May Day walk on the beautiful castle grounds of Schloss Charlottenburg. This is the back of the palace as seen from the Carp Pond located in the huge château park that nowadays is a popular public park and recreational area not only for the inhabitants of the densely populated West Berlin borough of Charlottenburg but for all Berliners. It was correspondingly crowded on this sunny, hot day that was also slightly hazy from Sahara dust (which is quite a frequent weather phenomenon his year).
When flipping through the images at home, I was quite surprised to see that the palace and the people in the distance were somewhat blurred (at least in the photos taken from this particular spot). Maybe my composition with the trees' branches in the foreground had "confused" the camera's autofocus, and maybe the combination of slight haze and bright sunshine had contributed to this effect as well. I simply don't know, especially because I had taken this image at F/7.1. Maybe this is one of the rare occasions when landscape focus stacking is required, something usually unnecessary with an MFT sensor.
On the other hand, I found the blur in the background quite charming because it conveys the heat, haziness, and serenity of that lovely day quite well, methinks. And it makes for a nice slider as well, true to the mottos "Blur is beautiful" and "Sharpness isn't everything" :)

Say hello to Blingbert :) Blingbert aka Bertie is a long-time companion of mine and wanted to take part in the "Bird" theme by all means. "I'm shiny, I've got bling, I have to be your subject for the theme!", he croaked. Since I don't have many more artificial birds at home, I quickly agreed. The how-to and presentation, however, became subject to a longer discussion between us. He had often expressed his wish to be in the limelight before, preferably as a famous singer ("My voice must be heard to be believed!" "Bertie, I don't really think so."), so I suggested that I present him as the lead singer of a Glam Metal band ("Isn't that called 'Hair Metal'? I've got feathers, not hair," he objected. "Feathers are much cooler than hair," I answered, "and besides, your ancestors were dinosaurs, how cool is that?!? So maybe I should make you the lead singer of a Death Metal band?" "But my voice isn't suited for that genre, I can't do growls, I'm a super high soprano. And I'm a romantic at heart. I want to be presented in a more glamorous way than that. Opera-style, that's it!" "Well," I said, I think we can do both: Glam rock and opera. Let's see...").
Said and done. As a first idea, I wanted to use my multi-coloured fidget spinner as background and blur its motion with a long exposure. So I glued the fidget spinner onto a black tile with some modeling clay and then used some more modeling clay to glue Bertie onto the fidget spinner's non-moving center part. Next, I set the camera to Live ND (32), let the fidget spinner rotate behind Bertie, and captured away. It worked. But it was too flashy because the rotating fidget spinner was a much too busy background. Bertie was supposed to be the star, after all. So I switched to a more classic (and tested) setup: the gold-coloured cardboard as backdrop. The round metal thingy Bertie sits on is from a gift wrapping. I kept it because it looked nice, and for MMs, of course. Extra bling was provided by the star filter. The final image is a single photo taken with the manual Laowa 50mm. Bertie isn't sharp all over but I think it is enough that his head and most of his chest are reasonably sharp so the image is pleasant to look at. Besides, I also liked the bokeh of Bertie's tail feathers and his metal seat.
Bertie is a small brooch of 4,5 cm / 1,77 inches in height, and although I haven't worn him in a long time, he sits on my desk (amongst other, strictly non-desk, non-work related items, in other words: clutter) and keeps company with me. But I also still think he would make a fantastic Feather Metal band lead singer ;)

Entirely unintendedly, really. I think combining a chili pepper with a flame of sorts is a little cliché. But why is there smoke swirling around behind this dried Trinidad Scorpion pepper when I hadn't placed a smoke or fire source behind the chili, neither a lit candle nor a match to be hazardously lit (finger scorching included) just in time for the focus stacking? At first, I had put my go-to tool for backlit scenes behind the Scorpion, the small "Ledlenser" flashlight, but for the fairly small peppers in the bag its diameter was just a tad too big so I either had an unpleasant halo around my subject or a light leakage under the chili no matter how I placed it.
Time for plan B which brings us to the unintended part: I also have a very small, octagonal-shaped, extremely bright, and powerful "TrustFire Mini-X" key-ring flashlight that proved to be slim enough to disappear behind the chili. So I leaned the chili against the flashlight, set the latter to non-stop light, and then set the camera. When that was done, I looked at the display and saw a weird blue streak behind the pepper. "This is one bright flashlight!", I thought, assuming what I saw was a light beam. But then I noticed that the "beam" moved, and all of a sudden the air was also filled with a certain spiciness that started to scratch my throat... Well, this flashlight is not only very bright but it also gets very hot very quickly when it's constantly on – and the dried Scorpion's skin was (still is, I should add) wafer-thin. So it seems that the flashlight had started to scorch the dried chili. I quickly pressed the shutter button, nervously watching that thin "smoke ghost" move around while the camera recorded 30 images (15 ORFs and 15 JPGs; the JPGs are combined to a final stacking image in-camera), and immediately switched off the flashlight and removed the chili once the stacking was done. Phew ;) An unintended, unexpected, somewhat cliché, but definitely nice "accident".
I think there was no real danger that the chili might have been set on fire during the short focus stacking time, and the single swirl of smoke also was very thin. Helicon Focus, however, combined all of the 15 different ORF "smoke ghosts" into a more voluminous set of streaks which I think looked good so I left it that way. Size of the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion pepper: 3 cm x 2,5 cm / 1,18 x 0,98 inches.

St Benet's Abbey was a medieval monastery of the Order of Saint Benedict, also known as St Benet's at Holme or Hulme. It was situated on the River Bure within the Broads in Norfolk, England.[1] St Benet is a medieval English version of the name of St Benedict of Nursia, hailed as the founder of western monasticism. At the period of the Dissolution of the Monasteries the abbey's possessions were in effect seized by the crown and assigned to the diocese of Norwich. Autumn (and people) at the lake
Another one from my recent visit to beautiful Lake Tegel. When I took the photo, I thought that the guy standing by the boat was taking photos of the glistening autumn lake, but when I zoomed in I saw that he was actually taking a selfie in front of the boat. Well, what did I expect ;) Maybe this was his boat, maybe it was a boat he'd like to own, or maybe just a boat he wanted to show off with. The sunlight on that day had been so strong that the guy actually seemed to merge with it; to me it looks as if he had just emerged from Scotty's transporter beam ;)
Processing infos: This is an HDR made of a three image exposure bracketing, images were combined in HDR Efex Pro. The 7-14 mm is said to be quite prone to flares and also not to handle strong light sources too well, and since I was shooting almost directly into the sun I was curious (and not too confident) about the result. But to my surprise neither were the flaries too overpowering (I actually quite like those purple "spectres"), nor did the sun(star) look that bad at all.
Fun upload for Tuesday, since this image doesn't really fit into any "day themed" groups such as Window Wednesday, Monochrome Thursday, or Fence Friday; Sliders Sunday maybe, but I didn't want to wait until next Sunday ;)
