The Milky Way core rising over Maria Island and the Tasman Sea. Jupiter and Antares making a big show over Mercury Passage and the effects of fires inland can be seen on in the colour of the core right on the horizon.
Australian indigenous peoples used the dark spaces in the sky for their Dreaming stories. The Coalsack Nebula forms the head of an emu and the dust lanes leading back to the core form the neck and body.
This is a two frame composite image blended crudely in PS and my first real shot/s in anger with three elements all at once. The Z6, the Nikkor 14-30/4 S and a Skytracker.
I think the lens is sharp enough in the dark but my alignment of the tracker was off just a fraction - the stars are not as sharp as they could be. Aligning the tracker isn't that easy as we have no Polaris in the southern hemisphere - just a faint 4th mag star that takes a bit of finding.
My takeaways were to raise the ISO and drop the exposure time. Turn High ISO NR to ON...
Anyway it was a nice night to be looking out to sea :-)

Photoshop layers used for Colour Efex to get basic detail and a second layer used to converted to black and white using Silver Efex.
Used as practice but my wife liked it so much, she said I had to upload it.
Taken using the built-in panorama feature of Sony a6000, which results only in a JPEG file. Not having the usual RAW file, I did not have the full range of adjustments I am accustomed to.
I did not touch any of the HSL values, which is noteworthy since many people opt to make the sky much bluer than it really was. In this instance, this was one of the naturally occurring bluest skies I have ever witnessed.

I've never really been happy with b&w conversions in Adobe Lightroom, particualrly when using the Black and White Mix panel to make blue skies dark. All to often this produces ugly halo effects around objects adjacent to the blue sky. This problem is much worse in Lightroom than when using the old fashioned Chanel Mixer in Photoshop.
But I don't have access to Photoshop at home these days, and Photoshop Elemements doesn't have the Chanel Mixer. So what is a boy to do?
Well, somewhat late to the party (since NIk is hardly a new player!) I've found Silver Efex Pro. It isn't exactly cheap, but since Google bought Nik the cost of the entire Nik Collection of applications is now down to arround £100.. It's a shame you can't buy the various Nik applications separately, since Silver Efex Pro is really the only one I want, but now that the cost has come down I can justify going for whole collection.
In fact I decided to go for Nik Collection instead of upgrading to Lightroom 5 :-)

An architectural attempt to emulate Prague's Art Nouveau glory: a modern (modern in 1986) building behind an old one in Prague's town center. The position on the map isn't accurate, since I do not remember where I took this exactly.
Taken with my mother's Canon AE-1 in October 1986 and reworked in Lightroom and Color Efex Pro.

The path from the jetty to the hamlet of Darlington on Maria Island passes though an avenue of elderly Macrocapa - the Monterey Pine - or "Macrocarpa" (Cupressus macrocarpa).
Macrocarpa is a native of Cypress Point - Pebble Beach and Point Lobos, California. The species has been planted all around the world as windbreaks and shelter. Mills as a very light, fragrant wood but prone to movement with humidity.

Always on the lookout for a spiral staircase! This one is behind the scenes at St. Paul's Cathedral. It was easy to get a tour with so few tourists around. Harry Potter fans may recognize it.

Images have more noise than usual, especially in the shadows; so why not try the new-to-me NIK filters...
