Listed in NR: 01/18/1994
Designated an NHL: 12/16/1993
This formidable brick mass represents a type of building that served in the dual capacity of military functions and social clubhouse for units of the National Guard. The type was popular in late-19th-cenutry America, but this particular armory is nationally significant for another reason. It was the site of the Armory Show – the 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art. This was the first major exhibition of contemporary art in America, and it revolutionized the nation’s artistic tastes and perceptions. Some 1,300 works of art were displayed, and here for the first time many Americans saw the works of Cezanne, Van Gogh, Matisse, and Picasso.
