... en mode découverte des effets de la Nik Collection (Analog Efex pro2, Noir et Blanc 7 et cadre lightbox), c'est "marrant" mais à ne pas abuser

I had a great time in Görlitz and the surrounding area.

Taken last Tuesday at the Botanical Garden. It was a moody autumn day, and really cold, too. I didn't bring gloves, because I thought it's still warm enough, but... it wasn't ;-)

(Kind of) HDR capture of the Mediterranian House which was the first greenhouse to be finished (1904) at the Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Garden. Nowadays it does not only show flora of the Mediterranian and the Canary Islands, it can be rented by the hour for events, like weddings, as well.

Have a nice Sunday, dear Flickr friends!

Captured in Kuching, this image celebrates urban space as a living canvas. The weathered façade becomes a vibrant visual archive, layered with murals of wildlife, heritage, and everyday figures that bring colour and cultural memory into the street.

The artistic concept centres on contrast between age and imagination. Cracked walls, faded paint, metal shutters, and practical architecture provide a raw backdrop for bold public art, while the sculptural centrepiece and painted bollards extend the artwork beyond the building itself. The scene feels playful yet rooted in place, presenting street art as a bridge between community identity, storytelling, and the changing character of the city.

Captured in Witton Country Park, this image explores a quiet pocket of life within a shaded waterside habitat. Ducks gather around a dense island of reeds, while reflected colour and rippling water turn the surface into a shifting mosaic of deep blue, green, and gold.

The artistic concept centres on contrast between calm and movement. The birds bring gentle activity to the frame, while the reeds form a strong natural centrepiece, rooted and still against the changing reflections around them. Filtered sunlight adds warmth and depth, creating an intimate study of wildlife, texture, and the restorative calm of an urban park landscape.

Prag '86: Zimmer mit Aussicht

#3: Before I take you on a sightseeing tour of Prague in autumn 1986 I want to show you the strange view from the hotel room and the backyard of the hotel (the next photo) we stayed in.

The view out of the window in this picture is actually a view "into" the hotel itself. I took it from the oriel window and one can look at the respective oriel in the adjacent room and the one in the room next to that room. The last oriel window leads outside.

Obviously this "architectural pattern" was only repeated for three neighbouring rooms. Otherwise, I suppose, one could have looked through all the rooms on one floor ad infinitum.

Taken in October 1986 with my mother's Canon AE-1 and reworked in Lightroom and Color Efex Pro.

You can find the other photos (more will follow) in my album: www.flickr.com/photos/94635768@N04/albums/72157663809358483 .

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in South Iceland.

From the archives of 2015. It was raining cats and dogs in 2017 so we only took a small number of frames - nothing like this sweeping view of the lagoon was even possible.

Another frame that I passed over back in the day so here it is brought into the light.

A quiet blue narrowboat rests beneath a canopy of summer leaves, moored along a shaded canal where the water is scattered with lily pads and flecks of reflected light. The vivid cobalt hull and red doors glow against the deep greens of the woodland bank, giving the scene a storybook stillness — part escape, part hidden home, part slow journey through the English countryside. There is a gentle sense of pause here: the boat held in dappled sunlight, the trees leaning close, and the canal carrying only reflections, ripples, and the calm of an unhurried afternoon.

Captured in Witton Country Park, this image transforms a quiet woodland path into a passage of natural architecture. Sculpted evergreen trees sweep across the walkway in graceful arches, creating a repeating rhythm that draws the eye deeper into the frame.

The artistic concept centres on invitation and enclosure. Fallen leaves, weathered brickwork, and layered foliage bring texture and history to the scene, while the carefully shaped trees create a sense of mystery and wonder. The result is a contemplative woodland study where nature appears to shape its own doorway into silence.

This is actually Böðvarsholtshyrna (572m) on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. It reminded me of Cirith Ungol in Tolkein's LOTR.

I estimate spending over 40 hours on numerous colour versions of this image but in the end called it quits and rendered the thing in mono.

The frame was always overshadowed by the Black Church at Búðir (the peak is immediately inland of the church on the other side of the highway) and the extraordinary Aurora that evening.

There was a lot of mist and rain kicking around during the day and it must have cleared for a second or two for this shot. It's the only frame in the day's shooting of this area and I seem to have shot it walking back to the hotel.

… And now (drum roll… ) Yes, another sunrise from my Umbrian archives from Summer 2018 (for details about Umbria and that beautiful location you could explore my album aptly named Umbria.

