People throw coins onto its underwater brick platform, as into a wishing well. I stood on the bridge over the spillway, and pointed my cam down toward the water, to catch this image.

The following info is adapted from the article "Keeping Olmstead Alive: The Biltmore Estate" at landscapeonline.com/research/article.php/5133

The four-mile-square Bass Pond is on the historic grounds near Biltmore House. The Pond has the original flume designed and installed by Fredericik Law Olmsted in 1894 to keep the pond water clear.

The recently restored flume uses gravity feed, no pumps. After heavy rains or when the water is high and muddy, the manually operated release valve is opened and the muddy water is carried through the bottom spillway and pipe into Four Mile Creek, and from there, into the French Broad River. A huge underground pipe made of brick runs under the Pond, which allows one of the valves to be shut off, releasing water to the bottom of the spillway. The recent restoration of the flume system under Bass Pond was headed up by Bill Cecil Jr., the great grandson of George Vanderbilt. Bill Cecil Jr., is the CEO of the Biltmore Estate, a quiet, intelligently run family organization.

An adult male Sparrowhawk dries out after getting a soaking.

He had been perched on the hawthorn for several minutes when there was a sudden heavy shower.

As soon as the rain stopped he shook vigorously and then spread his feathers to dry in the sun.

The rain drops are still hanging onto the bright red haws.

CSX R614 takes the spring switch at Baxter to diverge onto the Poor Fork branch with 110 empties for the Lynch 3 complex.

Designed and folded by myself from an uncut 45cm square.

This is an evolution of a previous design here. The original was based on 22.5 degree angles but I was unsatisfied with the wings and wanted to add pleats for feathers. This version is the result of trying to 'transpose' the original design onto a boxpleating grid where feather pleats are easier to incorporate. I also stole the head from Lang's Barn Owl.

Have a fantastic day, everyone...

A pair of Union Pacific Geeps pull a single gondola from Seattle Iron & Metals onto South Garden Street along UP's East Marginal Way industrial lead. Seattle Iron & Metals is one of the busier customers along the line, receiving cars usually three days a week. The spur to the left has been dormant for a few months now but used to be probably the busiest customer on the E Marginal Way lead, receiving boxcars, reefers, and tank cars on an almost daily basis. Unfortunaltely the customer appears to have moved out or closed shop completely very recently and the spur is now used only occasionally to swap out scrap metal cars. I was lucky to catch them here just before sundown this day as they hadn't gotten to this customer until after dark the previous few attempts. Seattle, WA

A ghorfa is a kind of attic for storing food: grains in the lower part, olives and cheese in the upper part. Aeration is ensured by two holes in the outer and inner walls creating an air flow. These cells have vaulted the form of a closed half-cylinder on the outside of Ksar and has a door opening onto the courtyard. Each ksar can have one to six floors with hundreds of ghorfas (average 200).

My first foray onto the BNSF Wayzata Sub after living in the state for 6 years was relatively fruitful, with an afternoon NTWLIN appearing with a super clean BNSF 700 leading.

It's going to be another "Grab-a-Box" week. This box is loaded with grab shots that I took on my to the Roberval & Saguenay Railway in August of 1988. We had went via Maine.

After the BAR in Millinocket, ME, we travel to Aroostock and across the border into New Brunswick and Edmonton and then toward Quebec City. Along the way this train was caught at Saint-Éleuthère, (previously posted here).

Weather was much better by the end of the week, but a nearly straight shot to New York was in order due to my work schedule.

At Ste-Foy Quebec we find this pull-pull style VIA Rail train getting ready to head for Montreal.

The long and winding road, by the Beatles

This is the way onto Bookham Common from the little car park at the bottom of Little Bookham Street .

Below is a detailed history of Bookham Common by The National Trust ----

www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/surrey/bookham-commons/his...

Bookham Commons are two commons, situated just to the north of the villages of Great Bookham and Little Bookham, in Surrey, England, 154.7 hectares (382 acres) in extent; the individual parts are named Great Bookham Common and Little Bookham Common. A group of dwellings known as the Isle of Wight is situated within the site, and a track, Common Road, leads to it from the northwest. Little Bookham Common (the smaller of the two parts of the site) lies south and west of this track, whereas Great Bookham Common lies to the east.

Together the two commons comprise a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The site is owned by the National Trust. A network of public footpaths and public bridleways cross the site: in addition, there are a number of concessionary horse rides.

Light falls onto the backside of El Capitan on a cold February afternoon. Yosemite Valley is a glacial valley in Yosemite National Park in the western Sierra Nevada mountains of Central California. The valley is about 7.5 miles (12 km) long and approximately 3000-3500 feet deep, surrounded by high granite summits such as Half Dome and El Capitan, and densely forested with pines. The valley is drained by the Merced River, and a multitude of streams and waterfalls flow into it, including Tenaya, Illilouette, Yosemite and Bridalveil Creeks. Yosemite Falls is the highest waterfall in North America, and is a big attraction especially in the spring when the water flow is at its peak. The valley is renowned for its natural environment, and is regarded as the centerpiece of Yosemite National Park, attracting visitors from around the world.

Waves crashing onto the rocks of a jetty along shoreline in the Cape May, NJ.

I used a 10 stop neutral density filter to create a long exposure of the water movement. It is amazing the difference in mood and atmosphere you can create by slowing the exposure down. Gone are the energy of waves splashing into the rocks while a more serene scene is created.
