The Netgear WGR614 Wireless Router is infamous for overheating and flakey performance. At times it would lock up every 15 minutes.
I attached a heat sink to the router's main processor with thermal paste and setup a case fan to blow across the heat sink. The processor no longer operates very hot and this has cut down on the frequency which the router locks up.
My hack has not solved the issue but has made using this router more bearable as I save up to purchase a replacement.
After 10 minutes of trying different combinations of power leads and outlets(*), I found that this bundle had two different network cables in it.
A good technician will try and keep the number of those moments to a minimum. A bad technician won't ever have them.
* I use Powerline network adapters around the house if I need a bit more throughput - like if I'm forced to use the laptop and XP decides that it needs to download a bazillion f*@$% updates. That's cool, BillG, you keep people like me in a job. But I digress.
My Netgear adapters are sometimes picky about which outlet is being used, so a bit of trial and error is called for. In this case I also managed to ignore the status light which tells you if the network cable is connected properly. It had been off the whole time ...
I needed an Ethernet protocol analyzer, so I built one using an HP Mini 110 netbook and Wireshark. I also use an old Netgear Ethernet hub (not a switch) to spy connections. Extremely portable, and serves as a remote console to embedded devices too. Winter 2010.

I got connected once on the iPad and Ookla speedtest great but it then goes back to the router. My other IPad does too. Went thru the whole process with Laptop Ethernet to splitter from the Extender, and it reverted to the router, or says the Router is there, unless it thinks it passes straight thru the Extender without seeing it! Tried WPS setup,, no netgear web member join offered Settings on the iPad says connected ... Ookla speedtest great, then iPad lost the Extender... Did not find the extender, had to set 2GEXT and 5GEXT up manually but the iPad would not hold onto it, but revert to my TPG2AF7 router! My favorite little gigabit switch. No fans, tiny, supports jumbo frames and auto-x-over. Runs hot, but I've never had one die on me.
LOL. This thing is always flashing, so I go to take a picture and jostle the camera on it's make shift tripod and this happens. yay.
The wiring situation at the back of my computer... mainly thanks to all the external harddrives. I could also do with doing a bit of dusting I guess.
