March Photo Challenge, day 5 is 'numbers'...when I first saw the challenge and was wondering if maybe it was something I would want to do it was this day swung the deal for me. Today my youngest turned 10. Here he sits with my birthday gift to him, a book. He reads more than any little kid I know. He has read the Harry Potter series..twice. He just finished a book on ancient Egypt and another on WWII. He wants to be a teacher (and married 'somewhere around 32' ) and I would not be surprised if that is what he does.

The exact numbers and who perished under the Nazi extermination camps in and near the southern Polish town of Oświęcim not far from Krakow, will always be debated. Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II, and Birkenau camps stand as a reminder for future civilizations of the effects of a misdirected populace, a population of folks who care to believe in only that which they are told by their Governments even to the extent to which they are robbed of that which constitutes their identity of being human, free of mind and spirit and the innate ability to individually determine which is righteous and that which is not. The German people were duped while other nations refused to believe that a government could be so cruel. Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II, and Birkenau camps stand as an ugly reminder of what transpired in the early to mid 20th century. It is a wish that the preservation of this monument to human atrocities will make similar future events less likely. One must ask oneself if history as this could repeat itself. Sadly, I respond, yes.
My book got a massive plug on national television tonight — I appeared as a contestant on the popular game show "Letters and Numbers," where players compete to solve word and maths problems. I didn't manage to come home with a win, but the show's maths whiz, Lily Serna, did read a page of my book out on air at the end. Gold!
