion is the same size as the Airy Disc. The relationship holds whatever sensor size your camera has - no conversion factor is necessary (you should use actual focal lengths to read this graph, not 35mm equivalents).
Some useful conclusions
Short focal length lenses give sharp results with wide apertures, and so perform well hand-held. Long focal length lenses work best with small apertures, and so should be tripod mounted. When focusing on objects close to, you'll need to use a small aperture to keep the distance sharp. If you focus on distant objects, you can use a wider aperture. Cameras that use short focal lengths, such as digital compacts, give the sharpest results at wide apertures. Cameras that use long focal lengths, such as medium format cameras, give the sharpest results at small apertures.

finishing first and second in one of the toughest races anywhere in the world, the Dubai 24 Hour.
All but one hour of the epic endurance saw a Ginetta leading the SP3 class, with Optimum Motorsport running at the front for over two thirds of the race before they took the flag to take a secure class win and finish an incredible 20thoverall in a 95 car grid.
Shaun Goff, Team Principal at Optimum Motorsport added; “We’re over the moon, and if I am honest a little surprised! There’s no doubt we had the pace, but with three of our drivers lacking 24 hour experience, there was a possibility we may struggle to deliver the win, but we all succeeded and claimed our second win as a team.
“The car itself was pretty much faultless meaning we didn’t have to make any unexpected trips to the garage for repairs or fixes, allowing us to really focus on our driver changes and refuelling during the stops, that type of reliability is what wins 24 hour races. Bringing the G55 to its first 24 hour race and winning is a significant result for us and Ginetta, it is one thing for a G55 to win a sprint race, but to run so faultlessly in the desert conditions is testament to both the car and our team.”
Ginetta GT4 duo Ade Barwick and Bradley Ellis were once again on top form alongside new teammates Euan Hankey and Salih Yoluc, with the result marking the second class win at Dubai for the Optimum Motorsport team, who also lifted the title in 2012.
What this graph shows
To get greater depth of field you need to use smaller apertures. But lenses also become less sharp at small apertures due to diffraction. There is therefore an optimal aperture to use to get the foreground as sharp as possible, which is what this graph shows.
Infinity focus
It is usually best to focus on the object that you want to be the main subject of your shot. When that's a mountain, hill etc it is often a long way off. An approximation to this is "infinity", marked on most lenses with the infinity symbol which looks like a sideways 8. If you have an autofocus lens it is probably best to focus directly on the far point than to set it manually, but in low light autofocus becomes unreliable so it is probably better to use infinity focus.
Choosing an aperture
When the whole of the scene is a long way off choosing an aperture is easy. Most lenses are sharpest at about f/8, so that's the aperture to use. When you want something closer to be sharp too it gets more tricky.
How to read the graph
Suppose you are using a 22mm lens focused at infinity. Something in the foreground is 4m away. The point at which 4m and 22mm intersect is closest to the f/13 line, so f/13 is the aperture to use.
Suppose you are using a 50mm lens focused at infinity. Something in the foreground is 2m away. No line on the graph is close to this. At this point you need to re-think your shot and move further from the foreground, otherwise it will be intolerably soft. 8m to the foreground will allow you to use an aperture of f/22.
Suppose you are using a 10mm lens focused at infinity. Something in the foreground is 3m away. You're above the f/8 line so f/8 will work just fine.
Calculations
The lines are drawn though points where the Circle of Confusion is the same size as the Airy Disc. The relationship holds whatever sensor size your camera has - no conversion factor is necessary (you should use actual focal lengths to read this graph, not 35mm equivalents).
Useful conclusions
The longer the focal length you use the smaller the aperture you will need to use to get the foreground sharp, or the further you need to move back. If you want to get really close to the foreground, and get sharp shots, a wide angle lens is a must.

Rider York's (later First York's) 1995 five year contract to run York's Park and Ride services was re-tendered ready for continuation of the services from 2000. First York was selected as the preferred bidder but protracted negotiations followed, to achieve an outcome acceptable to both parties. It is likely that the Council's ambitions were beyond its means and it took some hard bargaining to find the optimum compromise. The new contract terms were eventually agreed to commence in 2002, with the 1995 contract being extended, under emergency provisions in the Tendering Regulations, in the interim. This probably provided a stay of execution for the Park and Ride Wright bodied Scanias, as new Wright bodied Volvos followed confirmation of the new contract award. This March 2002 picture of P429GLS, in York's Station Avenue as the bus headed for Tower Street on the Askham Bar service, was therefore taken near the end of these buses involvement in York's Park and Ride operation. After replacement, they were soon dispersed for further use with other First York companies.
Notice that the original messages to following drivers, extolling the virtues of the service, on the bus rear had been replaced by an advert. Moreover, the advert was an heretical one for a car - ironic, considering this bus and its fellows had been working hard to keep cars out of York City Centre for the previous seven years!!

