Vusi Mahlasela

Guiding Star (Naledi Ya Tsela)- ATO Records- March 6, 2007

One of the hardest things to learn as a musician is when to not only recognize inspiration, but when to trust and follow it. Over a musically and socially consequential career, South African singer-songwriter and poet-activist Vusi Mahlasela has successfully followed his muse. That trust in his gift is at the root of his latest album, Guiding Star.

Mahlasela wrote and recorded this album as he toured the globe. Its soul-stirring title is very much a product of the new friends he's met and experiences he's had touring. Bearing the influences of various music and voices from throughout the world, Guding Star features guest appearances from friend (and partial ATO Records label head) Dave Matthews ('Sower of Words'), band leader and Allman Brothers guitarist Derek Trucks ('Tibidi Waka'), Australian didgeridoo star Xavier Rudd ('Chamber of Justice'), singer-songwriter Jem ('Everytime') and longtime friends and touring mates Ladysmith Black Mambazo ('Heaven In My Heart'). Mahlasela also drew on the talents of numerous South African guests, including the legendary 'Black Moses' Ngwenya of the Soul Brothers, the children's choir from the Agnes Chidi School in his home Township, Mamelodi, and the KCC Gospel, among many others.

Mahlasela, an accomplished guitarist, percussionist, composer, arranger, band leader and performer, has bridged generations at home and abroad. His sound is a hybrid of folk, world, blues and soul, one that connects South Africa's Apartheid-scarred past with its promise for a better future. Over the past three years of heavy, world-wide touring and spreading his message, Mahlasela has remained true to his roots.

The bulk of Guiding Star was recorded on a farm in rural South Africa. Like any Vusi Mahlasela album, there are songs that connect him and the people of South Africa with both their past, present, and hopes for a better future: 'Song for Thandi' tells the story of detained freedom fighter Thandi Modise, while the affecting 'Sower of Words'—featuring Dave Matthews—is a lament for the late Black Consciousness poet and writer Ingoapele Madingoane, who wrote the influential poem 'Africa My Beginning, Africa My Ending.'

'There's a part on it where I needed a very strong voice to drive the message across, and Dave was the perfect voice,' Mahlasela says of the latter. 'Dave adds passionate, rich vocals to this song, taking it to a new level.'

Born Vusi Sidney Mahlasela Ka Zwane in 1965 in Lady Selborne, South Africa, Mahlasela became enchanted by music at an early age, building his first guitar out of tin and fishing line. Reared in Mamelodi Township, a vibrant artist community where he still resides, he gravitated toward poetry and songwriting as a teen, eventually joining youth organizations protesting South Africa's separatist, white government.

Reading poems at night vigils, funerals and anti-Apartheid marches triggered a long streak of police harassment. Local police soon began requiring that he keep them abreast of his whereabouts at all times, and his poems and songs were routinely confiscated—forcing him to memorize his work. It was a time when people like him would 'just disappear indefinitely,' he recalls, or, in Mahlasela's case, be held for periods of time. 'Somehow you get some sort of courage. You look at what's happening to your comrades, and you see that their struggle has to be testified—and you don't have to be afraid.'

In 1988, he joined the Congress of South African Writers, developing a new level of confidence as a poet and a writer. He struck up a creative friendship with South African poet Lesego Rampolokeng (who joins Mahlasela and Dave Matthews on 'Sower of Words'), while falling under the spell of artists like Miriam Makeba and Phillip Tabane and the work of Victor Jara— all central influences on Mahlasela's music and lyrics.

Mahlasela never knew his father, finally locating him in 2000, sadly, six months after his death. When he was in his early 20s, his mother collapsed in church, dying the same day, just a year after she'd proudly held his first recording in her hands and wept. He wrote the new song 'River Jordan' for her, and it was with her inspiration and the motivation of leaders like Nelson Mandela that Mahlasela crafter his official debut, 1991's When You Come Back, produced by Lloyd Ross, who returns to the controls for Guiding Star.

