These "Expedition" Field Notes books are my favourite so far. Perfect for Space Pens.
I can't believe she took the time to write this, fold it, put it in a
plastic bag to protect it from the rain, and then taped the bag so it
was the same size as the note. This from the lady who parked in the
same spot a few weeks ago, preventing us from using our paid parking
spot.

The post-dark age mad purchase rush has finally settled down. I spent the first half of the year panic-buying LEGO sets, and now I'm experiencing a bad, bad case of buyer's remorse.
I never really expected to go back to collecting and playing with LEGO. I don't know, it's like a brick (ha. ha.) hit me out of nowhere and the next thing I know, I'm picking up boxes and boxes of LEGO at the toy store as if they were cheap candy. I strayed away from my core interest themes and bought a lot of sets out of curiosity and just for the heck of it (6193 Castle Building Set, anyone?).
While updating my inventory last week, I realized that by recklessly buying lots of small- and mid-sized sets over the past six months, I've missed out on the big ones (e.g. Cafe Corner) that I really wanted but have always dismissed as too expensive.
So now I trimmed down my to-acquire list for the rest of the year to a semi-manageable three big sets. I'm planning to sell some of my other old and new sets as well. Not an easy thing to do, really. I'm still having a hard time stopping myself from going to the LEGO section every time I pass by a toy store.

Sacred Harp singing is a form of church music started in the early 19th century in the northeast, which went on to be popular in the south. It's an art form that came close to dying out, but has had a resurgence in popularity due in part to the Internet. The locals who enjoy this singing have formed the Harpeth Valley Sacred Harp Singers and you can find out more about them here: sacredharpnashville.org/
Here's what's going on in the picture: Chairs are arranged to form a square. That song's leader stands in the middle and faces the largest group who sings the melody. On one side are the basses, who are opposite from the trebles, with the altos in the back. The book they use is a modern reprint of a book dating back to 1844 called The Sacred Harp. The music is sung a cappella, which means they don't use instruments, but with everyone singing they can belt out the notes really loud. The leader and some of the singers wave their hand in a pattern to help keep the rhythm. This meetup was at the 2011 Wilson County Fair in Lebanon, TN

Note: this photo was published in a Jan 19, 2013 issue of Everyblock NYC for the "customized" region of Central Park.
********************************************
When I first arrived in Central Park, there was a spirited game underway in a long, wide stretch of ground that lies between Central Park West and the inner roadway that runs in a circular fashion around the entire park. At first I thought it was football … or maybe soccer … but there were far too many people on the field, and it was far too chaotic and disorganized to be either of these sports.
Ultimately, I never did figure out what the game was all about. When I focused and took a couple of photos, I found that a few people standing on the sidelines were holding brooms, as were several of the people running around on the field. Others had sticks, and there must have been two or three different balls (soccer balls? volleyballs? I couldn't really tell).
I think goals were being scored, and people were keeping score, because loud raucous cheers would break out from time to time … but I never did figure out what was going on...

It’s a sugar coated version of XP that conflicts with my video editing programs. Microsoft has made it harder to move files with no “move” feature. They have taken away the windows picture viewer and gif images don’t work without extra software.
The switch to box wouldn't let me switch mto moizilla on a download for an upgrade to snagit.

Installing windows 7 signature edition on 32 bit and 64 bit. I had to wipe the 32 bit because 7 wouldn’t recognize windows 7 RC. Install of fresh 7 took About 40 minutes. From Vista 64 bit 7 copied and saved programs and data of @ 400gb on my lt and @ 80 programs in @ five hours! That was nice!

Wipe 7 32 bit because of ati problem. Starting re install
To ready desktop:
10/10/2009 10:08:59 PM
A wipe did not fix the ati glitch on a reinstall.
Windows 7 changed back to windows 7 basic color scheme and the tuner came back on. I had just plugged the tuner into Laptop 2 64bit vista and ati 650 worked. Then all of a sudden the tuner started working again on my 7 lt. Weird coincidence.
10/14/2009 4:21:42 AM
Uninistalling Roxio and using a windows basic or Aero theme in Display settings then re-installing the 650 program over the existing install made the 650 work for me again. I dare not mess with Windows TV tuner!
For those with simple need that don’t need a TV tuner I sugest Windows 7 Ultimate. For those willing to troubleshoot your ATI tuner I also suggest Windows 7 Ultimate!
10/14/2009 11:23:51 PM
A windows 7 update today caused the ati not to work again. It plays but is slow.
10/17/2009 5:16:59 AM
I had to reverrify my activation key on the 32 bit.
I can only network 2 machines that are both on 7.
10/17/2009 10:12:32 PM
A clean uninstall of the 650 then re-install AFTER re-installing roxio fixed it so far. It’s working with roxio now. Roxio’s TV tuner and the ati tuner are working. If you put in ati first before Roxio then Roxio won’t let you install ati.
Hp 7350 photo printer won’t work with hp laptop 64bit and 7 desktop 32bit. No compatible drivers I have found so far have helped.
I can’t figure out how to sort icons in Quick launch with 7.

