I pulled my stage piano out of the closet, replaced some contact pads, and started getting her in shape for the big Intellectz reunion in September. This year were descending on the small mountain town of Arnold for a weekend of rollicking noise and fun. Keep an eye on the local police blotter.

LeDuff Musical Instrument Collection
The two little woven coir ones (left foreground) each contain several tiny metal jingle bells and there is little space within for the jingles to move. As a result, when shaken you hear several light metallic tings. The coir doesn't muffle the sound but I would say softens it slightly. All the other rattles contain river pebbles and have bottoms composed of dried gourd. The dried gourd bottom is hard and when struck by the pebbles has a crisp sound. When the pebbles hit the sides of the rattle the sound is soft and diminished. A good musician can roll the pebbles on the inner sides and create a lovely prolonged softer sound to contrast with the raspier harder sounds produced when shaken towards the gourd bottom. To the far left are a pair of midsize double rattles, each having a U shaped handle. (You can see them clearly in my other photo). In all cases, the quality of sound is dependent on the skill and knowledge of the percussionist.
A purchase in Greece. It has a fipple (like recorders and penny whistles) and it's "key specific", like a penny whistle (this one is in D). It has a hole in the back (as does a recorder, but not a penny whistle). Although some web pages say their range is two octaves, I haven't found that yet on this one, and haven't gotten a clean note past the first octave. It's made of cane, according to tradition, and has a soft tone.

Rug////Tapestry = Your choice
This rug or tapestry was a favorite of mine for years before I regretfully gave it away during one of our cleaning binges. I used it as a wall art showing off it's soft orange, white and brown color hues. Dated 60''s or early 70's. Material had a soft furry feel.
"The nagara is the most widespread of the membranophone instruments. There are several types of nagara, which is considered to be the lead instrument in folk ceremonies and weddings. The nagara differs in size and goes by various names such as "boyuk nagara" (big naghara), "cura nagara" (small naghara), "chiling naghara"(played with drum sticks), "Qoltuq nagara" (drum held under the arm), gosha naghara (Naqareh), and "el naghara" (hand naghara)."

This week I went for a selfie featuring my three guitars. My Dobro, George Benson and Spanish guitar. There is a bit of His Master Voice" (HMV) in this picture as well, can you spot him?

This is a self-portrait of my hand. Don't be distracted by the vintage 1957 Selmer Mark VI tenor saxophone in the background.
Strobist info:
Two Nikon SB900 speedlights were used, both camera left. One was bare and pointed at the saxophone; the other was focused on the hand, with a snoot and red Rogue gel (for added texture when converted to monochrome). Both flashes were triggered by three PocketWizard Plus X's.
