Poppies Café and Bistro, Ulverston. U.K. Featuring David Bowie, Prince, Muhammed Ali and Victoria Wood.
Well that was 2016. An eventful year in many ways. The worlds of culture and sports lost many grand figures. Muhammed Ali, Carlos Alberto, Johan Cruyff, Arnold Palmer, Sir George Martin, David Bowie, Prince, Alan Rickman, Gene Wilder, Frank Kelly (Father Jack) to name but a few. So many who passed away were icons, imbued with great talent who achieved so much and meant so much to so many.
None of those I have mentioned above achieved fame through a reality programme nor were they famous for being famous. So many achieved greatness and a place in our hearts due to talent and work. Many were innovators in their fields, not afraid to take risks or stand as the tallest poppy.
2016 was also the year of the underdog, large surprises and the year of the ordinary people. In the UK, Leicester City won the Premier League with a team made of players willing to work for each other led by a manager who did not seem to blame referees too much or be too concerned with making boastful public statements.
In Politics, in the USA, a businessman who in the 1980s had previously stated he would only ever run for the office of the President of the USA if he felt the country really needed help, stood for and won that high office. He won it despite all the polls by the mainstream media (incorrectly) predicting a close or even landslide victory for his opponent. He also won because he was not a mainstream career politician not in spite of that fact.
In the UK, the majority of the electorate voted to leave the EU despite predictions to the contrary. Incorrect predictions that were again made by... the mainstream media. To mess up so badly once is embarrassing but twice...
2017 there will elections throughout Europe and it will be interesting to see if more people in more countries opt for populist political movements and parties in the hope that it will bring change from the status quo. It will be interesting to see what the mainstream predicts and how those in the establishment will react to results, whichever way they might go.
I have some predictions though for 2017.
On the whole my guess is that it will not be a year that most people enjoy.
President Trump will not be as as bad as his opponents feared. People in the US will NOT be rounded up by government forces based on their sexuality, gender, etc. Maybe, identity politics will hold less sway in the USA and elsewhere.
President Trump will also not be as good/effective/severe as his adherents were hoping for.
In the UK, Brexit will delayed, possibly until the 2020 election while the UK still pays in in excessive of £300million per week. We might see a second referendum as those hoping to keep the UK in the EU enlist the help of more young people who have just turned 18 in the hope they would vote to remain in the EU. We may see a snap general election before any movement on Brexit. In that case I expect that the three main parties in the UK may find that they lose some parliamentary seats to smaller parties, with smaller parties becoming 'Kingmakers' in Westminster able effectively decide government policy.
The 'Snoopers charter' will survive any legal challenge, and freedom (of expression) will continue to be undermined.
Elsewhere, mainstream media viewing/listening/readership figures will continue to decline.
One thing that will not happen in 2017 is Leicester City retaining the premier league crown. But winning it once was rather amazing. In fact, maybe 2016 was just a dream. Maybe Elon Musk is right.
One thing is for sure, I wish you all a wonderful 2017, and may the rising tide float your household's boat, however majestic a craft it may be.

Today I met Muhammed and his younger Brother. Both are Somali and in Germany since a few days. Both looked very glad to be here and that joy translated without interruption - contrary to the hard exchange of words, if one doesn't understand each other.
We met before this big sign that says "Christmas Market Of Karlsruhe". As I took the photographs I found it somehow funny and a bit strange, but well, it kind of fits that we celebrate *love* these days, right?
I hope Muhammed and his brother will find a warm and safe place to stay and that they'll feel welcomed in this country.
Such an awesome guy he is from Bangladesh and he working here in Saudi Arabia almost 10 years ago ." Habeby lol"
