Today was the longest day EVER! Not sure if it had to do with not having my morning cuban coffee shot b/c I was in an eternal-feeling training class at another building. Anyway, 2 more days left, and then the weekend is here again!

Since he was a youngster, trumpeter and composer Tom Harrell has never stayed stagnant musically. His latest Highnote Records release “Roman Nights” his topped the jazz charts for last two months. Harrell’s group consists of jazz music’s rising superstars that feature Wanye Escoffery on tenor sax, Danny Grissett on piano and Fender Rhodes, Ugonna Okegwo on bass, and Jonathan Blake on drums. This unit has been recording together since 2007.

Tom’s ability to lead has been evident throughout the years with over 25 recordings under his belt and is a staple in the jazz world. He’s played with a plethora of artists ranging from Stan Kenton, Phil Woods, Dizzy Gillespie, Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, and his mentor Horace Silver. As a composer, his music has been played by Vince Guaraldi, Carlos Santana, and Phil Woods.

Since 1967 Tom his been dealing with his bout paranoid schizophrenia. With him being under the constant watch by his wife Angela (who also acts as his manager), the continues to take his medication which hasn’t had an effect on his live and recorded dates.

To order his latest disc or to find out upcoming date, visit his website at www.tomharrell.com.

Shape Hopscotch: an educative way to improve on their fine motor skills, gave a wonderful learning experience.

Wall number game for numeracy was also exciting.

To enhance their literacy skills, they sorted out phonics by sending phonic mails.

Archeologist!! Archeology!!

Yes… at White Fields Nursery, archeologists were busy digging up old remains of dinosaurs and insects.

Kids enjoyed Water play, during which they had to search for the sea animals in their own little sea.

They enjoyed the ring game and painting activities, and also had a great time learning about number 4 and counting with pom poms.

During outdoor game, kids played a "hit the target" game.

The day ended with a balloon tennis game.

A day to explore and to enjoy…

Be my blind.

Be it all the time.

Be it night or day,

Take my sun away, away.

Levolor, which of us is blind?

Levolor, left me in the dark.

Levolor, I can't see a thing but you,

Is it morning?

Blind me please,

I am on my hands and knees.

I can only pray,

Take my sun away, away.

Levolor, which of us is blind?

Levolor, left me in the dark.

Levolor, I can't see a thing but you,

Is it morning?

There's no time for us. There's no place for us.

What is this thing that builds our dreams yet slips away from us?

Who wants to live forever?

Who wants to live forever?....

... not me if I have to hang out with dusty manequins and drink stinky, sulfer water from a dixie cup every day... especially water that comes out of a pipe that pours into an ominous concrete hole in the floor that's adorned with silk flowers...

Thank you John for taking me along!

for my musically inclined friends.....missed playing this.

From my diary:

This was the first time I'd been to a "Musically Speaking" show at the Symphony - this is where the conductor talks about each of the pieces before hand. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not. Especially the part where he has the symphony play excerpts to demonstrate. On the one hand it can be very educational. On the other, having a symphony orchestra play excerpts - yuck! Seems to me like their time is much more precious than that. I also think it sets up too much of an informal mood (not that I didn't enjoy the conductors jokes, some unintentional it seemed) - I don't think they players were at their usual level.

First were two pieces by Brazilian composers. The first (Passacaglia for the New Millenium by Krieger) was very odd - there were parts I enjoyed but it was difficult to stay with it. The second, Bachianas Brasileiras No. 4 by Villa-Lobos, was a bit more engaging. I liked the second movement the best. After the intermission was Pictures.... I had a hard time to keep from comparing it to the organ version I love so much. Even now, I can't help thinking it just didn't live up. I think partly it's Ravel's orchestration - some of the more potent moments just seem to fall flat. What I wouldn't give to see Jean Guillou play it. I see he has a website, too bad it is in French. I'll have to keep my eye on that.

you guys know i love high keys

Take me out to the Ballgame

Take me out to the ball game

Take me out to the crowd.

Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks

I don't care if I ever get back,

'Cause it's root, root, root

For the home team.

If they don't win it's a shame.

For it's one, two, three strikes

You're out

At the old ball game.

