Day 8 - Travel to NOLA - February 2024
Founded in 1993, the Krewe of Orpheus takes its name from Zeus and Calliope?s musically inclined son. Founding members include musician/actor Harry Connick, Jr. and his father, Harry Connick, Sr., former New Orleans district attorney. With their first parade in 1994, the Krewe of 700 members established itself as a super Krewe. They were the first super Krewe to allow both male and female riders.
The krewe?s throws include a number of sought-after items, including light-up Orpheus medallion beads, three different types of doubloons - Captain's, Krewe, & Musical Legends, four-foot-long stuffed dragons, and their prized throw is a custom decorated tambourine.
Notable floats include the Dolly Trolley, the horse-drawn bus that was used in the opening of Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand. There?s also the Smoking Mary, an eight-unit float that looks like a steam locomotive. And everyone loves the three-unit, 139-foot Orpheus Leviathan Float, the first Carnival float to use extensive fiber optic lighting.
Over the years, Orpheus monarchs have included Fats Domino, Quentin Tarantino, Sandra Bullock, Glenn Close, Whoopi Goldberg, Stevie Wonder, Laurence Fishburne, Forrest Whitaker, Brad Paisley, Anne Rice and Toby Keith.
Unlike many Carnival events which are members-only, visitors are allowed to buy tickets to the black-tie Orpheuscapade, a musical extravaganza after the parade in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

A super musically-fulfilling night last Thursday! On a commencé avec le compétition de freestyle #LEFREESTYLE avec notre gagnant URBN LOGIX et finaliste ANDROSS. Et vraiment tous les compétiteurs ont démontré un niveau de talent sérieusement impressionant. Un merci à CLAY (EOW) et MARK THE MAGNANIMOUS (qui doublait sur les platines), nos juges pour la soirée. Pour le jam, c'était la 1ère fois qu'on a acceuilli KALIBRE au microphone et BUTTA BEATS (certainement pas un étranger au jam) mais pour la 1ère fois dans le house band comme batteur. De sérieux moments musicaux! Et la piste de danse en feu aussi! Dernièrement il ne faut pas oublié DELI SOKOLOW avec la bonne bouffe.
On est là tous les jeudis pour #LECYPHER, la meilleure jam session de hip-hop et soul à Montréal, animé par URBAN SCIENCE.

Snappy Little Numbers (2019)
I wasn't familiar with Cheap Perfume prior to getting this record in the mail from Snappy Little Numbers. As a label they've got a hell of a track record, so I'm always excited to check out one of their new releases. When it comes to Cheap Perfume, it's a bit of a mixed bag for me. There are elements I enjoy and parts that I'm not as into.
Lyrically, I can say that this is a band that puts a ton of thought and emphasis on the message they are conveying. They deal with sexism, racism, violence, fascism and a myriad of other topics that many bands would shy away from. They tackle these matters with ferocity and vigor. The lyrical structures are done extremely well, nothing feels shoehorned in just to make the rhyme scheme work. There's a narrative to their songs that are really impressive.
Musically, this isn't a band that's really my cup of tea for the bulk of the record. There's kind of a Pretty Girls Make Graves energy to the songs, though most of them don't have the same sort of hooks. The big exception for me is "Fauxminism." This is by far the catchiest song on the record and the vocal melody has the sort of memorable melody that my brain tends to gravitate towards.
A lot of the other songs are more aggressive and sometimes it feels like the dual vocals are fighting rather than complimenting each other. For the style the band is playing, they do a hell of a job. It's just not the sort of thing I tend to listen to as much.

This was one musically busy week:
Mon and Tues were spent rehearsing for an Elvis-themed performance which we did on Wednesday night, Thursday was a night off then Friday we played at a pub in Looe, Saturday we played at a 30th birthday in Newton Abbot and Sunday we practiced for our recording session which is this coming weekend.
Last night I was exhausted, but I enjoyed every single second of it :)