After the end of Apartheid, Vusi performed at Mandela's inauguration in 1994, and is now an ambassador to Mandela's 46664 Foundation, a campaign to help raise Global awareness of Aids/ HIV. Mahlasela proudly promotes Mandela's message at all of his performances. Having released a string of albums in South Africa, it wasn't until the debut in 2003 of the documentary film Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony, a film that charts South Africans' longtime struggle for racial equality, that Americans first glimpsed and heard Mahlasela. In a rave Los Angeles Times review, noted critic Robert Hilburn wrote: 'Vusi Mahlasela's voice is so pure and commanding; you wonder whether you should have gotten an entire album by him.'

Later that year, Americans did, with The Voice, a collection of the best songs from his catalog, all released for the first time in U.S. via the ATO Records label (co-owned by longtime fan and fellow South African Dave Matthews, who calls Mahlasela 'one of the most important influences of my life.). It was an album so chock full of beauty, soul and struggle that it had a profound effect on American listeners in the wake of 9/11—even though much of the album wasn't sung in English.

And that's a power that Mahlasela doesn't take lightly. A single listen to Guiding Star, is all one needs to be assured that Mahlasela is a gifted performer. And with that gift comes responsibility, says Vusi: 'I know that I have something that is like a borrowed fire from God. And I have to use it in a very positive way.'

Day 8 - Travel to NOLA - February 2024

Founded in 1993, the Krewe of Orpheus takes its name from Zeus and Calliope?s musically inclined son. Founding members include musician/actor Harry Connick, Jr. and his father, Harry Connick, Sr., former New Orleans district attorney. With their first parade in 1994, the Krewe of 700 members established itself as a super Krewe. They were the first super Krewe to allow both male and female riders.

The krewe?s throws include a number of sought-after items, including light-up Orpheus medallion beads, three different types of doubloons - Captain's, Krewe, & Musical Legends, four-foot-long stuffed dragons, and their prized throw is a custom decorated tambourine.

Notable floats include the Dolly Trolley, the horse-drawn bus that was used in the opening of Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand. There?s also the Smoking Mary, an eight-unit float that looks like a steam locomotive. And everyone loves the three-unit, 139-foot Orpheus Leviathan Float, the first Carnival float to use extensive fiber optic lighting.

Over the years, Orpheus monarchs have included Fats Domino, Quentin Tarantino, Sandra Bullock, Glenn Close, Whoopi Goldberg, Stevie Wonder, Laurence Fishburne, Forrest Whitaker, Brad Paisley, Anne Rice and Toby Keith.

It's a new week of songs in Musically Challenged, this time chosen by the wonderful Hurley*83.

I am not a big country fan, but the words to this song kinda fit perfectly about the way I feel.

Playing around with my homemade snoot some more. Didn't do much in processing, thought that was fitting for the song as well:-)

Common Man by John Conlee

As the maid poured wine and we prepared to dine I know I was feeling out of place

At table as large big as a river barge and I love you written all on your face

I appreciate your hospitality but I wish that we would go

Let me drive us to McDonald’s and I’ll talk to you concerning something you should really know

I’m just a common man drive a common van

My dog ain’t got a no pedigree

If I have my say, gonna stay that way

Cause high-browed people lose their sanity

And a common man is what I’ll be

I’ll take a Chevrolet just any day so give your daddy back his Mercedes Benz

And there’s some common people that I hang out with

They’re my good time buddies they’re my friends

And I’d rather chug-a-lug a mug of Budweiser beer then sip a crystal glass of wine

So won’t you make your mind up to believe in me and leave this high living world behind?

I’m just a common man drive a common van

My dog ain’t got a no pedigree

If I have my say, gonna stay that way

Cause high-browed people lose their sanity

And a common man is what I’ll be

Yes I’m happy just being free

And I’m happy just being me

And I hope that you will see

I’m just a common man drive a common van

My dog ain’t got a no pedigree

If I have my say, gonna stay that way

Cause high-browed people lose their sanity

And a common man is what I’ll be

I’m just a common man drive a common van

During the late 1960’s Jazz music was undergoing a major metamorphosis. Miles Davis was musically in transition and went from the traditional acoustic quartet to a more funky electronic sound. Out went the stand-up bass and came the electronic bass. Out with the standard piano and came the Fender Rhodes. Many musicians in what would be hailed as Fusion jazz phase, took rock, soul, and other free form elements and centered it with an electronic base. Musicians like Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Les McCann, Herbie Hancock, and Stevie Wonder used the Fender Rhodes as not a replacement to the standard piano, but as a means to create and experimental sound to evolve with the new music that took the world by storm.