AMSTERDAM - Boeing and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines have begun a series of commercial flights that will demonstrate how several advanced technologies, fuels and concepts can significantly improve operational efficiency, save fuel and reduce carbon and noise emissions. The technology demonstration encompasses all aspects of an aircraft's flight – preflight, takeoff, cruise, descent and post-landing.
The first of the flights, with a KLM Boeing 777-200 aircraft flying round trip from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, is scheduled today. A total of 26 flights are planned for a program called "Optimal Flight" that will continue through 2013.
"The art of the possible comes to life with Optimal Flight: It combines all of Boeing's current flight efficiency projects in a single program to demonstrate the most efficient, environmentally progressive flight possible," said Mike Caflisch, director of airspace programs for Boeing's Digital Aviation Customer Solutions. "This demonstration program will help us determine where next to focus our research and development to deliver improvements to air traffic management and airline services for our customers."
Each flight is being powered in part by sustainable aviation biofuel sourced from used cooking oil. Boeing is at the epicenter of the industry's efforts to develop and commercialize renewable fuel sources that don't compete with food, water or land resources.
The flights also feature new services that provide various advisories directly into the aircraft's flight management computer (FMC) and mobile device in the flight deck.
Developed by Boeing Research & Technology, the flight services highlight applications that increase real-time situational awareness for pilots using advanced digital aviation and air traffic management concepts. They include:
•Automation to integrate the dispatch and modified versions of the flight plan and performance data into the FMC. This saves work for the flight crew, allows for real-time adjustments and reduces errors by eliminating the need to make repeated FMC entries.
•Procedures and software applications that provide the air crew with recommendations to optimize the aircraft's speed variance while providing real-time weather advisories in flight to save fuel and enable more accurate waypoint arrival predictions.
If the Optimal Flight Program is successful, Boeing and KLM will establish new operational procedures and recommendations for follow-on development programs with the partners, including NLR, TU Delft (Delft University of Technology), John F. Kennedy International Airport, Gander, Shanwick, NATS Domestic and Schiphol Group.
There is also focused research and development through a joint agreement between Boeing, KLM, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Air Traffic Control in the Netherlands. This agreement is an extension of an agreement first signed in 2002 to develop solutions for the sustained growth of aviation in the Netherlands.
"Boeing is committed to improving the efficiency of flight by working with progressive airlines such as KLM to accelerate smart technololgies and make them available for regular commercial use," said Julie Felgar, managing director of environment and aviation policy for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "Through our support and services organization and commitment to relentless research, we can help ensure their airplanes are safe, reliable and on time."
"This is yet another great example of a value-added partnership between Boeing and the Netherlands, a country with an outstanding aerospace and technology industry," said Brian Moran, vice president, Boeing Northern Europe. "KLM is one of the most progressive airlines in the industry and a great partner in our ongoing commitment to finding ways to realize savings in fuel and reductions in emissions and noise."

Loved shooting the awesome Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Nikon Cameras! It was a bit tough sometimes to achieve optimum focus at F1.4 due to the shallow depth of field, but hey--not every eyelash has to be perfectly sharp! I could do it if I and the model were perfectly still, or F1.8 or F2.0 did the trick too. Kept switching it up! We had fun and she loves the photos! :)

View your artistic mission into photography as an epic odyssey of heroic poetry! Take it from Homer in Homer's Odyssey: "Tell me, O muse, of that ingenious hero who travelled far and wide after he had sacked the famous town of Troy. Many cities did he visit, and many were the nations with whose manners and customs he was acquainted; moreover he suffered much by sea while trying to save his own life and bring his men safely home; but do what he might he could not save his men, for they perished through their own sheer folly in eating the cattle of the Sun-god Hyperion; so the god prevented them from ever reaching home. Tell me, too, about all these things, O daughter of Jove, from whatsoever source you may know them. " --Samuel Butler Translation of Homer's Odyssey