Soul Suckers - Amos Lee

Does it make you feel good,

when they tell you what you want to hear?

And after they suck all your soul,

well that's when they'll disappear.

Disappear.

They disappear forever.....

Like a prince in your little fairy tale.

And you will find,

one day you put you soul on sale..

Nothing could be further from the truth,

my love..

And nothing is more powerful than beauty in a wicked world.

In 2007 I wasn't in the best place musically. I had been working in the music industry since 2000. I'd been exposed to countless mediocre and even more terrible bands. I felt like I hadn't heard too much to really excite me in such a long time. Frankly, I was completely burned out on music. Aside from the occasional John Reis project, I was just kind of over everything. The Statues fixed that.

I heard of the record New People Make Us Nervous from a friend of mine named Omar who lived in Montreal. We both came up on some of the same awesome Canadian power pop punk bands and he assured me that I would dig this band called Statues. I emailed the band and bought a copy from them. I was totally blown away.

This band played such incredibly catchy music. They had ridiculous energy and hooks for days. I was enthralled. I told everyone I knew about this band. I started hunting down every crazy variant of every crazy record. I just couldn't get enough. Sadly, Statues recently played their last show up in Canada. I never got the chance to see them play live, which is a crime. Though I didn't like their most recent full length, Holiday Cops, anywhere near as much as New People Make Us Nervous, I will never forget how that record opened up my eyes and reminded me that even though I'm getting older, there is still new music worth listening to.

The Who - #45/52 for my Musically Inspired set

"Layin' on my back

In the newly mown grass.

Rain is coming down,

But I know the clouds will pass.

You bring me tea,

Say "the babe's a-sleepin'".

Lay down beside me.

Love ain't for keeping."

... I finally got around to making a photo for this song. I had bigger plans for how I was going to do it (like a backlit sprinkler making the 'rain') but glad I got the song into the set all the same. With 7 more images to go, there are a few songs I had plans for but they just won't get in...

John Paul Young - #12/52 for my Musically Inspired set lyrics

Love is in the air,

In the whisper of the trees.

Love is in the air,

In the thunder of the sea...

Sherry gets the credit for spotting this heart shaped branch/vine... Someday I'll be able to catch a good sunset behind it, but the weather has not cooperated the last few days...

I am so musically-challenged. I can't play an instrument, can't sing, and can't dance, but I do love music. I'm so in awe of those people who are musically gifted.

For Shannon Jax's week on Musically Challenged..

I love this kind of atmospheric, jazzy, sexy groove, where the message isn't too profound, and the music is simple and lets your mind wander where it will. Mine was wandering back to the summer, after having stood and watched the gas pump fill the tank ever so slowly this evening. I had to get gas tonight, but the wind was whipping and the temperature was a wet 30 degrees and dropping fast. And I was thinking about how pleasant it was to fill the tank at night in the summer, with a warm breeze wafting through the night - instead of this lashing, stinging wind...

"Breathe" by Telepopmusik

I brought you some something close to me

And left with something new

I can see through your head

You haunt my dreams

But theres nothing to do but believe

Just believe

Just breathe

Another day

Just believe

Another day

Just breathe

Another day

Just believe

Another day

Just breathe

I’m used to it by now

When I was young, I just loved the melody... But now as I read the lyrics - I have some perspective on exactly what they are saying. That as I revisit the places that stir memories of the people I've known and loved - as I hold those memories dear - that I will remember that "I love you more"... What a great message to keep in mind. The past has a tendency to take on a gloss that hides all the bad parts, and can make you forget why they are in the past. Something caused us to make the decisions we've made that brought us to where we are - and it's a wise man who appreciates the one he's with now.. I know I do...

There are places I remember

All my life, though some have changed

Some forever not for better

Some have gone and some remain

All these places had their moments

With lovers and friends I still can recall

Some are dead and some are living

In my life I've loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers

there is no one compares with you

And these memories lose their meaning

When I think of love as something new

Though I know I'll never lose affection

For people and things that went before

I know I'll often stop and think about them

In my life I love you more

Though I know I'll never lose affection

For people and things that went before

I know I'll often stop and think about them

In my life I love you more

In my life I love you more
