Isn’t multiplication fun!!

This self commissioned piece became quite a challenge for the studio. The brief was to create an aesthetically pleasing and useful multiplication table for children, but one which would look great up on their parents’ wall. With so much information to impart, it had primarily to work for it’s intended purpose – as an aid to study. Unnecessary design fripperies were out. The result gave free reign to the studio’s ‘type’ nerds; hopefully contributing to the numerical literacy of a new generation (and creating a few more ‘type’ obsessives) in the process.

The Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fish is a Roman Catholic church located in Tabgha, on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee in Israel. The modern church rests on the site of two earlier churches.

The earliest recording of a church commemorating Jesus' feeding of the 5,000 is by the Spanish pilgrim Egeria circa 380. "Not far away from there (Capernaum) are some stone steps where the Lord stood. And in the same place by the sea is a grassy field with plenty of hay and many palm trees. By them are seven springs, each flowing strongly. And this is the field where the Lord fed the people with the five loaves and two fishes. In fact the stone on which the Lord placed the bread has now been made into an altar. Past the walls of this church goes the public highway on which the Apostle Matthew had his place of custom. Near there on a mountain is a cave to which the Saviour climbed and spoke the Beatitudes."

The church was significantly enlarged around the year 480 with floor mosaics also added at this time. These renovations are attributed to the patriarch Matryrios. In 614 Persians destroyed the original Byzantine church, and the exact site of the shrine was lost for some 1,300 years. In 1888 the site was acquired by the German Catholic Society (Deutsche Katholische Palaestinamission) which was associated with the Archdiocese of Cologne. An initial archaeological survey was conducted in 1892, with full excavations beginning in 1932. These excavations resulted in the discovery of mosaic floors from the 5th-century church, which was also found to be built on the foundations of a much smaller 4th-century chapel. The current church was built to the same floor plan as the 5th-century Byzantine church. Since 1939 it has been administered by the Benedictine order as a daughter-house of the Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem.

#799 - 365 2010 Day 68: I am remembering a pertinent idea today. It is the idea of multiplication.

People often ask me how I possibly fit so much into my days, and yet still find time for a photograph, or photography even. The answer is that I don't divide or split my resources among many activities, or even divide what I do into a finite time available; I multiply everything.

That means giving my full attention to what I am doing in the moment ... multiplying my energy by how many things I have to do.

Today I was out at 8:20 to see a friend about my knee problem at 9:00. It doesn't take me 40 minutes to get there usually, but it might ... so I left early, which gave me five minutes to stop at a local country park. During those five minutes I made a pleasing photograph (this one) and watched a coot, whilst feeling the cold air.

Then I invested in a long and fruitful session of mutual exchange, receiving knee treatment and exploring photography through a little philosophical discussion.

This afternoon I have completed some important work, taken delivery of a new sofa, planned a cricket session, had it cancelled and rearranged, and uploaded this photograph. There is more to do yet ...

Such a flow of activity could feel really frenetic - indeed it sometimes does; you know that. On those days I am dividing my available energy by the things I have to do. But today, each activity, given full attention, is complete and fulfilling. And time seems to go more slowly, expanding, multiplying to fit what it is that I have to do.

The differences are probably all down to my state of mind at any time. Which proves that it is always how I feel that matters most, not the activities themselves. When we are aware enough of our emotions not to get stressed, there is no stress ...

I don't know if any of this makes sense. But try multiplying instead of dividing ...