From the golden spiral in the whirlpool galaxy and our very own milkway galaxy, to the golden mean of an athletic models' proportions, to the divine proportions found in a beautiful models' face, to the optimum curves and compositions of my fine art photography, I have found the Fibonacci sequence and golden number Phi to be omni-present. And so it makes sense that I found the golden spiral to naturally emerge in my physics theory--Dynamic Dimensions Theory--which postulates that the fourth dimension is expanding at the rate of c relative to the three spatial dimensions, giving rise to relativity, the quantum, and time and all its arrows and asymmetries. Yes! I have a pPh.D. in physics! Photons of ligth are but matter which surfs the fourth expanding dimension en route to creating a beautiful photograph.
And yes I am working on a book combining my philosophies on Phi, fine art photography, physics, the golden mean and number, the divine proportion, and the natgural emergence of the Fibonacci numbers in life and beauty. The book, filled with my photography aongside classic poetry, epic physics, and philosophy, will be called The Golden Hero's Odyssey. :)
Instructions for an Incubation
EYE-DEE-QUE (Something Like an Asclepeion)
Matt Wardell
Feb 12-13, 2016 10pm-11am
Incubation is the practice of sleeping in a sacred area with the intention of experiencing a divinely inspired dream or cure. As the exhibition is loosely based on an ancient Greek temple of healing, we too will seek the inspired dream or cure. To encourage dreaming, the following is recommended:
Before arriving:
Avoid caffeine, sleeping pills, alcohol, and marijuana. (At least the hours just prior to sleep)
Relax- stretch, take a bath or a shower, be mindful, have intention. What ails you? What is the dream? What is the cure?
Bring something to record your dreams. Keep it by your side so when you wake up you can take notes as soon as possible. Just thinking about remembering your dreams will help you to remember them. Be prepared to draw and/or write the dream.
Bring something to be comfortable while sleeping. Bed roll, sleeping bag, air mattress, favorite blanket, Snuggie?
When thinking about dinner options, consider something with cheese, chicken, or salmon.
Avoid a heavy meal.
Consider breakfast. Perhaps bring an item to share?
Gabie Strong (and friends) 10pm-midnight
Music for Healing or What You Need # 2
Gabie Strong, Christopher Reid Martin, Ted Byrnes
February 12, 10pm-midnight
Baik Art
Please join us Friday, February 12 for an evening with Gabie Strong, Christopher Reid Martin, and Ted Byrnes. Themes of catharsis and cleansing will lead into a sonic space to prepare us to dream and, ideally, to heal. Between 10pm-midnight, Gabie Strong, Christopher Reid Martin, and Ted Byrnes will activate the space of Baik Art. For an optimal experience, be prepared to lie down.
An intrepid group will spend the night following the performance in the ancient Greek tradition of ‘incubation’. Your dreams will be interpreted the following morning by a professional. Please email Matt Wardell at shonufwardell@hotmail.com to reserve your spot. BYOB (Bring Your Own Bedding). Details of the overnight stay will follow. Space is very limited!!
Gabie Strong is a California artist and musician exploring spatial constructions of degeneration, drone and decay as a means to improvise new arrangements of self-reflexive meaning. Strong uses sound performance, radio broadcasting, environmental installation, photography and video as mediums for experimentation.
Her work has been presented on Kchung TV at the Hammer Museum’s Made in L.A. 2014 biennial exhibition, Pasadena Armory Center for the Arts, Knowledges at Mount Wilson Observatory, Pitzer Art Galleries, University Art Gallery UC Irvine, and LAXArt amongst others.
Strong has performed at MOCA, the wulf, Los Angeles Contemporary Archive, Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair, Art Los Angeles Contemporary, Human Resources, SASSAS, LACE, High Desert Test Sites, LACMA, the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Jabberjaw, and with her all-female free-psych band Lady Noise for Dawn Kasper’s performances at the 2012 Whitney Biennial.
Strong’s work is an exploration of the affect of decay that is experienced from living in the spatial disorganization of the twenty-first century. This disorganization is the result of living in multiple non-places at once—both physical and virtual— where borders are both confining and permeable. I often collaborate with other artists, musicians and poets to create work that embodies the difference of lived experience.
Christopher Reid Martin is a multidisciplinary artist, currently residing in Los Angeles. He first began working with sound in Orange County in 2004, layering sounds from various field recordings of daily life which convey living truths and over processed instrumentation as the reactionary expression. These expressions came to birth the solo project known as of Shelter Death, as it has evolved into a project in which performance and sound interplay to make for a personal reactionary experience in a perpetually decaying world.
In 2010, Christopher had taken his creative endeavors into other avenues, releasing tracks under various formats under his shared Orange County based label Via Injection. Christopher's creative repertoire expanded when he began documenting his experience in countries outside the US, by taking field recordings, foreign radio recordings, and/or taking photographs. Photographs were either left unadulterated as they were taken or digitally manipulating and layered these with old scanned various schematics. This has lead to an ongoing body of work, which fuses reality in the form of photography, with corroded ideas in the form of chopped manipulated grids and manuals. Christopher has and continues to show work in a number of art shows and has performed live in a number of events in projects such as Bailouts, Via Injection, Shelter Death, and under his own name.

