The Japanese sense of beauty is…well….different.

Very different. I get the hair and the clothes but I don’t get the masks – either modern as with the “harajuku` girl on the left or traditional as with the white face of the geisha on the right. And as for the black teeth which you occasionally see…

Well it’s just not logical – is it?

The first time I visited Japan, squat toilets were universal, but in the course of the last twenty years they have become very rare indeed. This is the Japanese take on the water closet. As usual a few improvements to the original design have been made (and patented, I should imagine). The seat is heated. Music plays when someone sits on the pan (to obscure any awkward noises). There is a built-in hot water bidet.

As far as I know, no-one has been killed with one of these yet but they do have a record of emitting smoke and catching fire. 200,000 were recalled in 2007.

The house of one of my heroes:

"After we came out of the church, we stood talking for some time together of Bishop Berkeley's ingenious sophistry to prove the nonexistence of matter, and that every thing in the universe is merely ideal. I observed, that though we are satisfied his doctrine is not true, it is impossible to refute it. I never shall forget the alacrity with which Johnson answered, striking his foot with mighty force against a large stone, till he rebounded from it -- "I refute it thus."

Jaguars (Panthera onca) were once found both in North and South America. However, habitat loss and persecution of this species has lowered its numbers almost to nonexistence in North America and much of its territory in South America. It can now mainly be found in the rain forests of the Amazon Basin.

The largest cat of the Americas, jaguars are stocky, muscular and very strong for their size. Male jaguars are generally 10 – 20 percent larger than females. Males typically weigh 125 – 210 lbs (55 – 95 kg), but larger males have been known to weigh up to 350 lbs (159 kg). The size and weight of these animals varies depending on location; jaguars in more northerly regions tend to be smaller, while those in more southerly regions are typically larger.

In 1853 most Japanese urban centres looked like this . Wooden, low rise buildings, with stone built administrative buildings, a grid network road system and a central business district situated inland from a port. (Every major city apart from Kyoto was a port.) By the year 2000, Japan’s urban areas had changed dramatically….

Chiness letter (無) - Nothingness, Nonexistence

The warrior class in Japan , called bushi or samurai, held politcal power and leadership from the 12th century to the end of the 19th.

In the Edo era, they were ranked the highest of the four classes and former samurai were actively engaged in the modernisation of Japan at the end of the 19th century. Bushido therefore played an important role in moulding the …

the changes in Japanese culture which accompanied the modernisation.

Note the water surrounding the flower & how it bends the light and mixes the colors. It is at this point that the Florida Botanical Garden sequence ended though it could easily be extended to an infinite extent.

86,000 photographs seem like a lot but are not enough. On such a beautiful planet, how is it possible that anyone has time to dedicated to prejudice, bigotry, xenophobia, stress, anger, greed, gluttony, violence, warfare, addiction & all of the illnesses which afflict and reveal the failure of the large primate brain which is humankind's great and fatal gift?

Humankind has squandered its brain & its planet & its one and only opportunity of existence. Too bad that the human species and human individuals do not have free will! If you had possessed free will you would have lived differently.

That thing which is called "human intelligence" is not nearly as impressive as humankind imagines. There's a reason why such a trait has originated by once on the Earth and only once in the entire history of the Universe. Any animal so afflicted will inevitably drive itself extinct in a process of self-destruction which includes the destruction of an entire living planet.

And where was God while all this was happening? God's help never arrived because it was never sent, and it wasn't sent because God doesn't exist.

Soon enough the human species and God will unite in nonexistence and the Universe will go on very well without either. The laws of physics govern this place and therefore there is no need for either God or humankind.

Anyone who imagines that humankind is essential should perhaps direct their complaint to the human species since it is humankind which must bear full responsibility for the extinction of the human species, even if humankind had no choice about the matter.

This non-existence, linked to you,

is better than all existence.

"...a world that rests essentially on the nonexistence of [eternal] return, for in this world, everything is pardoned in advance and therefore everything cynically permitted"

- Milan Kundera

Bushido is about absolute loyalty, personal honour, devotion to duty, and the courage, if required, to sacrifice one’s life in battle or in ritual seppuku.

The most important samurai movie is Akira Kurosawa's 1954 feature, Seven Samurai, which not only impacted the way the genre was viewed, but elevated its status. The baddies have three guns and “bushido” goes out of the window as the samurai try to steal at least one gun to even the odds a bit. Kurosawa’s take on the way of the warrior is that the farmers are the only group that wins. The movie is really about the importance of the group (another deeply important characteristic of Japanese society) and Kurosawa emphasizes this by including all of each group in as many shots as possible. This film was the basis of the Magnificent Seven.

The film was copied by Holywood’s “Magnificent Seven”. These are films where the ethics of the main protagonists are equally as important as the action.

Currently, this is the most emailed story in the New York Times!

