The citadel of Saladin - and indeed, the Cairo skyline - is dominated by the Alabaster Mosque, or Mosque of Mohammed Ali. Modelled along classic Turkish lines, it took 18 years to build (1830 - 1848) although later the domes had to be rebuilt. It was commissioned by Mohammad Ali, ruler of Egypt from 1805 - 1849, who lies in the marble tomb on the right as you enter.

Sir Muhammed Iqbal lauded Himalayas with his poetry :

You are the diwan whose opening verse is the sky

You lead Man to the solitudes of his heart's retreat

Snow has endowed you with the turban of honour

Which scoffs at the crown of the world-illuminating sun

The mountain top's lightning has given a whip

In the hands of cloud for the ambling horse

O Himalah! Are you like a theater stage

Which nature's hand has made for its elements?

A better view now..

The prophet Muhammed (PBUH) used to stand in this pulpit.. It was the from where he gave his religious and philosophical sermons including his first recitations of the messages he received from the angel Gabriel which are now the contents of the Quran.

He also led prayer 5 times a day from here for the early muslims of Madinah.

The Cleveland Clinic - Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. Located at the intersection of Bonneville Avenue and Grand Central Parkway in Las Vegas, Nevada. Perspective from the South looking North.

Lots of comments at this link address from people who live in Las Vegas, as well as a summary of the inception.

The building of the Clinic began with the ground breaking on 9 February 2007, and opened on 13 July 2009 at a cost of $70 million dollars; the property was donated by The City Of Las Vegas. The founders of Keep Memory Alive suffered great personal tragedy, and have funded the construction of the Clinic. It is located in the now very robust Symphony Park Development.

Seid stark. Bleibt stark.

The lines on the palm of the hand have arabic writing reading 'Muhammed' and 'Salaam' (which means 'Peace').

I met this beautiful and lively young artist who showed me the arabic 'writing' in her painting, and there was me thinking it was *just* a hand, what a lovely idea mashAllah.

The hand in the painting is modelled from her own. The writing inspired by her love for Peace and prophet Muhammed together with all the prophets and messengers (may peace and blessings be upon them all) who went before him.

Muslims believe that all the prophets and messengers (including Adam, Moses, Abraham, Jesus and Muhammed - may peace be upon them all) bought the the same message (that there is only one God worthy of worship and none besided Him). This message is seen as a continuation from a long history of prophets and messengers from God who were sent to bring people to the right path, to do good deeds and to bring about peace and unity for the whole of mankind.

Muhammed Ali feigns being hurt to the delight of onlookers in a sparring session with Al Johnson at the Sheraton Motor Inn in Lanham, Md. April 16, 1976 during preparations for his upcoming heavyweight title defense at the Capital Centre with Jimmy Young.

Ali stayed at the Sheraton Motor Inn and did his road work in Greenbelt Park. His bout with Young was the first heavyweight title fight in the Washington, D.C. area since Joe Louis beat Buddy Baer in 1941.

Ali had his title stripped from him for three years (1967-70) and fought his way back to regain his heavyweight title and defend it through epic bouts with George Foreman, Ken Norton and Joe Frazier as well as lesser boxers.

Young was supposed to be a tune-up for a re-match with Norton later in the year.

However, Ali was not in prime shape and Young took him 15 rounds. Ali won a unanimous decision—attributed to his aggressiveness in the early rounds and in the 15th round.

Ali, already a powerful symbol of black pride, gained additional adulation of the black liberation and antiwar activists for his 1967 refusal to step forward at an Army induction center in opposition to the Vietnam War.

His refusal led to a lengthy court battle over his status with Ali, a member of the Nation of Islam, asserting that his religion forbade him from fighting in any wars except those blessed as holy wars.

Ali stated: "War is against the teachings of the Qur'an. I'm not trying to dodge the draft. We are not supposed to take part in no wars unless declared by Allah or The Messenger. We don't take part in Christian wars or wars of any unbelievers."

He further explained, "Man, I ain't got no quarrel with them Viet Cong." Ali elaborated: "Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go ten thousand miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights?"

His heavyweight title was stripped from him and all boxing associations barred him from fighting while he was out on bail until the U.S. Supreme Court vacated his conviction for violating draft laws in 1970.

After regaining his title and defending it successfully on a number of occasions, Leon Spinks beat Ali in 1978. In a re-match Ali beat Spinks, obtaining the heavyweight title for a record third time.

Ali retired from boxing following the second Spinks fight, but unsuccessfully attempted come-backs thereafter. He retired from boxing for good in 1981.

He had first gained international fame in the 1960 Olympics in Rome where he won a gold medal in the light heavyweight division.

He turned professional and surprised the boxing world when he defeated champion Sonny Liston when Liston didn’t answer the bell for the 7th round of their fight. He was undefeated until stripped of his title because of his stand on the draft.

In retirement, Ali would become a philanthropist and humanitarian, embracing a wide variety of causes.

He developed Parkinson’s disease that gradually forced him into less activity. He died of respiratory failure in 2016.

An interesting combination of characters found on a "tie wall' inside one of the tents in the Union Square market. I found the faces more interesting than the ties!

Can you identify them all without help?

Ok, here ya go, clockwise from the top: Ghandi, Muhammed Ali, Pablo Picasso, President-Elect Barack Obama, Castro and Julius Caesar.
