I took this Meadow Pipit yesterday morning after a heavy frost when all the water had frozen. There were about twenty Meadow Pipits and one Pied Wagtail walking on a frozen pool and apparently feeding on insects on the icy grasses protruding through the ice. I managed to capture this one skating on ice so you can see the pale pinkish legs, which differentiate it from the dark-legged Water Pipit I have posted recently. Meadow Pipit is also less white underneath (more buffy), more crisply streaked on the breast, and has streaks on the back. Meadow Pipit also lacks a strong eyebrow (supercilium) though that is variable on Meadow Pipit. The very similar Tree Pipit migrates to sub-Saharan Africa for winter so any pale-legged pipits in Britain in winter are likely to be Meadow Pipits. Meadow Pipits breed in grassy habitats throughout much of Britain though they are most abundant in the uplands. In winter they usually wander to lower ground, especially to the coast.

Its scientific name Anthus pratensis translates as "small bird of the meadows". Anthus was a small bird that inhabited grasslands mentioned by Pliny but not identified as a Pipit. Anthus was also the son of Antinous and Hippodamia who was killed by his father's horses. The Greek myth is that he metamorphosed into a bird that imitated the neighing of horses, but fled at their sight.

Maximus, the white horse sidekick character from ''Tangled'', as an 11'' long and tall hard plastic action figure. He is very stable on his four legs. His neck, head and legs move in unison. He also has articulated front knees. Tugging on his rear legs causes him to neigh for several seconds. He has a long blonde mane, a tail, and a top tuft. Also has a saddle and reigns. Made by Simba for the Disney Store. $24.50 US.

Evergarden Equestrian’s third annual Valentine’s Neigh Show included an in-hand halter and costume class. Participants adorned themselves and their horses in festively fun costumes to walk and trot throughout the whimsical gardens of the show grounds. Brightly colored flowers of pinks and reds sprinkled the path and heart-shaped balloons were scattered here and there. There were beautiful trees with pink blossoms and twinkling lights hanging from the branches. Every competitor took home a participation ribbon! Thank you Nayla for decorating the show area for the in-hand halter and costume competition - and thank you again, Evergarden Equestrian for putting together a dazzling class!

Me : “Where are your shoes??!”

Ricky : “In the house where they are safe from the puppy! Don’t tell me I’ll get sick without shoes because you know germs make you sick, not being cold!”

Me : “Meh.. You got me.”

Ricky : “Okay! See you later! Me and Neigh Neigh are heading out! GIDDY UP, NEIGH NEIGH!!”

Jacob took these two photos.Ha. Well in my neighborhood with my camera. Even though you would not suspect this was taken in a development with hundreds of homes stacked on top of eachother. It is just this random spot at the begininning that is just lovely.

Peter & I went for a stroll one evening in a little village called Bredhurst. This time it was me that wandered off & look what I found......these beauties had just been put to bed the sun was getting low & was casting a lovely warm glow on the stables & well how could I resist depressing the shutter button.

Holmi, Leiri and Stjarni...three of my favorite horse neigh-bors at the ranch...probably a combination of 60-70 years of wisdom packed into these three small, powerful beings.

Meadow Pipits are a fairly common breeding bird of moors, grasslands and dunes. There are nearly 2 million breeding pairs in Britain but it is still amber listed because of a 25-50% decline over the past 25 years. They are largely confined to Europe too so they are classed as "near threatened" globally. On the Pennine Moors near to where I live they are the commonest LBJ and you can hear their seep seep seep calls wherever you go in the summer, though they wander to lower ground in winter. Usually their only distinguishing feature is white outer tail feathers which you can see well from this low angle. But beware as other birds like Skylark and Whitethroat are also LBJs with white outer tail feathers. Most birders contract the name to Mippet, as they can't simply use Pipit as there are other species of pipit in Britain. I photographed this one among heather on the Peak District moors. Its scientific name Anthus pratensis translates as "small bird of the meadows". Anthus was a small bird that inhabited grasslands mentioned by Pliny but not identified as a Pipit. Is there any doubt why Canada would picked the "Regal" maple leaf as their flag symbol? It's simple, stunning, descriptive and colorful.... like our neighors to the north!

And they have so many.....

I like to see the Maple Leaf fly next to our Stars & Stripes! That says a lot,....

One of the houses in our neighborhood always is a standout in its Christmas decor. The older architecture of the house gives it the perfect Classic Christmas look.

Captured nine years ago on Christmas Day, it's still one of my favorite Christmas season images...

Let is snow, let it snow, let it snow!

These forests are bounded to old stories passed from one generation to the next. According to one of these legends, Lord Arnau was a nobleman who was condemned for his cruelty and lechery to ride a horse in flames for eternity in this forest without being able to find any peace. There are several people who believe that they have heard his horse neighing and others who even have claimed that they have seen him riding before a storm.

An ideal scene for a photograph of a lake, plenty of clouds coverage, but no people :-)

As I said in the previous post, sometimes, when you shoot a location, you get some interesting images from the place. They are very similar, but they are not the same. They both have similar light, the same subject, common elements...but they are different.

In some cases, you can't decide which one you like most, in fact some days you prefer one and the next day your choice is the other.

In Iceland that happens very often, you love the location, you shoot some photos, and then you can't decide....every place is so gorgeous!!

It happened again with this previous shot at Vatnsnes, where the moving horses where changing the composition all the time. With that Midnightsun light they were very nervious, neighing and walking around. You can check the other shot here (and in the first comment of this post).

The back fields of the Cherry Blossom Ranch* are rarely unoccupied.

Between her own horses, and those she boards, Sakura is usually full to overflowing with whinnies, neighs, snorts, and much trotting.