"Spectral Resonance" captures the stark contrast between the finality of death and the exuberance of life. This ai-generated artwork features a haunting skull enveloped by an explosion of vibrant splashes, symbolizing the burst of energy that is life against the void of nonexistence. The dynamic interplay of colors set against the dark background evokes a sense of the cosmic dance between creation and destruction.

“Bushido” has infiltrated our culture via the medium of movies. Some are culturally derisory, some very accurate. The Magnificent Seven remains the most successful translation of “the way of the warrior” into western culture. The film also marked the start of more complex multi-lead narratives, where ethics sits centre stage with the action.

Harrison Ford’s scene in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” where he pulls out his pistol and shoots the arab swordsman dead is just not bushido!

This work was made by renovating a two-story house facing the Ieura Port and turning it into a restaurant. Taking note of the gap between what humans perceive and actual reality, Rehberger covered the ceiling, floor, walls, and tables with stripes, polka dots, and camouflage patterns similar to those that were used for World War I vessels. Visitors enter into a world of illusion as they wander between two and three dimensional worlds, between existence and nonexistence. As lunch and dessert were served during the festival, visitors could enjoy the space while they ate.

I momenti in cui non so dare una risposta a tutte le meraviglie della vita, e mi sento disarmato al solo pensiero di coloro che credono nell'inesistenza di Dio.

The moments when I can't give an answer to all the wonders of life, and I feel unarmed at the thought of those who believe into nonexistence of God.

My project is about representing myself through representations of myself- a straightforward introduction to who I am and what I am capable of, as a cartoonist, a sculptor, and a virtual modeler.

In this first shoot, “The Artist as a Mesh”, I made a collage of various versions of my 3D self-portraits and took a picture of the screen. They were experiments, some successful, some failures. They also represent my foray into a medium I was formerly unfamiliar with, and my journey as I got more accustomed to it. The alternate version of the same screen, but with a colder glow and a different arrangement of the images.

In the second shoot, “The Artist as a Cartoon”, I printed out several past cartoon renditions of myself and piled them on top of one another. The dot matrix comprisal of the printed images turns fragments into smaller fragments- how easy it is to get lost in multiples and matrices! There is the You that you see, and the infinite ways that others see You. The alternate version of the second shoot has me holding up a mirror self-portrait I had done of myself in drawing class. It was taken by Sierra Turner, to whom I had given instructions to make sure that I appear at the center of the photo.

In the last shoot, “The Artist as a Sculpt”, I posed my terrifying clay rabbit puppet in front of a mirror, questioning her nonexistence. The alternate version is a portrait of her, sitting on a nice green blanket, with a jacket hill in the background.

Japan’s “baby boomers” were called the “solidarity generation” – Dankai no Sedai . Their children constitute the second largest proportion of the population after their parents. They have yet to make their mark. They were unlucky – matriculating just as the economic bubble burst. They were not allowed to join the “jobs for life “ brigade. So they temped and when the Lehman Bros debacle struck it was the temporary workers who were fired first on the pretext of downsizing.

Tabaimo sees her own generation as being quite capable of doing things for themselves. They have had to! The group is not as important to this Cross cut generation as it was / is to Dankai no Sedai.

The first ten seconds of any presentation are critical so it is worth putting a bit of thought into the title page. Kaoru Saito's mezzotint, "Swallowtails" provides the perfect introduction to this topic. At first sight, a traditional print of a very traditional topic. But something nags at the senses. The picture exudes "Japan", "society" - but "transition"?

Japan is a society in transition. The old and the new constantly contrast with one another. They very rarely clash, however. Both are accommodated in Japan’s broad, yet distinctive society. Japan has been changing at some pace since its official policy of isolation from the rest of the world ended in 1853, when the American naval commander Perry sailed into Uraga Bay. Japan was a feudal state up until this time. The Japanese readily understood the real power of Western technology and adopted it readily and willingly.

Some of Japan’s cultural traits I can read, some just mystify me! This title artwork, eg, can be read by any Japanese person instantly. I had to have it explained to me. The print is very traditional but it hints at the changes that are taking place in Japan today. How? The earring!

Long time, no uploads.

To be honest, I got so swamped with school and life in general, I haven't picked up a camera the same way I used to. But it's a new year, so I hope to get back into the swing of photography.

This wasn't really intended to be uploaded on here, but I just wanted to let everyone know I'm still around :)

Oh, and both of these were taken with long exposures, which explains the blurriness/my nonexistence in the second shot.

After WW2, the US occupation dissolved the “zaibatsu”, the great family financial empires in Japan such as Mitsui.

Although the names were revived in the 1950s, these postwar corporate groups were not owned exclusively by a single family. These new groups or “keiretsu” are characterised by mutual shareholding and consultation among their constituent firms. They are, however, much looser groupings than the pre-war “zaibatsu”.

And so faith is closing your eyes and following the breath of your soul down to the bottom of life, where existence and nonexistence have merged into irrelevance. All that matters is the little part you play in the vast drama.
