The good old Ghantagar. I have so many memories here. The first time I visited Multan this was the first building that stood out and the one I used to navigate me to a friends house and my hotel. I can almost feel its formidable presence in fornt of me right now! It is over 100 years old and was built by the British. There are many clock towers in Pakistan, mostly from the British era.
The Multan Fort, a Pakistani military installation, was a landmark of Indian defence and architecture. It was built near the city of Multan, in Punjab province, on a hillock separated from the city by the Ravi River. The fort was destroyed by British forces during the British occupation of India.
The fort was notable both for its effectiveness as a defence installation and for its architecture. Contemporary reports put the walls of the fort at 40 to 70 feet (21 m) high and 6,800 feet (2 km) in circumference. The fort's 46 bastions included two flanking towers at each of the four gates (the De, Sikki, Hareri and Khizri Gates). A ditch 25 feet (7.6 m) deep and 40 feet (12 m) wide and an 18-foot (5.5 m) glacis protected the fort from intruders.
Within the fort stood a citadel flanked by 30 towers, enclosing mosques, a Hindu temple and a Khan's palace. The citadel was severely damaged by the battering it got from the guns of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1818.
The Fort was originally known as Katochgarh and is attributed to have been built by the Katoch Dynasty.

Multan's most prominent landmark, now largely in ruins except for its gate and part of the outer walls and bastions, is Qasim Bagh Fort, near Hussain Agahi and Chowk Bazaars. In the fort is the Qasim Bagh Stadium that occasionally hosts cricket matches.
Apart from the shrines, most of the fort was destroyed by the British in 1848-49 to avenge the death of Lieutenant Alexander vans Agnew, killed in Multan by order of the Sikh governor. Agnew's memorial obelisk stands on a plinth at one of the highest points of the fort mound. Qasim Bagh, the small garden after which the fort now takes its name, and the large Qasim Bagh Stadium lie to the south. Although you can still walk most of the way around the ruined ramparts, the most impressive remains are by the main entrance from Kutchery Rd, a major hub of Multan. The British gun emplacement at the south of the mound is the place for a panoramic photograph of the town.
At one time the fort had a circumference of 2000m and was protected by 46 towers, four main gates and the Ravi River, which used to flow between the fort and old town.
Yesterday I tried making Gol Guppay for the first time and I wanted them to be like I always had them in my hometown, Multan. They are less tangy, more spicy and full of flavour than a regular pani puri (or i like to think so because i have a long history with them)
These specific Multani style Gol Guppay have spicy channay (garbanzo bean) boondi, (tiny dumplings)and piyaz (onion) dipped in dahi (yougurt). Raita has few pinches of chaat Masala, salt, black pepper and dried mint. Few teaspoons of water in yougurt will make its consistency just perfect to go into the puri easily.
I am so happy that my experiment turned out so good and eating gol guppay on a hot afternoon certainly reminded me of blazing Summers in Multan.
My paitu friends! Next time when you are in my neck of woods, come over and we'll have our very own chat patta Gol Guppa Party.

Standing at the north-eastern fringe of the ancient fort of Multan, is the eternal abode of Al-Sheikh Al-Kabir Sheikh-ul-Islam Baha-ud-Din Abu Muhammad Zakaria Al-Qureshi Al-Asadi, one of the greatest saints of the Suhrawardiya Silsila and one of the most distinguished disciples of Sheikh Al-Shuyukh Shahab Al-Din Suhrawardy. He was the founder of Suhrawardiya Silsila in the Sub-Continent. He was born in 1170. the shrine was built in 1263.
The prime attraction of the Fort area is the Mausoleum generally known as Bahawal Haq (the ornament of the Faith). The dome of the Mausoleum is visible from miles and dominates the skyline of Multan.
Sheikh Baha-ud-Din Zakariya known as Bahawal Haq was born at Kot Kehror, a town of Layyah District near Multan, around 1170. For 15 years he went from place to place to preach Islam and after his wanderings Bahawal Haq settled in Multan in 1222. He died in 1267. The Mausoleum is a square of 51 feet 9 inches, measured internally. Above this is an octagon, about half the height of the square, which is surmounted by a hemispherical dome. The Mausoleum was almost completely ruined during the siege of 1848, but was soon afterwards restored by the Muslims.
Date leaves basket weaving is a traditional handicraft in Multan, a city in Pakistan. The art of weaving baskets using date palm leaves has been passed down through generations and is still practiced by local artisans today.
The process of making date leaves baskets starts with harvesting the leaves from the date palm tree. The leaves are then cleaned and dried in the sun before being woven into baskets of various shapes and sizes. The weaving is done using a simple technique that involves folding and twisting the leaves to create a sturdy and durable basket.
Date leaves baskets are popular in Multan and are used for a variety of purposes, including carrying groceries, storing household items, and even as decorative pieces. The baskets are known for their durability and strength, as well as their unique and intricate designs.
Visitors to Multan can find date leaves baskets at local markets and handicraft stores, where they can observe the weaving process and purchase baskets to take home as souvenirs. The baskets make excellent gifts and are a great way to support local artisans and preserve traditional crafts.