A bunch of quirkyness for this Friday. A Post-it Note found on the car next to mine at the Starbucks in Stafford, VA.
Northern Rail Limited BREL Limited class 158/0 two car diesel-hydraulic multiple unit number 158817 of Neville Hill Traction & Rolling Stock Maintenance Depot passes by Castleton East Junction signal box on the Up Main line forming the daily 12:07 Leeds to Manchester Victoria (2M28). Friday 16th August 2012
Note, 158817 was originally owned and operated by British Railways, and passed to Angel Train Contracts Limited in 1994 as part of the privatisation of British Railways. Angel Train Contracts Limited was renamed Angel Trains Limited on 16th May 2000. It was on lease to Northern Rail Limited

the plane, a 737 was spotless inside. Not a mark, on surfaces or fabric (compared to somewhat shabby marks and wear and tear on US airline interiors). Not one dead trapped insect stuck in a windowed coffin between the inside and outside window of your seat (look next time, and how DO they get there to begin with).
Soon after takeoff we bank to the right to head south across the coast of sydney and the state of new south wales (NSW), over canberra (the national capitol area) into melbourne in the state of Victoria (VIC).
"Afternoon refreshments" in economy class said the announcement once in the air. Wow. Complementary wine and beer (mixed drinks A$6). Ignoring the fact the beer includes Fosters things were good. The "snacks" provided were good too. A joint packet of cashews and apricot. Large portions. Good quality. As the ingredients list, contents 100% cashews. Yum.
Cabin staff, in economy, smiles, friendly, want to help clearly.
Also walked around offering apples as snacks. Good apples. In a huge basket that must have had about 30 apples in it. I wanted to take a picture but I was laughing at the sight.
I LOVE the orange tablemat thing they give out too. It's a perforated nice-feel absorbant material. Its a tablemat. It's also a bag for trash afterwards so as they walk through doing pickup it takes seconds. It's also a napkin. It's a great tablematnapkinbag idea.
It also contains inside a wetwipe and stirrer for drinks that's twice the size/length of the US ones.
Sunsets. I've noticed the sunrises and sunsets occur very quickly here. Like within 15 mins and it's suddenly light, or dark. Must be the hemisphere and season (last week of winter). It's chilly enough at night i had to go buy a coat. My fault for thinking australia, sunny, its august, it will be hot.
Flight time 90 mins. Sydney to Melbourne. Quantas CityFlyer. $
Airport. Terminal 3 sydney. Bigger than National (DCA). Quieter but I realised its the people who go about their airporty stuff with less of a presence or noise. Folks just a few seats away on a cellphone have what appears to be a habit of covering their mouth with their other hand so their calls are not public (and hence quieter). A full flight doesn't have a gate boarding seat area where there are no free seats. Even the gate agent counter area is turned 90 degrees from the US standard so folks queueing are lining up in the area not out into the corridor. Terminal 3 is dedicated to quantas domestic flights. From arriving to boarding was never asked for any photo id. Why does showing some form of unverifable photo id help us with flights in the US?
New Zealand Maori queen laid to rest today. Queen Te Atairangikaahu (Dame Te Ata) reigned for 40 years, lacking any constitutional powers but beloved of the NZ nation. Before europeans arrived the Maori were ruled by many chiefs, their monarchy only came about after contact with the British. New Zealand - originally Aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud - was not colonised by the British in the way Australia was.
The natives, descendants of the Polynesians, often reacted violently to foreign visitors, begining with Abel Tasman in 1642. Captain Cook took possession of the islands for Britain in 1769 - without consulting the natives. The presence of the fierce Maori menat the British preferred and went off to colonise Australia instead.
But foreigners were drawn to New Zealand. British, French and American ships began making regular visits. Mostly whalers, seal hunters and traders. The Maori became part of their trading network and acquired tastes for european and american goods and a knowledge of Pakeha - non-Maori culture.
By 1830's foreign settlers were buying large amounts of land and the numbers of Pakeha had increased to such a point that the British goverment decided to annex New Zealand. Naval officer Hobson negotiated and they agreed to cede sovereignty to the British in exchange for a guarantee of ownership of their lands. Formalized by the Treaty of Waitangi of 1840. Initially NZ was part of the colony of New South Wales but in 1841 because autonomous (with Hobson as Governor).
By 1845 open warfare ensued from chiefs. By 1847 and the First Maori War they realised better to have a consolidated approach. They sought to emulate the unity and disciple of the british and so started the Maori King Movement.
For the first time in 1966 a princess was chosen to ascend the throne and Queen Te Ata became a symbol not only of her people but for NZ women. Long may she rest.
