Two weeks in NOLA for the mardi gras 2017

Founded in 1993, the Krewe of Orpheus takes its name from the musically-inclined son of Zeus and Calliope. Founding members included Harry Connick, both the junior and senior.

In New Orleans, the krewe established themselves as a superkrewe with their first parade in 1994, which rolled with 700 riders. They were the first super Krewe to allow both male and female riders.

The Krewe's throws include a number of popular items including emblem beads, stuffed animals, signature beads, light-up Orpheus medallion beads, cups, three different types of doubloons, and 4-foot-long stuffed dragons.

They have a number of notable floats including the Dolly Trolley, the horse-drawn bus that was used in the opening of Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand, the Smoking Mary which is a six unit float that looks like a steam locomotive, a Trojan horse and the Orpheus Leviathan Float, which is a three unit, 139-foot float, and the first Carnival float to use extensive fiber optic lighting.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Fats Domino wass the honorary grand marshall for 2014. His eldest son, Antoine Domino III, rode in the parade and perform his 85 year old father's music.

In addition to Fats Domino, Quentin Tarantino reigned as the krewe's celebrity monarch.

Two musically gifted women’s lives overlap over the boundaries of time in Rosalyn Story’s novel Sing Her Name. With racism barring her way, a nineteenth century concert artist can never achieve the place in history she deserves. Then, long after her death in poverty and obscurity, a 21st century waitress, talented but musically untaught, has a chance to revive this singer’s name and reach her own success–if her family ties don’t hold her back. Photos made at The Center at Belvedere during the Festival of the Book on 3/23/23.

So I figured that I would take a shot and enter in the Musically Challenged pool after some prodding from Kim. Check out right around 55 seconds in the video for those of you that have never seen it.

Empty lake, empty streets,

the sun goes down alone.

I'm driving by your house

though i know that you're not home...

Olivia is quite musically gifted. She is caught up in playing a beautiful, romantic song on her Barbie violin.

Olivia's been here since November of 2007. Blanches are another Pullip with the kind of colorful faceup I really like. I love all the pink blushiness with her brown eyemakup, dark red lips, and olive green eyes. She's borrowing a Takara Jenny Victorian Excelina's dress. Since the bonnet that goes with it won't fit her big head, I layered some ribbon, lace, and trims to complete her look.

Airborne Toxic Event- Sometime Around Midnight

Thanks for the nice list from whitepuffycloud.

This is a new song for me and I will be checking out this band - which is in part why we play.

And you walk...

under the streetlights

and you're too drunk to notice

that everyone is staring at you

and you so care what you look like

the world is falling

around you

Amazing that she can play two instruments at a time, but can't even remember what she had for breakfast most days.

Believe it or not, Underwhelmed is the furthest thing from my favourite Sloan song. Musically, it's extremely repetitive with a very dry grove; and the bass line was far too easy to learn. But, regardless of it's status in my book, I've always been able to appreciate it. I definitely made it a point to learn the lyrics, and, as I said, I did learn it on bass - after all, it is the song Chris had the kid at Bayfest play along to. Bottom line, I completely appreciate it's historical spot in the fabric of Canadian music; and I love to hear it live, as it is such a fan favourite.

Since the cruise, and this show, however, the song has taken on far too much of a personal meaning too keep it near the bottom of my list - it now represents my two favourite concert moments of all time.

On the cruise, they finally played Underwhelmed during their third and last show and in completely amazing timing, too, as I had to run to go see BNL shortly there after. This was, of course, Chris' opportunity to start going around to the few of us who knew the song with the microphone to let us sing up. (Yup, all six or seven of us - Rainey, Maggie, me and the guys from the Odds.) The excitement shock prevented me from having some immediate recollection of what I sang, but about a week after the cruise I finally remember the lyric I sang.

Fast forward to this evening. By the time this photo was taken, I'd got the attention of Mr. Murphy, who proceeded to then laugh when they got to my verse in Underwhelmed and he realized just what the Hell I was doing and why I had stopped all singing/dancing at the beginning of the second verse - I was preparing to belt out "SHE TOLD ME TO LOOSEN UP ON THE WAY TO THE L.C.!" at the top of my little lungs.

It's still not my favourite song in the world, but as I descended into the dark withdrawal from the euphoric series of events of the past two months, at least I had one last thing to help put a smile back on my face every once in a while.
