Komet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE)
Chr. (Fehlertoleranz +-4Jahre)

We went out hunting for the Neowise Comet, and this was the best image from the evening. Shooting a night sky is not something I have much experience with. This image was taken just over 1 hour past sunset. If you look closely, you can see lights from a passing plane below the comet. Going out again tonight... If I get another image I'm happy with, I'll post it.

Thank you very much for your kind visit, comments and faves!

Another look at the comet Neowise when it came to visit. Taken with our trusty nikon d3100 and our Nikkor lens.

This is an updated version of this capture taken on our recent trip out west. The original post was processed very quickly with our travel laptop, so was not very precise in the layer mask and reduced the light on the hoodoo too much in the original. Processing on the larger screen with the desktop is a lot more precise, and was also able to dehaze the night sky a little with the version of Lightroom on the desktop versus the one on our travel laptop.
This version is also slighter warmer White Balance, which at least looks much nicer on the 4K desktop screen.
So very cool being able to capture the comet while there in Bryce Canyon.
With the talk about the new comet, C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinan-Atlas) possibly outshining 1997's Hale Bopp in October 2024, my attention turned to Comet Neowise (C/2020 F3), that fabulous comet that graced our skies in July 2020.
For this image I traveled to the sacred Lakota mountain of Bear Butte in Sturgis, SD, hoping that the comet would reflect in Bear Butte Lake and it did!!
Adding a little sparkle, the marshes were light-painted by a passing car.
As for the new comet, we will just have to wait and see if it survives its trip around the sun. At Badlands Observatory, we're waiting for the magnitude to increase a bit before turning our 26"/f4.8 Newtonian Reflector telescope on it for a first look.
This is a five panel pano taken with a Nikon D850 and Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens turned portrait style.

Got some good views of the comet out there over the northern Arizona skies along Route 89A after a spectacular sunset at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Have had some spectacular sunsets at Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Valley of the Gods, Natural Bridges, and two at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon so far.
Took some wide angles of the comet, and then was trying to get a focus on it in the dark with the 105 lens. The only thing to focus on far off was car lights off in the distance, so used that to get a focus lock. Pretty close, but could do better. So today I made sure to test the camera at 105mm for focusing spot so that if get some other clear nights in Utah (we are heading back into Utah now on our trip), can get some better captures of the comet close in.
Wish I could get some time to check on all my contacts posts, but internet has been spotty for most of the travel so far ... and it has been a fun time out taking captures at some really great state and national parks).
So far it has been pretty good to stay socially distant from people, and most out here in gas stations, food stores, restaurants, etc. have been using masks. Many even while out hiking.
Our trek continues, and hope to get some crisper captures of the comet here at 105mm.
Cheers!
Finally managed to get out and shoot the comet. One shot for the comet iso 3200 @2.8 25 secs and one for foreground iso 800 @2.8 25 secs
Comet Neowise streaks across the sky in the Badlands of South Dakota!
Not the best image with some cloudiness and haze in the sky, but was pretty successful using just long exposure. Most people who got terrific shots used multiple shots and stacking.
Thanks for comments and Explore while I was away!

Here is a shot of comet neowise, that I've superimposed with one of my favorite back roads to make for some leading lines. Enjoy!

Quite an amazing sight and you can observe it from your front door!
Look approximately north east, initially at a low angle. You can see it for the rest of July 2020 in the northern hemisphere but then no further until in about 7000 years.

At 9.30pm last night, despite feeling all cosy and sleepy while sitting at home in my super comfortable lounge reclining chair. I opted to drag myself off out with a good friend of mine and astrophotographer Stephen Cheatley. The destination was Grin Low Hill, a reasonable 90-minute drive from Preston where I live and the subject that I wanted to photograph was this wonderful 124-year-old Victorian folly called Solomon's Temple.
This folly is built on a raised neolithic burial mound and affords 360-degree views from the upper floor. The reason for my visit was to capture the Neowise Comet alongside it but on arrival at 11pm, the cloud had already started rolling in. I did not have long to find a decent composition, set up my Canon EOS R and my tripod and fire off some shots before the cloud completely enveloped the comet.
A handful of minutes later, the shutter release cable button clicked and the view on the LCD screen had me feel elated for the scene looked absolutely stunning. I used my headtorch to subtly light paint the folly.
For those interested, this is just one single exposure. I am delighted with the location and it was my aim to visit it a few weeks ago during the lightning storms but they failed to materialise but I shall return on the next big storm.
I hope you like the image and thanks to my good buddy Stephen for keeping me company (social distancing observed and we drove in separate cars for those interested).

I finally discovered him before I had to wait 6000 years for him again
Most of us in the northern part of the northern hemisphere have views of the Neowise comet for the next few days, and it's faint enough that phones won't work for photographing it. True opportunities for old fashioned digital cameras!
Night photography really isn’t my thing. Last time I tried was the blood moon 2015 but I had a go with this. It will be 3000 years before I get another chance and somehow I don’t think I’ll be around. I have written the following few words in its honour.
A whisper in the sky
Trailing feathers of light
Aeons in the making.
