Every morning at work I have some granola, yogurt and whatever fruit was on the sale that week for breakfast. It's my routine and it seems to be a hearty enough breakfast to get me through to lunch.
This week however as I was standing in front of the pre-made granola at the grocery store I was annoyed, $5 a bag. It's expensive and I thought to myself, there must be a way to make this at home for less.
I think I was right, since I had the majority of the ingredients already, it was pretty cost effective and it made a lot more than I get from the store.
It took hardly any time, and it tastes great! So I believe I've found myself a great alternative! It could even be used as a cereal if I wanted, so that's another plus for this recipe!
I had to combine a few recipes to get my desired results, simple is always best for me and that's really what this turned out to be!
Recipe for those interested:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of almonds
- 3 cups of old fashioned oats
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/3 cup of brown sugar
- 1/3 cup of honey
- 3 tablespoons of coconut oil (I used olive oil, it tastes fine and saved me the expense of buying an oil I didn't already have in the pantry)
- 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1/8 teaspoon of almond extract
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. In a food processor (or blender), finely chop half the almonds and pour them into a larger bowl. Chop the remaining almonds coarsely and add them to the same bowl. (I'm lazy and ran the whole cup of almonds through the processor.)
3. Pour the oats, salt and brown sugar into the bowl and stir to combine.
4. In a small (microwave safe) bowl, mix the oil and honey and heat for about 40 seconds.
5. Stir to dissolve the oil and add the vanilla and almond extracts.
6. Pour the honey mixture into the oats and stir so they are evenly coated.
7. Pour the oats onto a baking sheet (I used a jelly roll sheet) lined with parchment paper.
8. Bake the oats for 5 minutes, then stir them around and bake for another 5 minutes. (My oven likes to lose heat, so I added an additional stir and 5 minute bake, but if your oven is functional, you can probably skip this)
9. Remove from oven and let cool.
10. Break the granola into clusters as needed and store in an airtight container.
Hope everyone is having a good day!

I like to use large aperture to soften background, though it can mean that very little else is actually in focus. f/4 is preferred, f/2.8 too narrow, f/8 background becomes distracting.

taking a few days off flickr. only a short break. i need to replenish the freezers though plenty of food in the cupboards but nothing i would like to photo. i can't spend time lingering in the shops or visiting the market. i've had radium iodine treatment since the beginning of may for a benign problem. no side effects but i'm radio active so must remain isolated at home for a little longer. if the weather improves i may take some garden photos. i'm viewing flickr so thanks for posting great photos in the groups :)

Cascade Mountains - Jackson County - Oregon - USA
"The California Ground Squirrel was named after Frederick William Beechey, who explored much of Northern California in 1826-28 as captain of His Majesty's Ship Blossom, this squirrel is also sometimes called the Beechey Ground Squirrel.... California Ground Squirrels are found from central Washington through western Oregon, California and into the northern part of Baja California. The squirrel is found in plains, small meadows, tree-covered hillsides, rocky outcrops and granite taluses. The northern extent of its range was once bounded by the Columbia River, but the California Ground Squirrel has crossed the river into south-central Washington.... Their diet is is primarily seed-based, including barley, oats, and acorns. They eat eggs, insects, roots, tubers, seeds, grains, nuts and fruit. Ground squirrels are known to eat grasshoppers, crickets, beetles and caterpillars."

Last year I took a lot of photos of barley; this year, there seem to be many fields of oats, so a different subject. Only 15 min walk from my home.
I like how the rain drops are held.
If zoom in, you can see upside down image of field beyond in raindrop.
I like to use large aperture eg f/4 on 180 mm prime lens to soften background, but means that not much of the oat is in focus., so more to achieve a feel rather than close up detail.
