Clear skies for a trip up Truleigh Hill to capture Comet Neowise

Unfortunately since I live in LA, and I don't have a lot of time, it's difficult to get good astrophotography. But I did manage to go out Friday night to Venice Beach and nab a few decent shots.

With a little light painting you can see the steam coming off the pond.

C/2020 F3 or Comet NEOWISE is a long period comet with a near-parabolic orbit discovered on March 27, 2020, by astronomers during the NEOWISE mission of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) space telescope. At that time, it was an 18th-magnitude object, located 2 AU (300 million km; 190 million mi) away from the Sun and 1.7 AU (250 million km; 160 million mi) away from Earth.

NEOWISE is known for being the brightest comet in the northern hemisphere since Comet Hale–Bopp in 1997.

It was closest to the earth on 23rd July 2020. This was taken 11/07/20

For those who want to see Comet Neowise this picture should help you find it. Big Dipper in the top left and Comet Neowise in the bottom right.

I went out trying for pics of the comet and this one was tolerable, should have shot from the house. I was going to try to add a couple things but the electric line running along the old CGW wasn't it. We'll see what tomorrow brings. Maybe it'll actually rain.

In this photo there is a shooting star crossing through the tail of the comet.

A stack of 30 4s unguided ISO 1600 exposures with a 300mm telephoto lens. The comet is slightly trailed because of the 4s exposure time. The stars are more strongly trailed because of the comet's motion during the 5m that elapsed in the course of the exposures.

This was the first night (for me) that its nucleus looked green.

The two stars below the comet are κ and ι Ursa Majoris.
