Observed in thicketed savannah woodland on a night drive from Tarangire Safari Lodge. This species is hard to separate from the Cape Hare (Lepus capensis), a species that tends to be found in much more open habitats.

Had to travel the Decarie Expressway tonight. Great to be able to stick your camera out the top of your car.

Tried to capture high speed moving car on freeway in Ottawa with a very long exposure !!

Taken at approximately three AM, the light shining upon this lone Cadillac sure make it stand out in the night.

These rabbit-sized nocturnal rodents resemble a small kangaroo having large erect ears, very short forelegs, and long powerful hind legs. They move in bounds of up to 2 m and have a long tail which provides balance. Observed in thicketed savannah woodland on a night drive from Tarangire Safari Lodge.

Description

I have never had much luck on night drives before but my guide Jonny on a farm just outside Kimberley SA said this would be different. He didn't disappoint. This was a great sighting (several actually) of a bat-eared fox. Like many nocturnal species they rely on hearing and a great sense of smell. They are insectivorous but still need to avoid predators as they raid the termite mounds.

Note the EXIF - an iso of 25600 and still useable (just). Modern cameras are extraordinary.

one of two Leopards we saw on a nightdrive in North Luangwa.

We heard a third one, but never saw it, then again, two Leopards is good enough for one drive...

Good news, btw: South Africa has banned Leopard Trophy Hunting for 2016!

Quality isn´t perfect, but this was the only moment he was visible through the bush.

From a loose-leaf brochure set issued by the famous electrical and components firm based in Birmingham, Jospeph Lucas, in around 1935. The various leaflets describe the main items of electrical equipment found in cars from batteries to starters and lights and how best to maintain them - with lots of hints on DIY as was common with motor vehicles at the time. Lucas had grown tobe a vital part of the supply chain as the Birmingham and West Midlands automotive industries grew int he first decades of the 2oth Century and they in turn had sprung from the bicycle manufacting companies based here. Lucas had started supplying bike components before diversifying into automobile electrics.

Several of the leaflets have marvellous scraperboard illustrations, sadly anonymous, that are very period! This for "Lamps", one of Lucas's specialities, shows a marvellous night view through the windscreen.