If Sakura or her foreman, Judd Lurkins, were to stroll out here now with that recognizable potato sack, all the horses would hasten over to see what might be pulled out. Apples? Carrots? Even... cookies??

A year of the shows and performers of the Bijou Planks Theater.

This was impromptu as we were spring cleaning our storage and saw that we have accumulated eleven of these American Girl/Our Generation/Etc size horses.

CM had recently mown this area so the grass was kind of short enough to make a pic. 😊

I don't know why we got so many but they were usually only like $2 at the thrift store. They're way too big for 1/6. But, they are pretty horses and most of them are articulated.

How on earth is this shot neigh on 25yrs old? It seems like yesterday & yet it's nearly a quarter of a century old. Jesus, I'm getting heritage! And no before anyone asks, I've absolutely no idea what the HST power car numbers are behind 37415. I was then as I am now, completely NFI!

A cold day on the outside isn't quite so cold on the inside when you have friends. I asked them if they would be my friends - they said neigh.

This smaller cousin of the Curlew breeds in small numbers in Northern Scotland and on the Orkney & Shetland Isles.

It is more compact with a much quicker action in flight. The head has definite stripes. From a distance it can sound like a neighing horse!

Not my best ever shot, but I was pleased to see these as they are only a passage bird this far South!

We moved to rural FL recently. These really are some of our neighbors; we see more horses, mules, goats, cows and dogs than we do automobiles or people. We love that!!

on·o·mat·o·poe·ia…. When I joined a sorority in college, there were lots of secrets: words, handshakes, rituals. I wasn’t a fan. One of my friends could not remember the secret word. It was a two syllable word, and yet she continually substituted onomatopoeia for the real word! So thanks for this challenge reminding me of one of my favorite people. And for finally educating me to what it meant. ODC: onomatopoeia

Egypt is on of the noisiest countries I've visited. During my time there I remember always hearing crowds buzzing, engines roaring, horns beeping or horses neighing. The most peaceful time I experienced was sailing on a felucca in Aswan and admiring the signs along the nile. On the west bank you see the a mountain marked by the Dome of the Winds and the ancient Tombs of the Nobles are carved on its side.

Time Passed, and with Tyrving in hand the Sculler king amassed great fortune, land and power ... legacy. He won many battles and in turn many wars. He was conquest. Then one day another of that ilk landed upon his shores. However this man was not concerned with gold, treasure, or the owning of men. For him it was in the doing, in the being, of something more ... something without compare, unequalled, peerless. He took prize in the subjugation of conquerors like the King to set this forth unequivocally to the world. His name was Cromleck, and he was Berserker, or at that time what was known as a Bearskin.

Berserkers travelled in small packs of a dozen or so warriors, aligning themselves with various warlords, despots, and kings - or those who chose to oppose them, as they saw fit. They were feared by all and wore no armor into battle, only the skins of fearsome animals like the Bear or Wolf. On the field they would go into bloodlust frenzy, seemingly impervious to damage (or at least able to overcome it long enough to attain victory before succumbing to their injuries). They were staunch worshippers of Odin, the Raven God, and Odin was the god of a great many things, but ultimately he was of war and death ... because what is more ultimate than the cessation of life, and when is a man more alive than in the face of that? All those that fell at the hands of a Bearskin became sacrifices to The Raven God, and if they themselves fell, Odin would take them into Valhalla, as was true for all Viking Warriors. So as they saw it, existence was a game, or more accurately a contest, and they were really doing their quarry a favor helping them earn their way into Odin's Hall.

Cromleck was the most feared Berserkir of all. Of late he had come to wear the skin of a large Alpha wolf he had made a point of killing with only his hands. Making him the Alpha Úlfheðinn or Wolf-Skin. He was giant in stature. Not so much in height, he was rather short really, but he was built like a boulder, his body badly scarred from battle and lack of armor. These scars made more prominent in contrast to his thick dark beard and the hair on his chest and shoulders which only added to the menace of his appearance. Some who saw him on the field of war said that he was like a beast, but they were wrong. You see, he was a monster through and through. However, when business was concluded and all of the game pieces were put back in their boxes at the end of the day, he was really quite charismatic and jovial, in fact funny, and beloved by his small pack. All who met him were taken with him, making him so much more dangerous to his prey.

He had heard of the Sculler King's triumph from afar. Little did The King know how dangerous he had made things for himself, as he had been marked by Cromleck as treasure. There would be no negotiation, no bending of a knee, no surrender. Whether king or berserker, Odin would have his sacrifice. Several days after making anchor, Cromleck had twice seen The King travel the hillside in the early morning with a small hunting party toward a forest filled with game. He decided it was along this path that he would take him, and it would be fair. The King and his men were always armed for battle. The next morning he brought only two of his pack, as he wanted to be outnumbered (it was in the doing, in the being). They waited downhill behind a large rock along the stream where The King's path travelled. Before long, they could hear horses neighing and the conversation of men. ....

Deep in the forest near Cadmans pool I caught sight of this forest pony galloping back to rest of the herd after much distant neighing and whinnying. I did take cover behind a tree when i heard his hooves getting closer !

Neigh!

Not much to say about this one, just trying to find pockets of sun on this otherwise overcast day. Was a big surprise us to however to see a Norfolk Southern unit on BNSF traffic, a long way from home!

The way this works in the USofA is that if a railroad uses another railroads unit for their trains. The engine running hours are recorded and then the railroad who used the power returns the favour by giving out one of their locos for that specific period of time. You could very easily imagine this not being done properly.

Their natural habitat is in the mountains of South Western Aftrica where they live in groups of 7-12 animals. They built up families which stay together lifelong. The zebras recognize each other by their fur markings and olfaction.Their neighing is similar to that of horses. . This species in endangered.