Pianist and keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith is a pioneer in the fusion jazz/funk whelm, in that he came out of the gospel and mainstream jazz tradition and created his own flair of music that many musicians from Guru to Jamiroquai to Masters at Work have emulated in soul, hip-hop, and Latin music. Lonnie’s group “The Cosmic Echoes” music is still being sampled by hip-hop and R & B artists as well still played in dance clubs all over the world.

Lonnie Liston Smith, Jr. was born on December 28, 1940 in Richmond, Virginia. Music was always part of Lonnie’s life. His father, Lonnie Liston Smith, was one of the founding members of The Harmonizing Four, which were one of many pioneering gospel groups during the 1930’s to 1950’s. As a child he was exposed to many of the gospel music greats like The Soul Stirrers featuring vocalist Sam Cooke and The Swan Silvertones. Lonnie’s father bought a piano and taught anyone who wanted to learn. He was bitten by the music bug at an early age and by the time he graduated from high school, Lonnie had become an accomplished pianist as well as trumpet and tuba player.

Upon graduating from Morgan State University in the early 1960’s he moved to New York City where he eventually graduated from school of jazz. Playing and backing the likes of Art Blakey, Roland Kirk, Pharaoh Sanders, Gato Barbieri, Betty Carter, Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, and Miles Davis.

It was during the early 1970’s that Lonnie was introduced to the Fender Rhodes electric piano. While recording saxophonist Pharaoh Sander’s “Thembi” recording on Impulse Records, that he played the instrument for the first time. In fact, he wrote “Astral Traveling” in the first 10 minutes that he first tinkered with the Rhodes. Sanders loved the song and recorded it that afternoon. It was also during his recording with Pharaoh that he became friends with legendary record producer Bob Thiele, founder of Flying Dutchman Records. Thiele, whose legendary work includes producing the late Buddy Holly and all of John Coltrane’s sessions while at Impulse Records, extended the offer for Lonnie to record his first record.

In 1973 Lonnie formed The Cosmic Echoes and would record music and a sound that was different during the 1970’s. His first band consisted of bassist Cecil McBee, percussionist James Mtume, guitarist Joe Beck, saxophonist George Barron, and drummer David Lee, Jr. Lonnie’s debut recording “Astral Traveling” came out to rave reviews. This was also the same time that Lonnie was touring with trumpeter Miles Davis who had just recorded and released “On The Corner” and “Big Fun.” For almost 14 years The Cosmic Echos recorded fourteen records which included “Expansions,” “Cosmic Funk,” and “Loveland.”

During the mid-1980’s into the mid-1990’s Lonnie recorded many trio jazz recordings as well as paired up with the late rapper Guru for his landmark Jazzmatazz recording. Over the years Lonnie’s music has been sampled and rediscovered by a new legion of R & B and Hip-Hop artists. Some of them include: Young Jeezy, O.C., Jay-Z, Digable Planets, Mary J. Blige, and Nikki Jean.

Today Lonnie is still on the road as part of the “Soulful Nights of Keys” tour featuring Mark Adams and the legendary Brian Jackson. Also, he’s in the studio recording new music. For more information on Lonnie’s upcoming club dates please visit him on the web at www.lonnielistonsmith.net.

so many visions still to see

and many travails before I may sleep

but then when I sleep

oh such reveries

- Duncan Sheik, Such Reveries

This week's challenge in Project SoulPancake is to stay up all night. Not even a month ago, this would have been an easy challenge for me. I was routinely staying up all night. Reading, watching tv, playing around online. These days, I rarely stay up past eleven. That's because I have my alarm set for 7am every morning so I can go write. And I have to say, I kind of love my new schedule. Hell, I pulled all-nighters all the time in college and law school. There's a certain magic about seeing the sun come up when you haven't gone to sleep (or is that just the mania caused by sleep deprivation?). Either way, I've been there many times. I'm going to give it a go tonight, but I have a feeling I'm going to earn myself a big fail on this week's challenge. I guess I'll go back and officially check it off next time I accidentally get caught up reading a good book and don't turn in until 6am. It's been known to happen.