I explored that sunrise as much as possible, shooting from as many points of view as I was able to. A convenient approach, you could say – yet there is a drawback. There was a strange light that morning – the air was heavy, thick, damp: it seemed to resist the pouring, silky sunlight. Maybe because of this the photos taken from some points of view are almost intractable. This photo is one of them: processing it has been a long struggle, and the final result has been uncertain up to almost the end of the journey. I am not completely satisfied with this image, yet I feel that it is not utterly devoid of merits and hope that it can convey good emotions and thoughts to somebody.

This reminds me of a scene I witnessed many years ago – one of those scenes one cannot forget.

I was on the underground: the archetypal train crowded with commuters going back home after work. I could hear the faint, distant sound of a guitar and a voice singing - a street musician trying to top up his daily earnings. A girl was sitting in front of me, her head lowered. It took some time for me to realise that she was quietly crying.

The music was louder now: I could see the tall, blond young man getting nearer and nearer. When he reached us he hesitated a bit and then he positioned himself just in front of the girl and started swinging as he kept playing his guitar and singing a song I cannot remember. He was definitely not a talented guitar player - even less a good singer - but his overall attitude was very lively, energetic, uplifting. The whole scene lasted more or less one minute. At last the girl slowly lifted her head, looked at the musician, wiped away her tears and… well, she smiled. A shy, hesitant smile – but it radiated an aura of delicate light all around her.

I hope that this photo, its flaws notwithstanding, can gift some of you with a little miracle like this. After all, one can never say when a miracle will happen, nor whence it will come – yet it happens.

I wish you all a happy (if locked down) Easter!

A hug from Italy!

I have obtained this picture by blending an exposure bracketing [-1.3/0/+1.3 EV] by luminosity masks in the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal exposure" shot), then I added some final touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4.

A very selective contribution to the final effect came from the inverted RGB blue channel technique described by Boris Hajdukovic. While this technique (which, its imposing name notwithstanding, is pretty simple to implement) often holds interesting results in full daylight landscapes, its effects on a low-light capture (e.g. a sunrise) are utterly unpredictable, so at the end of my workflow I often give it a try to ascertain its possibilities. In this picture I have exploited this technique in a very frugal, yet effective, way – just some touches where needed.

RAW files has been processed with Darktable. Denoising with DFine 2 and the Gimp (denoised and original images blended by lightness).

This photo was taken at the "Miniatur Wunderland" in Hamburg. It shows a night scene of Las Vegas.

As many of my Flickr friends should have readily guessed, this is another image I have brought to life digging in my archives. Yes, Rosolina Mare, Summer 2016. Again. I am amazed at how many shots worthy the effort of postprocessing there are in that archive.

Just like its fellow image (You'll never walk alone), I had thought to process it a great many times, but I was deterred by some blown out highlights in the sky. Not worth the effort, I used to think. However I have made up my mind at last and, after recovering what was recoverable, I have decided to accept some blown out highlights instead of give up forever.

For me the main points of interest in this shot - the very reasons that have encouraged me to embarkupon processing this bracketing - were the rippled patterns of the sand and that enormous tidal pool, with its absolutely still water mirroring such a wild sky. I have a personal fixation (most probably a deviance) with envisaging certain patterns of sandy ripples as cortex convolutions of some mysterious brain of the Earth (e.g. my Thinking heavenly thoughts), so you can better understand whence the funny title of this photo has come...

Explored on 2020/07/06 no. 22

It was my second sunrise session at Rosolina mare - not really as good as the first one, to be sure (here it is an example): the sky was overcast, the light was hard, and a high-altitude sheet of clouds gave uniform highlights where the sun was. I was a bit tired - more on the morale side than physically, since I had walked some 23 km only to take a mere handful of second-rate photos. As I was returning to the "civilised" part of the beach, at last the sky started turning into something really interesting. Lots of clouds of different shapes and sizes, and piercing sunbeams at leisure. I was wise enough to take a real exposure bracketing, and this helped a lot to recover details in the blown-out area.

I have obtained this picture by blending an exposure bracketing [-1.3/0/+1.3 EV] by luminosity masks with the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal exposure" shot), then I added some final touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4. RAW files processed with Darktable. Denoising with Dfine.

This is one of two weekly projects I've set myself for 2017 - 52 landscapes in 52 weeks, the idea being that I'll have learnt how to do it by December.
