“Frodo: I can't do this, Sam.
Sam: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.
Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?
Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.”― J.R.R. Tolkien

British Tar Products at Cadishead was located at the end of the former Exchange sidings that linked the Manchester Ship Canal coal basin at Partington. To my left was the trackbed of the Cheshire Lines Committee route to Partington and Skelton Junction that crossed the Manchester Ship Canal on a high level bridge that still stands today but is blocked off.

Figeater beetle larvae have six small stiff legs; so to move, they roll onto their backs and wiggle, gaining traction with the hairs on their backs. I manage to roll this one onto its "upside" to "race" for just a second.
Stepped onto my balcony to get this photo. Temperature at time of photo is -35C with -46C windchill.
Earlier today the temperature dropped to a record low for this date at -43C with -52C windchill. Brrr.

Used to load cattle onto waiting rail cars, this chute is a relic of bygone days that was found in Chama, New Mexico.
Magdalena, New Mexico is another town, known as the "Trails End" for the railroad spur line that was built in 1885 from Socorro to Magdalena to transport cattle, sheep wool, timber and ore. Thousands of cattle and sheep were driven into town (cowboy style) from the west, using the historic "Magdalena Trail". This stockyard driveway was used annually, from 1885 through 1916, when the driveway was officially designated by law through the signing of the "Grazing Homestead Act". It remained continually in use through 1971. The original stockyards and a cattle chute almost identical to the one pictured are still intact.
The livestock car (or simply stock car) was once a common staple of freight trains. Before the advent of efficient highways and trucks, railroads were able to derive considerable profit from hauling livestock thanks to its high priority status and time sensitive nature.
While cattle are most often thought of in this capacity other animals were also moved by train such as pigs and chickens.
As trucks gained a larger market share after World War II (railroads were simply not as fast and animals normally did not move in large enough quantities for customers to justify the shipping costs) this source of traffic became less and less desirable.
As the 20th century wore on stock cars slowly disappeared from freight trains and by the 1980s were rather rare. Today, livestock traffic is virtually non-existent and the stock car, like the caboose, has become an obsolete piece of equipment.

After getting onto Swanage Pier for sunrise, I didn't quite get the colour I had hoped for but still came back with some good images and got to catch up with some fellow photographers which was awesome.
This shot was shortly after sunrise with the old pier in the foreground and Peveril Point in the background. You can see the Grade 2 listed Clock Tower there which unfortunately has scaffold around it at the moment. It was built in 1854 at the southern approach to London Bridge and then removed and re-erected on its present site
in 1867.
A lovely start to the day down here on the South Coast. Have a great weekend!
I snuck onto the steps and stayed very still and quiet while I grabbed a couple of shots.
Here the "big fella" is trying to appear a bit bigger than he is.
Things will be slowing down shortly for us in our busy lives. With that in mind, I may not have time to answer or acknowledge your visit here to my page or any comments you leave but rest assured I will try to get back as quick as I can.

Over the weekend, 3526 and 3801 would push-pull a number of shuttle trips between Hurstville and Central - this would be the final weekend 3801 would be in service before it's major overhaul, which began in December 2007.

Washed up or, perhaps more likely, hauled up onto the landwash at the breakwater in Quidi Vidi Gut.
I went on Friday morning to see the impressive icebergs grounded a half mile out but like this picture better than what I got of the bergs. The cable is about as wide as my forearm and there seems to be about fifty feet of it there strewn in a little ditch in the rocks supporting the breakwater. I don't know what it served as but it looks like it is fifty years old or more. TransAtlantic cables and WW2 anti-submarine defenses spring to mind, but maybe it's an underwater power cable, and thus the three thick wires at the core. Perhaps it is an artefact of the US military base that existed a half mile inland from here in the 1940s and '50s. Got any guesses?

I sneaked onto the airfield in Húsafell to catch a closeup shot of this airplane. The image is a manual blend of 2 exposures (0 and -2EV) with various adjustment to contrast, levels, curves and tone.
Thanks for all the good words about my previous image. I'm overwhelmed.
Bonus points for those who can shed a light on this plane :)
Well your love keeps me alive, you're all I need to survive.
I got you by my side.
So I'm holding on, feeling strong, baby you're the one for all my life.

This waterfall drops onto the beach near Devil's Punch Bowl in Oregon. I have no idea what the falls are called, if you know, let me know. I wish I had an image of me taking this shot, because it was raining, I was balancing on rocks to keep from getting wet, and I had a umbrella over my the tripod, which also had water rushing past it. The whole scene was funny, but I wanted to get an image and I was not going to let the weather beat me. Not sure I won.
..the next part of our walk crossed headlands and cliffs. I was finding it difficult to work out where taken, so resorted to satellite view on google maps, combined with times of shots that I could place.

SPECTATORS on Freo’s North and South Moles witnessed a Mexican Navy tall ship spectacularly berth in port on Wednesday, decked with a giant Mexican flag.
The ARM Cuauhtemoc arrived in Freo on Wednesday morning and remained in port until Saturday afternoon.
The crew of the ARM Cuauhtemoc climbed the rigging for a spectacular entry and exit of Fremantle Harbour, Western Australia.
According to Fremantle Ports, the “instructional” ship facilitates the Mexican Navy’s 4th year naval cadets and is currently holding 261 sailors, many of whom clambered onto her 48.2m-tall masts in a remarkable display of welcome.
Freo is the Cuauhtemoc’s first Australian stop in her eight-month global training and goodwill cruise, following stops at San Diego, Honolulu, Tokyo, Incheon, Shanghai, Manila, and Singapore.
The Cuauhtemoc departed Fremantle at 2pm on Saturday, when she sailed on to Sydney, Auckland, and Tahiti.

From the meditation series... continuing onto the grassy area... where one needs to tread carefully (dogs have been around)...
So, I just took advantage of the situation and environs and combined the two... bible and "found objects"... Thought this was poignant...
...and so this series is beginning to reveal itself to me...
salvia, grass clump and poop... psalms
.
To Marit Cooper: yes, you're absolutely right, in some places I may be stoned for my brazen opinions. But, I live in fortunate times (a flickr world) where an artist may speak freely and clearly... my meaning here is that not all that is written is "written in stone" and that we each individually must find our own way... obey our hearts and speak truthfully about our humanness and our spiritualness... there is a blending that needs to take place.
I named this series "meditation", not "prayer"... because I feel we must abandon the old ways (blindly following a book or a leader), but step out and step up as an individual who can change the world...
Vanessa Hudgens holds onto her Gibson Flying V guitar as she stands front and center on the official poster for her upcoming flick, Bandslam.
In the flick, a high school outcast (Gaelan Connell) bonds with a popular girl (Alyson Michalka) over their shared love of music and results in them assembling a rock group that looks to win their school’s upcoming battle of the bands competition.
Bandslam hits theaters on Friday, August 14th.

Ran onto campus for my 11th "Squirrel Run" at the University of Michigan since our work from home started to combat COVID-19. It was a lovely sunny Spring day in Michigan on Thursday May 21st, 2020. Besides seeing all the squirrels and feeding them (with a big old bag of peanuts), it was quite exciting even though I was not on campus that long. Saw lots of chipmunks and rabbits as well. I did see lots of mommas and juveniles out and about, including a cute young one by the Museum of Art. Sending love and virtual hugs from Ann Arbor, Michigan.
