Our penultimate day in Iceland was marked by the need to drive about 420 km to make up for all the days we spent too much time in certain spots during our round trip. Now we needed to make sure to get to our camping site that meant driving on and on. With a totally solitary road, the moon up there in the sky and the landscape illuminated by reflective snow it felt rather magical.

On a night drive in Welgevonden National Park we saw this European nightjar in the middle of the road.

NIGHT, WHEN THE LIGHTS COME ALIVE

World Pangolin Day 2024 is on 17 February, a day to raise awareness of pangolins or scaly anteaters, one of the most unique and endangered mammals on Earth. Their scales are harvested for traditional medicines that see them as cure-alls.
Pangolins are a very rare species and very difficult to see on a safari. One evening, on our way back to camp we happened to see a Temminck's Ground Pangolin.
Pangolins are almost completely covered in overlapping, protective scales, which makes up about 20% of their body weight. The scales are composed of keratin, the same material that forms human hair and fingernails, and give pangolins an appearance similar to a pinecone or artichoke. The underside of a pangolin is not covered with scales, but sparse fur, instead. When threatened, it usually rolls up into a ball, thus protecting its vulnerable belly. Pangolins are 30 to 90 cm long exclusive of the tail and weigh from 5 to 27 kg (Wikipedia).

The weather hasn’t been that great and last night was the 1st clear(ish) night I’ve had the chance to put my recently bought Viltrox 13mm f1.4 to the test for astro shots. I headed off to Spelga Dam in the Mournes area which would probably be one of the darkest areas we have in Northern Ireland. I brought the two children with me to let them see what the night sky looks like away from the light polluted Belfast and they weren’t disappointed, they actually got out of the car for 5 minutes. This was a 15 second exposure, f2.0 and iso 1600. I usually take planes out of any astro photos but I decided to leave this one in.
It’s hard to take it in that a lot of those stars may be thousands of light years away and some may no longer exist and then that Boeing 737 travelling from Gran Canaria is only 38000 ft up!!
Thanks for looking!
LEFT TURN
Don't you ever wonder maybe if you took a left turn instead of a right you could be someone different?

In the sparkle of diamond night
The moon was fool enough to let
The big cats out to prowl and play
No wonder it hangs now by a thread
As out of the dust from below,
Out of the belly-low-bush,
Sprang up a cat to catch,
To bring down the ball of moon
And let the night unravel…
Clawing, hissing, biting down
The silver thread tangled up in teeth
To scatter skies of unseamed diamonds
Letting velvet curtain drop.

Oh, I love it and I hate it at the same time
You and I drink the poison from the same vine
Oh, I love it and I hate it at the samе time
Hidin' all of our sins from the daylight
From the daylight, runnin' from thе daylight
From the daylight, runnin' from the daylight
Oh, I love it and I hate it at the same time
Tellin' myself it's the last time
Spare any mercy that you might find
If I'm down on my knees again
Deep down, way down, Lord I try
Try to follow your light, but it's night time
Please don't leave me in the end
I was driving from Virginia to Florida for our summer vacation... it was a tough and rough 14 hours driving through the night. This image was taken at a rest stop after driving through the night. As I was getting back to my car from the rest room, I noticed this grass bush filled with rain drops from the night before.... I knew I had to grab my camera from my car and took a few snaps... People leaving the restroom probably wondered what the hell I was doing there, hovering over this bush :) Hope everyone's summer been a good one. I will catch up with your streams soon! Still recovering from the drive :)
Long exposure taken while driving the Honda Accord (euro) Touring, camera mounted on a tri-pod fired with remote control.