Also? I swooped in and picked the songs this week in the Musically Challenged group. All of my picks are straight off of my monster-sized writing playlist. So if you want to listen to a few of the songs that have been helping me get this book written, you should check in and play along. :)

i love that when I tell the hubs that I want to do make-up like in the video, he doesn't blink and even asks if we're going to sit down for dinner before I even wash it off. So normal. The Tweedles didn't even care I put them to bed like this. Bwahahaha! AJ even called me a princess. ♥

Hero~ Enrique Iglesias

(Whispered) Let me be your hero

Would you dance if I asked you to dance?

Would you run and never look back

Would you cry if you saw me crying

Would you save my soul tonight?

Would you tremble if I touched your lips?

Would you laugh oh please tell me these

Now would you die for the one you love?

Hold me in your arms tonight?

I can be you hero baby

I can kiss away the pain

I will stand by you forever

You can take my breath away

Would you swear that you'll always be mine?

Would you lie would you run away

Am I in to deep?

Have I lost my mind?

I don't care you're here tonight

I just want to hold you

Am I in too deep?

Have I lost my mind?

Well I don't care you're here tonight

You can take my breath my breath away

I can be your hero

With the year coming to a close and winter in full swing, I think its common to reflect back on the previous twelve months. Overall, its been a year of ups and downs, with my personal life and academic career contributing to both sides of the cycle. In terms of building, I'm not wholly satisfied with the amount I was able to do. I'm still continuing with the project of reworking my old models, and unfortunately, that has detracted from me building completely original models. While I wish to confidently say that'll change next year, I fear that the time I want to dedicate to building will only shrink.

That being said, I've been more than happy with the reception my posts have been getting on here, both during this year and the previous one. While I was unable to finish the current model I'm working on, I thought to close out this year, I'd take out one of my newer figs for a quick shoot. Despite a drop in the snow which I had to clean off quickly because of how rapidly the lighting was deteriorating, I'd say it turned out well.

Here's to another year!~

I am really liking this musically challenged group.

HNSLKLAT - Happy Not So Low Key Lame Ass Thursday!

I had no idea what to do for my 52 weeks photo and then I remembered an SP that HardyC had done a few weeks ago. Thought I would give it a shot.

One thing is for sure, I have the most whacked out, asymmetrical head!! Look how messed up my ears are, and my busted nose is all jacked up, WTF? LOL

So for shits and giggles I did two Symmetrical versions of this shot, they are in the comments. One Left side mirrored and one Right side mirrored.

And after seeing those I don't mind being a little off ;-)

But I guess thats what makes me, me.

Pearl Jam's Just Breathe

FGR: Silhouettes

As I was driving this morning the song from Pearl Jam "Just Breath" came on and I had this image in my brain of a photograph I wanted to do. I stopped at the fabric store and bought the fabric and when I came out there was a torrential down pour. It was just dumping buckets of rain. There went my idea, except I couldn't think of anything else. All day long as I went about my "business" I kept trying to think of things to do all the while BUCKETS OF RAIN! While I was helping my kids do their homework the sun came out and the rain went away so I grabbed my camera and headed outside. Holy Moly, I was quite the sight. My fabric flew away at one point and I was running down the field chasing it and I was very afraid my tripod would blow over. The image isn’t quite what I had in mind but almost and I am exhausted so I am going with what I got.

By the way, our dog came home today but he is not out of the woods. It will be something that we will have to manage the rest of his life and keep a very good eye on him .

Day 50!! YAY!!

Some advice for the college kid and soon to be graduate from the Just graduated graduate:

Talk to everyone, form relationships, form a network and if your good and a decent person - when its time to ask for help, find a job or whatever - tap into those networks.

