Off of White Sand Lake, there is a little lake that can be reached through a narrow, shallow channel. It has been coined "Lily Lake" by family. I like to paddle over there in the kayak. This year the lily pads were showing what looks like fall colors.

A small green cactus with tightly packed white radial spines grows from rocky desert soil. Two cylindrical stems rise from the ground—one taller and more developed, the other shorter and slightly curved. Each stem forms a geometric pattern of star-shaped spines. The surrounding earth is dry, scattered with sticks, stones, and muted brown tones, creating a stark contrast with the cactus’s vibrant green surface.
This appears to be a young Mammillaria cactus, a genus known for its tidy starburst spine patterns and clustered growth. Its compact size and bright symmetry made it stand out against the rough desert floor.
