I like to use large aperture to soften background, though it can mean that very little else is actually in focus. f/4 is preferred, f/2.8 too narrow, f/8 background becomes distracting.

I was really surprised when I was told by my mother that the field I was clicking ahead of me was an oats field. Oats is commonly grown in my hometown but only fed to cattle. No one eats this and most of the time, they are fed whole with the husk on to the cattle. So much for realizing how oats have become a stable diet.

The theme for Macro Mondays tomorrow, 11/20, is dried. This is one possibility- probably the best macro. Size verification later.
Photographed this sunset west of Navarre Beach Florida along J. Earle Bowden Way (Hwy 399). With this shot I was using the Sony A7RII (1/125 sec at f/22, ISO 50) with the Sony FE 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS handheld.

For this weeks Macro Mondays entry with the theme "Vowel" I had been searching around for a subject for a while and eventually I decided to go with Oats.
I decided to try and get a little bit of rear curtain sync going with the flash and capture them falling from a spoon.

Took this shot earlier in the summer at St Teresa Beach, Florida, which was spared the full brunt of Hurricane Irma. Thinking of my friends and family who (thankfully) didn't suffer much damage, but mostly of those who lost everything.
I do love looking at oats on the ridge and hope I get one more chance to photograph them before they are harvested.

As I was walking into the sunset last evening, having run a trail with Jessie, these delicate little empty seed pods were lit up like thousands of tiny paper lanterns. By the time I put Jessie up and returned with my camera, though, the sun had already set and they didn't appear to have the same glow. Now that I think about it, that was actually a better time to be shooting, because the bright colors would probably have been blown out in full sun. I'm really pleased with the way they turned out.
Had a quick day with Molly and Cocoa, two great photographers who were in the same place as me for the holidays. I had a great time despite the terribly chill weather :P

I've spotted the combine harvesters out already and I'm feeling I haven't yet found the pick of the crop: a glowing, waving field of barley. But because the Rewind Festival was on at Capesthorne Hall I decided to take the longer, back way to work and spotted a pair of wheel tracks leading from a gateway through a field of oats. This morning the light was half decent and I had left home slightly early so I thought I had time to park up, tip toe through the muddy field entrance and grab a shot. Unfortunately the road was and there was no ideal spot to park but there was a bit of what I took to be someone's front lawn nearby. "I won't be long" I said to myself as if it would pacify the owners inside the house, and dived round the corner into the field. The shadows and light were nice but I know I rushed it in my usual carefree manner. In and out, and the woman in the house probably never knew I had been there. But I got my oats. Am I too late to get barley this year?