Daniel Pontius 9am-11am
Daniel Pontius will provide individual consultations of your dreams.
Designer and co-owner of SIMEONA LEONA, Daniel Pontius’ approach to intuitive dream analysis looks at the archetypal language of the collective unconscious filtered through the dreamer’s personal symbology. You are the oracle. This approach assists the dreamer to develop their own narrative in what may feel like an esoteric dream-world. It empowers the dreamer to become their own oracle—to find their own guidance and council to questions and concerns.
Daniel Pontius’ first job out of graduate school (MA Interior Design, 2003. WSU Interdisciplinary Design Institute) was making curtains for a 17th century Wiltshire, England manor house, updated in 1908 by Detmar Blow. Arriving in Manhattan after London, he sourced and designed custom fabrics and furniture for Clodagh Design International Interiors, followed by a key position in the Interiors Department of Deborah Berke and Partners Architects.
In 2008, his love of textiles and design brought him to Los Angeles where he began working on interiors as well as crafting custom pillows and hand-embellished textiles from vintage and antique materials for Pat McGann Gallery, Blackman Cruz and Hallworth Design. In 2014, Daniel Pontius and Cirilo Domine opened SIMEONA LEONA, an imaginatively curated design gallery located in Los Angeles’ emerging Koreatown neighborhood. The gallery spotlights the singular and the beautiful; focusing on simplicity and proportion.
Please be aware that the gallery will open to the public starting at 11am.
Please be prepared to bring an offering (suggested $5-20 donation) to compensate our artists.
And, be aware that a liability waiver must be signed to participate in the overnight event.

EYE-DEE-QUE (Something Like an Asclepeion)
Matt Wardell
January 9 - February 13, 2016
Baik Art presents EYE-DEE-QUE (Something Like an Asclepeion), a solo installation and series of events by Los Angeles artist Matt Wardell.
For the exhibition, Wardell will present an immersive environment of images and objects by channeling ‘something like’ an ancient Greek temple of healing. Using Baik Art’s unique architecture, viewers experience a literal (and perhaps figurative) katabasis (‘to go down’ as in a descent of some type), but more importantly, and ideally, a catharsis (‘cleansing’ or ‘purification’).
Numerous objects, found and constructed, engage with the verticality of Baik Art’s shaft-like space, surrounded by an installation of wall works including drawings, collages, and repurposed images. Several fabric sculptures fill the gallery functioning as apotropaic totems. These Guardian Figures suggest a ‘presence’, ideally something beyond the object.
Daytime and evening events will further activate the gallery a space for healing. Practitioners from a variety of fields will be on hand for consultation. Music for Healing or What You Need will present a sonic cleansing. Incubation and Dream Analysis will be an overnight event of guided sleep followed by dream analysis with a professional. Utilizing the healing properties of dog saliva, An Event for Wound Licking will be a participatory event pairing wounds with dogs. For the date and time of each event, please contact the artist at shonufwardell@hotmail.com.
In ancient Greece and Rome, an asclepeion was a healing temple, sacred to Asclepius, the Greek God of Medicine. These temples were places in which patients would visit to receive either treatment or some sort of healing, whether it was spiritual or physical. Epidaurus was the first place to worship Asclepius as a god, beginning sometime in the 5th century BCE.
Starting around 350 BCE, the cult of Asclepius became increasingly popular. Pilgrims flocked to asclepieia to be healed. They slept overnight (“incubation”) and reported their dreams to a priest the following day. He prescribed a cure, often a visit to the baths or a gymnasium. Since snakes were sacred to Asclepius, they were often used in healing rituals. Non-venomous snakes were left to crawl on the floor in dormitories where the sick and injured slept.
Matt Wardell seeks to prolong a sense of wonder while placing the viewer in a lingering position of active assessment. He is interested in how we choose to live and in introducing work that facilitates these investigations. Wardell enjoys walking on fences, answering wrong numbers, and giving directions to places he does not know. Uncomfortable laughter, confusion, and irritation tend to be the byproducts of Wardell’s works.
Wardell has exhibited his work at venues throughout the United States and Mexico, including the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco (SFMOMA), Claremont Museum of Art in Claremont, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), REDCAT, PØST, Human Resources, Black Dragon Society, Mark Moore Gallery, and Commonwealth and Council, all in Los Angeles. Wardell is a founding member of the artist collective 10lb Ape.
