Life Is A Highway: Last 50 Miles Of 1250 Mile NY-FL Christmas Day Drive - IMRAN™

The final leg of my epic 1250-mile, two-day Christmas Day journey from my Long Island, New York home to Apollo Beach, Florida was something straight out of Murphy's Law.

Initially, it seemed like every possible obstacle presented itself—heavy rain in New York and New Jersey, bumper-to-bumper traffic in VA, SC, and NC, and endless, grueling construction on the South Carolina stretch of I-95. It all added up to nearly 2.5 days of relentless driving.

By the time I gratefully entered the last 50-mile stretch, it was almost 2 AM on December 27, 2024. The roads were eerily empty, a stark contrast to the chaotic journey that had unfolded.

Despite everything, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief knowing I was nearing the end of this arduous adventure. Finally, I made it back to my Florida home. It thankfully had been spared from Milton's wrath, despite suffering some damage from Helene just prior.

Lisa

May 2016 - From a year ago - I've decided to pull the odd one or two of my older pictures back to the top now and again in a set called 'Bring Back an Oldie' - it always seems such a shame to me the way the older pictures on Flickr fade into obscurity :(

Edit: Trimmed some shadow from the bottom and tweaked the lighting on Lisa's chin as wasn't very flattering - 22 May 2015

Edit: Decided the image wasn't contrasty enough so tweaked a little - 7 May 2015

As my roommate and I were headed on 64 West, a jeep on the right shoulder had a loud back fire. The camera even picked up the flash.

This is something completely different for me - taking shots of the interior of a car and the outside scenery at night, in a bouncy vehicle on the move is more challenging than it looks. :-)

Even at 1/30th of a second with optical image stabilization, the camera had a hard time trying to stabilize the shot. Based on my experience, I've had very few "keepers" that are worthy of uploading to my photostream.

Daytime interior car shots are generally no problem as fast shutter speeds are selected by the camera.

On this photo I had a two second exposure, at an f-stop 5.6, 80mm lens going north on Vine passing Santa Monica blvd in L.A. about 8:15 pm. I was also making the camera bounce up and down going about 20 miles an hour, attached on a bracket mounted to my driver door handle pointing out the side drivers window, I liked the effect also.

I suffer from noise induced hearing loss. The pennant-winged nightjar is one of the many birds whose calls fall within those frequencies that I cannot hear. For people with good hearing the soft, high-pitched call of this nightjar often serves as warning that they are around; the bird is much less often seen due to its nocturnal habits. Its brown-mottled plumage keeps it well camouflaged during the day when it is sleeping, their cryptic appearance blending perfectly into their chosen habitat.

We arranged a stakeout at a venue njorth of Punda where the pennant-winged nightjar is known to display.

Because the western night sky still provided enough of a backdrop to see the silhouettes of the nightjars while they performed their aerobatic displays, we didn’t use any light during the watch. Patrick, our SANParks guide, pointed in the direction from where their calls were coming and soon I was able to fire off some shots. Two males and a female performed briefly overhead before alighting on the road near where our vehicle was parked. At times one or both males again took to the night sky and executed complicated but graceful aerial manoeuvres, giving me another opportunity to record them in flight.

The pennants streaming out behind them created an eerie, flowing image of swirls and whorls I have never observed before.

On a night drive we were lucky enough to spot an aardvark!