One of my mom's clients called me back today regarding job openings at her company. She wants my resume (!!)

Hopefully this works out along with the finance firm. I have to call him back tomorrow :)

Things are looking up! :)

Kerry and I celebrated 10 months together today - geez how time flies! I can't believe it's almost a freaking year. Time goes by so quickly that I panic sometimes and wish it would just SLOW DOWN.

a year of my life in general has nearly passed before my eyes and I only have a handful of photographs to commemorate it.

well, that's why this 365 is for! I want to remember this time - this new chapter in my life! :D

PS Ive secured by Strobist Profile Subject. Now I just have to arrange the location and plan the photo. :D

TOTW: Seven Deadly Sins - Sloth - I'm super duper lazy

Musically Challenged: Whiskey Lullaby

Two weeks in NOLA for the mardi gras 2017

Founded in 1993, the Krewe of Orpheus takes its name from the musically-inclined son of Zeus and Calliope. Founding members included Harry Connick, both the junior and senior.

In New Orleans, the krewe established themselves as a superkrewe with their first parade in 1994, which rolled with 700 riders. They were the first super Krewe to allow both male and female riders.

The Krewe's throws include a number of popular items including emblem beads, stuffed animals, signature beads, light-up Orpheus medallion beads, cups, three different types of doubloons, and 4-foot-long stuffed dragons.

They have a number of notable floats including the Dolly Trolley, the horse-drawn bus that was used in the opening of Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand, the Smoking Mary which is a six unit float that looks like a steam locomotive, a Trojan horse and the Orpheus Leviathan Float, which is a three unit, 139-foot float, and the first Carnival float to use extensive fiber optic lighting.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Fats Domino wass the honorary grand marshall for 2014. His eldest son, Antoine Domino III, rode in the parade and perform his 85 year old father's music.

In addition to Fats Domino, Quentin Tarantino reigned as the krewe's celebrity monarch.

Even though Tomorrowland already has the reputation of 'the most beautiful festival of the summer', they are taking everything up another step ... both musically as organizationally ... The - bigger than ever - line-up gives us the best dance music in the world. And with dance music they mean it in the broadest sense of its meaning. It goes from electro to trance, from progressive to hardstyle, from club to drum 'n' bass, from minimal to eclectic, from techno to 90's... no less than 20 stages scattered over 2 days !

Tomorrowland 2010: Yesterday is History, Today is a Gift, Tomorrow is Mystery. The 6th edition of Tomorrowland takes place The next Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 July 2010. The most attractive and talked-about festival in Belgium will be organised again, at the De Schorre leisure complex in Boom. Ticket sales started in April, and most of the festival goers bought their tickets in advance. The 90,000 tickets of the 2009 edition were sold out in advance last year.

The fifth edition of Tomorrowland, in July 2009, was a sun-drenched and overwhelming success. A festival like a fairytale, in a unique setting. With no fewer than 90,000 exuberant visitors. Tomorrowland has already become one of the benchmarks, but also the odd man out in the busy Belgian festival summer, after 5 editions. The ID&T will leave no stone unturned again in 2010 to exceed high expectations. In the meantime, the programme looks incredible once more. There is a balanced mix of the biggest, hippest, most highly reputed and popular names from all possible sub-genres within dance. This includes David Guetta, Armin van Buuren, Swedish House Mafia, Jeff Mills, Ritchie Hwatin, Sasha, Roger Sanchez, Martin Solveig, Scooter, Derrick May, Dennis Ferrer, Loco Dice, Grooverider, John Dahlbäck, Dada Life and many others...

Last year demand for camping was much greater than the number of places available, so ID&T is also very satisfied that the camping capacity for 2010 can be doubled.

Tomorrowland guarantees a wonderful festival weekend. There is no other festival at which you can toboggan on genuine snow, where there is a choice between so many different stages, where you can celebrate on a genuine beach or in a small cave, enjoy Jacuzzis or a massage salon with a fantastic view of the main podium, where you have the biggest final fireworks, and so much more...
